Pretty fair to say that Trump has fucked our image internationally. He’s turned the US into a pariah and making literally everyone hate us. I’m just wondering, how do we fix this?
Like in the future, what needs to be done so that we can be trusted again, at least somewhat? I feel like it’s possible, we certainly did it after Bush Jr., but this feels even more devastating.

My friend, we bomb and kill millions, we’ve always been a pariah and making literally everyone hate us.
We won’t be able to begin answering that until the damage stops happening. “The foundations are strong” – Korg
I’m not American. Some places to start:
impeach the president and then the VP and the secretary of state to ensure none of them can lead
vote out every Republic that has supported this and say idly by
vote out every elected judge that has been complicit
fire everyone at ICE that was just “following orders”
keep fighting the good fight, protesting and being vocal about dissent
donate and volunteer for orgs and candidates that can mitigate this or fight it
The Republican Party needs to shift away from the MAGA ideology permanently. That won’t happen until Trump is dead. And even then it still might not happen.
Structural reforms to the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government, and cleaning house at the state level.
Rebuilding large chunks of the structure of nonpartisan public service, to de-politicize it and greatly reduce the power of the President and the SCOTUS.
Also, reworking our electoral systems so that they guarantee legitimacy for whoever is serving, and providing a more definite and executable means to remove officials from power when they violate public expectations.
Lots of stuff. It’s not as simple as electing someone who isn’t Trump. We can’t rebuild trust without taking steps to structurally guarantee nobody like Trump can come back later, and to insulate everyone else from the consequences if someone like him were elected again. That means putting the power of the President in actual check. It means actually limiting it, such that people will actually—and are able to actually—refuse his illegal orders.
And, to be clear, “trust” doesn’t mean we will be well-liked. Nobody likes the security guarantor very much, because you will inevitably be roped into hurting people. We decided to take on the role of being the guarantor of the entire global system, which means we were on the hook to do violence against… potentially anyone.
It was always going to earn us enemies.
But that isn’t the same as being untrustworthy. Being predictable and holding to our agreements made us trustworthy, even if that was trust we would do something people didn’t like very much.
A progressive president, scotus and super majority in legislature would go a long way.
>I feel like it’s possible, we certainly did it after Bush Jr., but this feels even more devastating.
Bush Jr. didn’t attack our allies, didn’t start trade wars with our biggest trading partners, etc…. Bush Jr. didn’t give our allies a reason to not trust us.
Bush Jr. fell for some false or misleading intel that fit his preconceived biases and attacked a country that already had poor standing on the global stage. For Bush Jr. actions a review and improvement of our intelligence organizations was all that was needed to fix any doubt.
This is bigger, this isn’t some random government employees failing and politicians acting on that failure, this is a president doing what they campaigned on and won the election on, Trump isn’t the reputational failing, it’s the 32% of Americans 49.9% of those who bother to vote that voted for him.
Let’s see where our reputation ends up. It’s not like trump is going anywhere any time soon.
For this to happen quickly would require something that puts us into fantasy territory
Imagine the 2026 midterms resulting in half of the Republican senators or more up for reelection losing to a Democrat. Then that happens again in 2028 and we end up with enough senators that we could impeach and convict on our own.
A large number of judges who have shown they have no business being on the bench are removed. The court is rebuilt, but while doing this mass removal of judges Democrats managed to find a way to put some fairly centrist old school center right people on the bench as well so that it’s not absolute partisan nonsense.
Meanwhile, the newly elected Democratic president makes stripping the president and the executive branch of many of the powers it has accumulated over the years, their number one priority among all the other number one priorities in the first 100 days.
The new justice department goes after the obvious corruption and lawbreaking that has occurred and actual wealthy and powerful people pay a price for what they’ve done.
Congress passes legislation to ensure voting rights including ending gerrymandering and rework how we had many things in society so that they are laws and not norms.
On top of a proper pick for state and defense, the new president brings in two retired senior officials with credibility for each organization and has them tour the world and try to rebuild our relationships.
