Robin Williams, he seemed like such a happy guy, life was good, but then he goes and commits suicide. It was a shock! Princess Diana died in a car crash, Steve Irwin was killed in an accident with his beloved wildlife, but Robin Williams purposely killed himself. That was a difficult thing to understand, at least until we learned of his health issues.
Chadwick Boseman. There have been celebrity deaths that come by surprise(suicides, OD, accidents) but when the news broke, nobody outside of his circle knew what he had been going through while still playing a hero.
Gained so much more respect and it truly was a shock given his age and the height of his career at the time.
Bob Saget. He just fell, hit his head and thought he’d be fine after a nap. I think it being a freak accident and that he died so suddenly also added to the shock factor. Very sad.
Diana, Michael, Robin, and Carrie Fisher and her mother, with the latter largely a surprise because it was so immediately after Carrie—died of a broken heart after losing her child.
Robin Williams for sure, was battling depression myself at the time and it really stung knowing that even those who portray themselves as incredibly happy and joyful can be struggling so deeply. Really encouraged me to actively seek help and talk about my problems in a healthy way.
I don’t really know what could be more fucked up than Vic Morrow, and two children, I believe, dying on the set of The Twilight Zone. That was a truly pointless death.
Michelle Trachtenberg. She hadn’t been on my radar for years, but because of her age and relative lack of drama, it came out of nowhere and made me so sad.
For me it was Chester Bennington. Linkin Park was the band I listed to all of highschool. Both my brother and sister called me to ask if I was okay and how I was taking it.
It was hard for me to accept when Emily Armstrong joined, as to me it felt like without Chester it was no longer Linkin Park. I’ve come to enjoy their new music and think that she is doing a good job, although I havnt really listened to her sing any of their old songs.
River Phoenix – but I think I was too young/naive to know what addiction looked like. Very close second was Princess Diana. That was a globally recognized tragedy.
Jeff Buckley. He was a transcendent talent. I connected with him so much, personally. He died so young and so unexpectedly. So in terms of shock value, this is the top for me.
Honestly, Princess Diana easily the biggest even not most notable to me personally. But it is hard to state how big Elvis and Lennon were at their deaths. Curt Cobain for a younger age group. Though I am in the Robin Williams for me camp.

Probably the murder of Jill Dando, a well known TV presenter who ironically used to present Crime Watch.

Brittany Murphy for me, I liked her 🙁
River Phoenix – but I think I was too young/naive to know what addiction looked like. Very close second was Princess Diana. That was a globally recognized tragedy.
There are a fair few. But for me, it was Amy Winehouse—had it all ahead of her, died at 27. So young, so talented.
Amy Winehouse and Robin Williams
Phillip Seymour Hoffman has to be up there.
No one expected he’d die of a heroin overdose. When he died he had 5 empty bags of heroin and 65 unused bags of heroin in his possession.
Chris Cornell for me. Seemed like he had finally beat his demons, but I guess we never really do.
Grant Imahara. It wasn’t big news, or it was under the radar for me. I was so sad when I heard.
Jeff Buckley. He was a transcendent talent. I connected with him so much, personally. He died so young and so unexpectedly. So in terms of shock value, this is the top for me.
The one that figuratively (to be honest it was almost literally, but I was at work and had a team to manage) dropped me to my knees was Prince.
Robin Williams also nearly broke me. I was at home when that bomb dropped.
Princess Diana. It was a global event.
