My roommates in Uni were great gals. They studied hard and they partied hard. Despite being in different sub-specialities than me, they always made me feel accepted. Both of them worked really hard with a lot of consistency in their daily routine which actually inspired me with my own academics/career. They would wake up early, exercise, eat healthy(as much as was possible), prioritise self love and care which is not something that you will find most residents do. Even in relationships & friendships they would put themselves first, all of which was a big eye-opener for me when it came to my own life.

I was roommates with a huge party girl out of convivence. She would have people over nightly until the early morning hours. My bedroom was upstairs and the noise stayed downstairs so with my box fan and ear plugs it surprisingly did not effect my sleep. As a thank you for letting her party she made me dinner almost every night and she was an AMAZING cook! We also adopted a kitten together, went shopping together, and hung out most weekends. I was super shy and had almost no friends so it felt really great having a social life. She also took me home for Thanksgiving and Christmas because she knew my family did not celebrate holidays. When our lease was up I moved to another state and she got a new roommate. I still miss her terribly but we fell out of touch pretty soon after I left.

I lived with a girl for a year in my old flat, then she moved country. A close friend moved in with me, a year later we decided to move to a new home but it’s a 3 bed, and I knew the first girl was moving back so I asked if she’d want to join. We moved to this lovely place right at the start of COVID so spent a lot of time together. We shared the common room as our work area, going for midday walks and coffees, doing home exercises and then going to the gym (when things started to open again), cooking, watching shows together. We also adopted a cat as a house. We became the best of friends, we had our inside jokes and home rituals, it was so much fun and I loved spending time with them, raising our little cat was great too, he was very much doted on. We joked that he had three mothers, and he’s a very spoiled child.

Eventually one moved out to be with her boyfriend, someone we didn’t know replaced her and it wasn’t the same. I moved out a year after to be with my partner and we gave up the flat. The end of an era for sure. We’re still great friends, the cat lives with the first girl and her boyfriend, still very much loved.

Moving out. I’ve only lived with a friend once – never again. Nothing crazy happened or anything but let’s just say I learned my lesson.

We were strangers, met on the internet. Living together since October last year. She cleaned the apartment for me a couple weeks ago when I told her my family is coming over. I have some health issues that causes chronic back/neck pain and weakness in arms and other things. And it was just so unexpected and I appreciated that SO much!!

We decided to take a weekend road trip on a whim. We didn’t plan anything, just packed a bag, got in the car, and drove to a random place. We ended up finding this quiet little town, explored it, and had a blast. It was spontaneous and felt like an adventure, and we ended up making some really great memories from it.

I moved in with a roommate from the internet I had never met in person because Covid lockdowns started the day we were going to meet.

She was fantastic, we were both young engineers and found an incredible deal on rent. It was so much fun having a friend during the pandemic and she also introduced me to like all of the young Michiganders in the area which is how I got a friend group in a new state. Idk why, but everyone from Detroit is the nicest person ever.

We were both theatre majors and total night owls. One time at 2 AM we spontaneously acted out the entire first act of Wicked in our tiny apartment kitchen using wooden spoons as microphones.

    College.

    • Me: Business major
    • Roommate that became my bestie: Geology major
    • Gay roommate: Art major

Geology bestie made the most AMAZING stroganoff dishes. Gay art student was an absolute sucker for hot chocolate. Like, he had whole variations of how to make it from scratch. My contribution was a financially well-off father who believed in me earning my own way, but every month, he’d send me a few hundred $ for groceries. I’d schlep to the grocery store and fill up a whole cart of good food. We were based in the Midwest, and winters were COLD, yet we were effectively broke. We’d put blankets up like curtains and some blankets up against the bottom of doorways, geology bestie would cook up an amazing stroganoff every Friday night, and the three of us would curl up with our stroganoff, while sipping on hot chocolate, all three of us curled up under a massive blanket watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

That was a decade ago. We now all live in separate states. Geology major bestie is getting married later this year, and we plan to re-create a night of our college days as part of her Bachelorette festivities.
