what was the point of katy perry going into space anyway

r/

i know it’s supposed to be like a “feminist” “first all female crew in space” thing and all but i mean did they even do anything of note or of any importance, like, scientifically i guess or were they just there for a few minutes and went back down just for the photo op and to say they did it?

i mean surely it would be more significant and historical from a feminist point of view if they actually did anything up there? like it doesn’t seem like it holds any importance whatsoever other than virtue signaling lol…i’ve seen articles calling it “historic” but i don’t think anything warrants it being called historic at all

like don’t get me wrong i’m not trying to criticize womens’ accomplishments but it just doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment to me to be allowed to fart around in space for 10 minutes by a billionaire currently trying to ruin the world

I just hope she doesn’t blow up in the sky like a firework.

  2. NDaveT Avatar

It’s a publicity thing for Bezos and Blue Origin.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who have a scientific interest in seeing video of Katy Perry in freefall but that’s not why they did it.

  3. Melenduwir Avatar

She’s a celebrity. They were trying to get attention from people who might otherwise not pay attention to a space mission. That’s all.

  4. sexrockandroll Avatar

It’s a stunt/publicity thing for Blue Origin and for her.

I think it’s also possible she just wanted to. Like, as a person. She was asked if she would go to space and it was offered to her to buy a ticket, and she wanted to experience that. Outside of whatever publicity and so on, she’s rich and maybe she thought it would be interesting to do.

Some other actors like Tom Hanks have talked about being offered to go on Blue Origin, but didn’t want to pay the cost. In Hanks’ case it’s clearly due to his role on Apollo 13. He also said they wanted money for the trip. Perry has used space related imagery before in her work, so maybe it’s why she was offered the chance to go.

  5. mandela__affected Avatar

What’s the point of anyone doing anything of leisure/adventure?

  6. Martino231 Avatar

Right now Blue Origin is primarily a space tourism company. The trip they did today – as well as all the other celebrities they’ve taken into space recently – are for the purposes of tourism, and promoting their tourism offerings. They serve no scientific purpose.

  7. nevermindaboutthaton Avatar

    PR.
    Nothing but that.

  8. azuth89 Avatar

I mean…if I had the money I would. Blue Origin is space tourism and at the end if the day that was the point.

  9. bangbangracer Avatar

Looking at it and what Blue Origin has been primarily been doing, I don’t really think there is a point. Blue Origin was likely given a sum of money to take some people up, and Katy Perry just happens to be part of that payload.

  10. p0tat0p0tat0 Avatar

It’s not feminist, it’s advertising for Bezos.

  11. JellicoAlpha_3_1 Avatar

    She’s rich

It’s space tourism and rich people want to do it

This is not a hard concept to understand

  12. HolyFlyingPizza Avatar

Theres this thing called capitalism where corporations want money so they offer services, and other people give them money for said services. Katy Perry paid for a seat on the rocket, so they flew her to space.

  13. Novae224 Avatar

    Theres literally no point

Its just Jeff Bezos trying to safe face… and Katy Perry let him use her for a publicity trick

  14. ExtraSalty0 Avatar

I held my breath thinking it was gonna be like the submarine last summer five rich people going into the ocean that don’t come back.

  15. Future_Usual_8698 Avatar

    Not feminist- they aren’t brainiacs

  16. prodigy1367 Avatar

It can get both very hot and very cold up in space so they needed an expert in that field.

  17. mayhem1906 Avatar

It’s a private company. They aren’t doing things for the betterment of mankind. Nor do they need to if it’s private money.

  18. Ok_Prize9676 Avatar

They wanted to study how boobs work in anti-grav, I reckon!

  19. RealDonutBurger Avatar

Publicity is the only feasible answer. I doubt any real feminists cared about this.

  20. surloc_dalnor Avatar

It’s as pointless as when the guys do it. The point was press for Blue Origin and Perry.

  21. Enough-Parking164 Avatar

“In Space, no one can hear how badly you sing!”.

  22. kanemano Avatar

They can’t sell the seats so they are giving it away as advertisement

  23. Crypt_Sermon_80 Avatar

    because she fuckin can??

  24. Building_Everything Avatar

It’s historic in the same way that a movie poster called the Emoji movie historic; for the purposes of marketing sure but in reality? Nah.

  25. nixiedust Avatar

No point aside from promoting a thing for rich people. Billionaires and the US government have made it clear that space is not for the poors or the people.

Billionaires are beyond gender. They are all just wealth-hoarding garbage nets. You childhood space dreams have been devoured by the same dragons that eat everything else.

  26. MerryLandofOz Avatar

The word “crew” seems inappropriate. So the next time I fly, I plan to ask for ask for a crew discount.

  27. neamhagusifreann Avatar

Just rich people doing rich people shit.

  28. WishmeluckOG Avatar

She went to space? Good for her.

  29. PSXer Avatar

The flight was suborbital. They went up, and then gravity took them back down. The craft didn’t have anywhere near enough fuel to circularize the orbit and stay for any length of time.

  30. No-Cantaloupe-6535 Avatar

Cuz she’s rich. Ya telling me if you had the cash you wouldn’t go to space?

  31. Equivalent_Range6291 Avatar

    First female astronaut/s?

The Russians did that in the 60`s!

That Was historic, todays launch was ..

erm? just a rocket launch, theres been thousands.

  32. SLUnatic85 Avatar

is this your first time seeing a celebrity used as a prop or stunt for some ulterior purpose or cause?

Also, it’s not hard for anything to do with public space travel to be “historic” since it’s still a brand new thing. Historic is an over-used word if you ask me and doesn’t even mean “good” much less more than that.

People can say what they want about any event in the form of quotes or news stories or however… I wouldn’t cling to them too much.

