Those Simpsons type desks with 2 students went extinct long ago!
The standard US school classroom these days has individual seating. Most commonly, chairs with folding wooden planks to write on. Or just an individual table and chair.
I had so many different types of desks in school throughout the years.
Like in elementary school we had the ones where the top opened up and we’d keep our books in there. https://www.worthingtondirect.com/751m-lift-lid-desk-w-solid-plastic-top
But one year was the type of desk where it doesn’t open up but there’s a space right underneath to shove your books. Chairs were still separate. https://www.amazon.com/Flash-Furniture-Student-Front-Metal/dp/B005XVYV2Y
I can’t remember what year we were all excited because it was announced we’d be getting cool new desks. These were longer with more table space and the storage for books was off to the right hand side underneath. Like a cubby hole. https://www.wayfair.com/school-furniture-and-supplies/pdp/virco-765mbb-765-series-jr-executive-student-desk-with-side-metal-double-layer-storage-modesty-panel-and-laminate-top-vr10042.html
Towards high school you got the ones where it’s just a slab, a connected seat, and a tiny little basket under the seat. There was no reason for book storage since everyone moved classrooms throughout the day. https://www.amazon.com/Virco-3700BRM-Classroom-Attached-Students/dp/B0BXZPH68D/ref=asc_df_B0BXZPH68D?mcid=6adba8faabfb394ebfd1313b0cddecd7&hvocijid=11818236870314421470-B0BXZPH68D-&hvexpln=73&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=721245378154&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11818236870314421470&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002149&hvtargid=pla-2281435177898&psc=1
Art class and science classrooms had more like a counter type seating. https://www.cameron.edu/storage/20210824_144435.jpg
Depends on the school, district, or state.
I had a wide variety all through my school years. Round ones, square ones, rectangle ones. Individual ones, group ones. With storage, without. Chairs with attached “desk”. Desk with separate chair. Attached to the floor, not screwed down. Plastic, wood, metal. All colors. Tall, short, medium.
You name it, it exists as a school chair/desk/table.
So American shows, made by Americans, for an American audience are, for some reason, decided to show desks that aren’t actually used in American schools.
This is your logic? 😑
It depends and can even change within schools.
The Catholic elementary schools I went to either had a desk whose top opened up or they had an opening in front of where you sit to put books.
My public elementary school used tables.
My high-school had these desks that the chairs and writing top were connected via the right arm. They had a little shelf on the bottom to put books. I tended to be careful doing that because inconsiderate jackasses behind you would put their feet on the shelf and get their nasty shoes all over your stuff.