And here’s the part that’s the dealbreaker on a list of fantasy items that won’t happen; the American people need to not have the memory of a goldfish and simply not put Republicans in power for good 16 to 20 years.

Because that’s the real issue. You can’t have a relationship with the United States if you are convinced that every four years they will elect somebody like Donald Trump.
When all the people who are alive during this time are dead.
Impeachment. Removal. Imprisonment for the administration of all the crimes they’ve already committed.
Show the world that this was our lowest point that we want to prevent from happening again.
This of course will not happen as what happened is the new normal and half the country is happy with the open corruption. Nothing happening after January 6th already eroded international confidence in us.
Maybe our great grandkids generation might be able to restore our reputation
Not intervening in any country unless it’s explicitly for the defense of them a.k.a defending UKRAINE vs “let’s bomb Iraq for a little treat”.
And equally critically, some kind of sign that we’re not just going to vote in a complete fucking sociopath every four years because of the vibes. Even the countries that tolerated us feel like they can’t trust us.
We need to vote out Trump
We need a cultural purge of Republican ideology. It simply does not have value.
We need to work closely with our allies and value our trade agreements and commit to them no matter the President.
We do that and we can come close to what was the norm in our lifetimes.
Things will never be the same post-Trump and people need to accept that. The world is watching just how unreliable this country is.
At a minimum you’d need a congress that was visibly and vocally attempting to rein Trump in. No evidence of that right now.
Trust is gained in drops and lost in buckets.
We have to behave ourselves for decades if we ever hope to regain what we had.
But the world now knows what we already know: republicans are vile, stupid, religious extremist, domestic terrorist, morally vile absolute trash. They are the worst people in the world.
So long as the gop is a political party, no country will ever trust us again. And certainly, we won’t regain what we lost.
The damage is done, it takes a lifetime to build trust and it can be irreparably destroyed in minutes. So nobody will ever look at the U.S. the same again.
We need to basically destroy the Republican party as an institution for a couple generations until they get their shit together.
Past that we need to probably not just go back to the pre-Trump status quo of consistency in our actions, but do a better job of actually living up to the ideals we profess. No more treating the international order like they’re rules for everyone else but not us.
Admit that we have a problem.
Act, publicly, to fix that problem.
Present a plan to ensure that the problem we have doesn’t just come back.
Stick to that plan.
Apologize, mean it, and treat our friends better in the future.
Trump needs to be removed and imprisoned
America needs to refrain from electing a similarly awful figure for at least a generation
America needs to undergo serious domestic reform to create a more democratic political system and address internal inequality
America needs to refrain from flexing military muscle abroad again unless it’s explicit in self-defense of themselves or an ally.
American culture needs to reorient itself to be less selfish and narcissistic
This is obviously asking a lot, but the US had serious reputational issues before Trump and Trump simply managed to set fire to the things that were reasons why those existing issues were overlooked. Now that’s he’s done so, it will take extraordinary “Best behavior” by the US to regain its’ reputation to such a degree that it is in the realm of fantasy to think we would do so.
Not too hard, just elect a Democrat president. Obama mostly redeemed the bad image Bush left behind.
If he really wanted to fix it, he would stand trial for his crimes and show the world we still have rule of law.
Anything less is just more harm.
Long story short, because of Charlie Kirk, because of the muddy media that undermined our grand juries, our jury trials, and the denial of due process for (non? Proven where?) citizens, no country will be able to count on the dead husk of USA as a solid place to park money and invest.
We are more fucked by a criminal running this shit show than an unqualified reality tv show host running the show.
So there will be no return without his sacrifice to face accusers in court (which he is too chicken to do).
Biden warned us that character matters.
And the GOP responded. 🤮
Not going to happen. Trump highlights and exploits the numerous weaknesses in our now-obsolete constitution, but he didn’t cause them. There will be more Trumps, and probably worse ones.
Too late. The best case scenario is that the world can trust us for increments of 4 years. That’s not worth much.
We would have to boot tRump out of office immediately, and thats not likely not happen. If we don’t, all is lost.
