I asked my sister to do house checks while we were out on vacation. The night we were back (and unpacking) I found a handmade card from my nephew (who is <10 YO) welcoming me back from my vacation and it was just so thoughtful, it made me super emotional.

My boyfriend and I were discussing rings, 10+ years ago when we were first together.. well during the conversation he said “I’d get you a black diamond”. Like thats my aesthetic, and it was so sweet it made me super emotional.

During the height of the pandemic, I was still working full-time (VetMed, so we were considered “essential workers”), but my partner wasn’t. We were struggling to make ends meet and feed ourselves, but we didn’t tell anyone, because we didnt want anyone to worry, and everyone was having a pretty rough time anyway, so why would we add our trouble to theirs?

Anyway, in our apartment complex, there’s this older Latina lady who was organizing food boxes for our school district- veggies, canned food, dried beans and pasta, that kind of thing. Boxes of food that parents who need help feeding their kids who are all of a sudden home ALL THE TIME would need. She took one look at me and my partner and went “oh, these poor babies” and from then on, she always made sure to set aside a box or two for us. Made sure we had fresh fruit and vegetables. Gave us FLATS of canned veggies and BOXES of pasta and mac and cheese.

She kept us fed for two years, and she still won’t let me thank her.

When I lived in an apartment, I walked down the front stoop one morning to get to my car to go to work. I was feeling especially cute, in a dress I’d just got and loved. As I stepped outside, I made eye contact with one of my downstairs neighbors who was sitting inside her car. She was a lovely older lady and we’d chatted a bit in passing (mainly laughing about the way we huffed and puffed going up/down the stairs), and all she did was beam at me through her windshield and nod.

I was floating on air the whole day, basically.

(No, I don’t care that she could have been talking to someone on a bluetooth headset or something. That morning I decided she got a look at my cute cute dress and approved.)

Once I was waiting at the bus station for the bus and this very old man came to me. He gave me a 2 cent coin and told me, may this coin bring you good luck ( I guess in Germany it is a way of wishing someone good luck or giving blessings). There were also other people on the road, but he came to me. I am a foreigner in this country. So I was feeling very appreciated as a human being ( back then I was very insecure about my skin color) and emotional. I still remember that day.

When I first moved into my house I was having such a rough day, I actually took the day off work because I was doing so badly mentally. I decided to pull up weeds in the front garden and I was feeling so fragile. My neighbour, an older man, struck up a conversation and we talked about gardening and things. He ended up showing me how to take care of the garden & lending me his hedge trimmer and other garden equipment and showing me how to use it. He was so patient and kind and it’s just what I needed that day. He has no idea how much it meant to me.

In my apartment complex, where I was parked, I was getting ready to drive away when I noticed I had a flat tire. I got out all my tools and began to attempt on putting my spare on. I’m a petite woman but with a strong will. I jacked up my car, took out my wrench and was having a really hard time loosening the bolts, literally jumping up & down on the thing, and it was super hot that day. Out of nowhere, this big landscaper man who seemed to only speak Spanish came over and just loosened all the bolts fricken effortlessly. I just stood there, sweaty, with such little Spanish in my vocabulary, just trying to thank him. He walked away afterwards. Seriously, what a man. It made me feel really safe & looked after. I wish I could’ve thanked him more.
