What should a 31 year old be focusing on in his life?

r/

Hello,

As the title says, just wondering what a 31 year old guy should be focusing on at this point in his life? I have a few things in mind, but wanted to hear the opinions of others. Thanks

Any advice that would matter is highly dependent on the person in question and their circumstances. Sometimes its money and sometimes its throwing money to the wind and chasing something new for the first time…..sometimes men have a kid to take care of.

There’s way too many variables here for a question this generic. Depending on your circumstances, your career, your spouse/significant other, your baby, your family, your education, your health, your mental health, your finances, your house, your car, your friends…the list goes on. Focus on what’s important to you in this stage of life that’s unique to you. Some 31 year olds have 2 kids and a house. Some have an apartment. Some live at home. All with different circumstances and different paths to get there.

If you want to keep the flames going, attraction grows in space, not in company. For most women, a man on a mission is the most attractive thing. Even when they say they just want you home.

If you’re single, know that men peak in the sexual marketplace at around 36. Enjoy the ride if you want.

I am 35 and I am focusing constant growth. Learning about things I thought were stupid in my 20s.

Something I worked on in my late 20s and early 30s was coming to terms with who I was and the choices I’d made in the past. It was very easy, in my 30s, to look at many of my friends who were making a ton of money or had pursued a straightforward path in medicine or law, and feel jealous that they were “further ahead” than I was.

It took me time honestly look at everything that had happened in the previous decade and reassure myself of the choices I’d made and pivot where I needed to to settle myself down into who I wanted to be. As soon as I did that, I both unleashed myself to follow through on what I wanted my life to look like and stopped envying people who made different choices than I had.

We all make mistakes or take risks when we’re young. Those things don’t define us, they teach us. Learn from your past and prevent it from messing with your present and future.

I’m 32, worked in the army, went to college, joined corporate IT about 9 years ago, bought a house, new car and had a kid.

Kid was the most joy I found because I realized something.

We measure our success or happiness based on economic gain. Once I understood that and actively tried to heal my trauma and found healthier habits, my joy skyrocketed not due to a change of metric but an actual sense of satisfaction.

You should’ve finished with school by now, and should’ve started a career. Unless mommy and daddy have a trust fund for you, you should either find employment or a sugga-momma. I guess they’re called, “cougars” these days.

Your health, both physical and mental. Then your career and your community. If you can’t devote time to others or causes within your immediate community you can’t become the selfless, honorable, and righteous type of man that will allow you to be fulfilled. The relationships you maintain while you focus on these things will be the strongest. Those that want other superficial things won’t want to be around someone that makes them feel inadequate. They’ll end up distancing themselves. Think of it as trash taking itself out.

    1. Learn to cook / eat right. Get some staple recipes. Learn one or two ‘impressive’ dishes for company. Eat more fruit and vegetables. Minimize red meat. Eliminate sugar and high fructose corn syrup as much as possible. Stop eating fast food and eat out only for special events.

    2. Exercise or take up sports. Find something that gives back more than it takes and is not going to damage your body. Break a sweat at least once a week, preferably three times. Have performance goals.

    3. Practice good health and hygiene. Not some pretty manscaping, just the basic stuff. Brush, floss, mouthwash, shower, shave, haircut. Get a yearly physical, eyecheck, and twice dentist.

    4. Clean your room. Get your bedroom, kitchen, etc in order. Your clothes go in the hamper, washer, or drawer, not on the floor.

    5. Practice good mental health. Go to therapy. Practice mindfulness. Start a journal. Sit outside and watch the birds.

    6. Talk to your parents. Talk to your friends. Tell someone you love them at least once a day.

    7. Find a hobby and a third space that gives you meaning.

    8. Get your finances in order. Save something. Invest something. Even if it is $10 a month. Budget and understand how your lifestyle is reflected in your spending.

    9. Get to bed. Sleep 8 hours a day. Wake up with the sun. You can stay up late and sleep late on the weekends if you want to.

    10. Probably the most important: establish a routine. No one accomplishes big changes all at once. Big change is the result of many little changes. It takes roughly 30 days for a behavior to be established. It might be a fight the whole time, but stick to it. Pick the things you want to change and tackle them one at a time. Within a year you can become a new person. A year seems like a long time, but in the course of your life it is not.

Developing skills and focusing on health. For health it can be anything but do something. You don’t have to be a gym rat. Also save and invest your money if/when possible.

What do you want out of life? A high powered career? Free time to travel? A family? A lower golf handicap? ect.

Personally, at 31, I was focused on my career and making money. Some people don’t have that same goal, they want to clock in, clock out and go home and hang with their kids and wife or save up enough for their next vacation. Once you can answer that question, find the puzzle pieces that make that happen and start putting them together.

Focus on what relationships, behaviors, habits, career and hobbies that create satisfaction instead of happiness.

Read/listen to “from strength to strength” by Arthur brooks to learn more about this.

Also read/listen to “the sweet spot” by Paul Bloom.

This specific area of thinking is highly guiding and is a linchpin across all aspects of what you do next, and makes a huge difference in what you experience next.

As doctors, lawyers, and IT will say, “That depends.”

Everyone is different, and life is a journey, not a checklist. Marriage and kids is out of your control. Promotions are out of your control. The only thing you can focus on is you and the direction you want to go.

The bot was pushing for flair. It wasn’t a problem before, but now it is for some reason. I’ll make this post again.

The focus should be on you as a person. Health, hygiene, mental health, and money. I went through a rough breakup when she cheated after 10 years. I had a period of about a year where I lost complete control. Partying like I was 20 (sad), lots of strange, alcohol, brawls, and many things no one should do. It was bizarre how shit I looked after a year. Sunken eyes, gaunt, bad hair feeling like absolute shit every day.

But now I hit the gym (cliché, I know) a minimum of 3 times a week and max 6. And I eat healthy. But now I notice how much more effort it takes to stop my body from going to shit compared to my 20s. It would have been easier if I hadn’t wrecked it before trying to fix it. I still drink because that is what I like to do on Saturday , during the week I drink water with ginger and the occasional lime (fucks your teeth if you drink lime all the time). I believe you shouldn’t go a full 180 and cut everything out that you enjoy. But it isn’t a bottle of whisky a day (and somehow still functional).

Money sounds like a douche thing to focus on. Money, sure, as shit doesn’t buy happiness, but it helps a ton. Start saving for retirement because with the way things are going, it is very unlikely anyone is able to retire unless they have their own fund. Money also helps with health and hygiene. Eating at McDonald’s would be cheaper for me but not healthy. I never thought the girl I knew would cheat. But having money loaded prevented me from being homeless and allowed me to move on and cut all ties to her immediately. Money is a great way to relieve stress, and most importantly, having money helps your mental health a great deal.

30 was my goal to be setup with a house and making more than $30/hour. Was smoking weed with alot of 30 year old losers still making shit money and partying. I went to college and partied and got a diploma and a job that allowed me to buy a house and work industrial field jobs and get paid for driving around the forest fixing things.

    Mind, body, and soul.

Are you educated enough or do you need more? Are you depressed? Get out of your mind. Don’t think. Just do.

Go to the gym. Men need it to maximize their potential. It’s a huge confidence booster and is good for all around physical health.

Find a church ASAP. Don’t think this isn’t necessary. It’s the most important thing you can do. Following Jesus and reading the Bible has made many men great for 2,000 years. On a side note it’s great for making new friends and meeting women.