  33. DnJohn1453 Avatar

So they could stay relevant in the media.

  34. userhwon Avatar

Same as the point of sending any human into space any more.

    1000% optics.

  35. [deleted] Avatar

Can we just leave her out there?

  36. Plane_Pea5434 Avatar

There’s no point, it’s just cool to go to space and they have the money to do it

  37. Pndrizzy Avatar

They wanted to see what them thangs did in zero gravtitty, for science

  38. punarob Avatar

All these women propping up Bezos is the antithesis of feminism. Instead they all should have cancelled, called out Bezos as the criminal traitor he is, and urged a boycott of Amazon and all Bezos companies. Instead they said fuck everyone else, we want to go on his penis rocket.

  39. CompetitiveSport1 Avatar

The “point” is probably just that she wanted to if I had to guess

  40. JK_NC Avatar

Seems to me, the whole point was publicity. To get people talking about it. You fell right into the trap!

  41. i-sleep-well Avatar

And this released how many hundreds of tons of CO2 and other noxious chemicals into the atmosphere? And for what purpose? A shiny, new thing for rich people to destroy the Earth with. Yay!

  42. JunkMale975 Avatar

She’s become irrelevant and now her name has been in the news all day. Celebrity win.

  43. uresmane Avatar

So she could jump of the steps like a child, then dramatically kiss the ground for attention

  44. WheelNaive Avatar

Because she rides Harleys in Hawaii.

  45. PositiveAtmosphere13 Avatar

The whole thing was a publicity stunt. The flight was automated and controlled on the ground. Anybody could have done it. They could have sent a dog into space and achieved the same result. They went for a fun ride. There was nothing special or historic about it.

  46. Savings-Ad7257 Avatar

Maybe she just wanted to give E.T. more street cred

  47. spasticjedi Avatar

So I don’t disagree that this is all a silly stunt and is absolutely meaningless in terms of science. But to give the statements a little bit of credit… It’s just barely been 50 years since laws changed to allow women to have their own bank accounts in the US, and it was another almost decade before Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. The fact that women could be independently wealthy enough to buy a trip to space is… an indicator of growth, at least.

  48. JenkinsHowell Avatar

jeff bezos probably gave her a lot of money to advertise space-tourism. at the same time she was hoping to make some headlines, since she isn’t doing too well currently (afaik).

  49. kevloid Avatar

there a line in a movie where someone says they shouldn’t send a scientist to space, they should send a poet

  50. Baykusu Avatar

I had no idea this happened, I thought at first you were complaining about the video she was with Kanye lmao.

  51. DogOutrageous Avatar

  52. yaybunz Avatar

    she a firework

  53. Sufficient_Pin5642 Avatar

Listen, I’m a woman and I could give a shit who the crew is but if I had a chance to go to space I’d go. There’s nothing in this world I’d want more than to do that. I’ll never have enough money to do it but if I could, that would be something I’ve already probably done multiple times. The real question is, if you have that kind of money, what’s the point of not going to space?

  54. Public-Eagle6992 Avatar

The point was her wanting to go to space

  55. Sevvie82 Avatar

So this is how I find out that Katy Perry’s in space right now.

    Huh.

  56. Fancy_Albatross_5749 Avatar

I’m pretty sure nobody cared at all and no real person is claiming it as a win for anything except publicity.

  57. ProfessorGinyu Avatar

  58. DeaconSage Avatar

It’s just a celebrity doing something, and that’s the point.

  60. whitephos420 Avatar

More publicity for her E.T. song hehe, also Kanye’s influence.

  62. rygelicus Avatar

It’s like when that submarine guy was inviting celebs to visit the titanic. It’s marketing. Fortunately that rocket ride is safer than the sub ride.

  63. Any_Manufacturer7336 Avatar

    Not crew, passengers.

  64. Constant_Crazy_506 Avatar

This isn’t “feminist.” She’s no astronaut. The whole flight is automated. She was cargo.

  65. G0_ofy Avatar

If you had fuck all money, and if you were offered a ticket to go to space, would you say no?

  66. Impressive-Brush-837 Avatar

  69. txtoolfan Avatar

I’d guess none of them paid for it themselves and this is a publicity stunt by Bezos.

it isn’t historic. none of the passengers did anything but sit there.

  70. hhfugrr3 Avatar

It’s just an advert for Blue Origin and a way for Bezos to pretend he gives a shit about feminism by pretending to have put the first all woman crew into space. Nevermind that the thing is autonomous/remote controlled from the ground when necessary and that the woman did literally nothing but look out the window and take photos of each other. It’s like me claiming I flew to China as part of the crew because I once paid to be a passenger on a plane there.

  71. natedogjulian Avatar

Money. The point is only money.

  72. Kawaiithulhu Avatar

Kary going into space means that we can talk about Katy going into space.
Before now was the no Katy in space drought 😪
    How soon we forget.

  73. UslashMKIV Avatar

Personally, I would like to take away from the historical importance of this being the first all female space flight. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space in 1963 and there weren’t any men on her mission, so Vostok 6 was the first all female space flight 60 years ago, this is just a tourism flight that happens to be all female, nothing particularly notable about it

  74. Cliffy73 Avatar

It was a tourism and publicity flight. If Bezos asked me, I’d go too.

  75. AdeptAvocado2321 Avatar

The irony of a gaggle of women going to space in a penis shaped rocket will stay in my memory forever. They rode that rocket like a champ and screamed weeeee weeeee weeeee all the way home.

  87. TootsNYC Avatar

It might have been a good exercise of going into space, and it didn’t matter who was actually inside. So they chose famous people for the publicity value, but the real purpose of the flight was simply to practice the technology.

  88. ersentenza Avatar

Making rich idiots pay for space technology development seems a good deal to me
