i once worked as a server at a high-end restaurant and one day, we had this VIP client, a famous actor, come in. he was a real pain, demanding special treatments and being rude to the staff. at one point, he even threw a tantrum over the wine selection… and guess who had to deal with it? yours truly. it was like, dude, i’m just here to pay my bills, not babysit a celebrity having a fit. definitely a “i don’t get paid enough for this crap” moment.

either clogged sink full of puke or massive pile of feces that missed the bowl completely. It was like a can of chili.

One I had to scoop with gloved hands, and one I had to push down a floor drain with a mop. Basically waffle-stomped it.

Didn’t know how to say no yet.

I once had to clean a public restroom after someone really missed the toilet—and by “missed,” I mean they somehow managed to make a full-on Jackson Pollock-style mess on the floor, walls, and even the ceiling.

    Former hairstylist.

Was doing someone’s hair who had extreme mats. She basically came in for me to de-mat her hair. She said she had just gotten out of a long hospital stay and her hair was neglected during it.

For anyone who doesn’t know, we can see when you text on your phone. I was bored and sitting there 45 minutes into de-mating her hair, and glanced at her phone. I saw a text about how she had tested positive for HIV/AIDS. Okay, no biggie. Explains the recent hospital stay, and I know you can’t get HIV/AIDS from touching someone.

About 2 hours later when I finally finished de-mating her hair, she got up to leave. That’s when I realized she must have started her period, as there was blood in my chair where she was sitting. I quickly cashed her out and googled like crazy how to disinfect HIV positive blood. Thankfully salon grade disinfectants can work.

As I was sitting in the break room letting the disinfectant sit for the recommended amount of time, my manager had the gall to nag me about not taking more clients and letting the disinfectant sit vs immediately wiping it off. She straight up didn’t believe me about the text and blood. I didn’t last long in that salon.

There was a polar vortex in my area a few years ago, and nearly every business was closed. That is, except for my job, which was a bookstore, which is totally not essential enough to remain open. Guess who was one of the people scheduled for that day. What really pissed me off was when I got there, my boss said she was hoping I was going to call and say I couldn’t come in. Oh gee, maybe you could have told me this before I went out in frostbite weather???

I had a few while teaching:

-Having a parent break into the school and threatening to fight me because her son had to sit out water day for assaulting multiple students and teachers.

-Having a student threaten to come to my home and murder me and my family after finding my address online. Other teachers laughed at me for reporting it because this student was the shortest in his class and therefore not a threat.

-This same student sexually assaulted me at the end of the school year and the other teachers talked about me as if I had done something wrong.

-A teacher chested up to me and screamed in my face in front of the entire cafeteria over a misunderstanding. One of my coworkers reported her for endangering students but she thought it was me who reported her. When I tried to talk to my principal about the cafeteria incident she basically told me it was my fault for being a snitch (even though I never reported her before).

-A more senior employee (old enough to be my parent) invited a bunch of us out for dinner. She and her husband kept trying to get me to drink with them and dropped a bunch of hints that they were swingers. I turned down invitations to future outings and she took it really personal. When I left that school she spread a rumor that I was a lesbian (this was a catholic school so this was a huge deal)

Bussing tables in high school. I went to a corner booth and a child threw up in the back of it, it was deep in the cracks. The parents did nothing to even try to clean any of it. I saw it and just walked away.

I had worked 10 hours a day (no overtime) for two weeks straight to get an analysis done for my professor. He yelled at me, gave a mafia style talk about how he was «good» and asking if I was. Sounds weird in hindsight but he was always talking about pulling my funding, and with it my visa to the us.

I told him I would quit two weeks after, and was told to hand in my two weeks or get escorted out the building.

This was for a measly 57k a year, and not even at an Ivy League. Yeah, no, I’m not dealing with that bullshit…

  24. SithDraven Avatar

Typical stuff. Worked a job with three. One got fired, and one left and no one was hired to replace them. I just had to pick up the slack and do the work of 3. I did that for a few months. One of the company meetings the boss said we’re at max staff and not hiring so we had to get used to it. Then I got chewed out for something that wasn’t my fault. Fuck that. That was after 10 years of busting my ass for that place.

When I was in college working as a stock boy in a department store and suddenly they wanted me to act like a security guard after an uptick in shoplifting. After a few confrontations that got ugly I thought to myself, “Nuh-uh. You’re paying me minimum wage to put price tags on stock and put it on the shelves. This wasn’t part of the job description” Getting into physical confrontations over a stolen pack of razor blades is above my pay grade.

I did tech support in the late 90s and early 2000s. Eventually one more “adult” having a temper tantrum because they “needed to vent” about the results of their refusal to read the instructions was the last one.

I was mid-teens, shingling roofs for this guy. We were between jobs and he asked us to help at his small farm. He devised this contraption out of 10’ long, 4” PVC with holes drilled in it and rags stuffed in the holes. The idea was that Round-Up herbicide would be poured into the PVC and would soak the rags through the holes. We would then carry the pipes around our necks and walk through the fields to more or less brush the weeds with the herbicide. He initially meant it for his horses but he “didn’t want them getting toxic chemicals on them”. We quit on the spot.

Me: “Not at all — I’m just not doing it unless it’s actually needed.”
Also me: “I have a life outside of work. It’s pretty great, I try to visit it daily.”

His reply? “Maybe we should look into your work-life balance…”
Sir, the balance is balancing. What you actually want is unpaid enthusiasm. Big difference.

Then he hit me with: “I noticed you used up all your vacation days?”
Yes. Correct. That’s what they’re for.
If you didn’t want me to use them, maybe just give me a nice little 0 days off in the contract next time?

Quit a prison to work in a less stressful job as hospital security. Took a 15 an hour paycut.

Four months into working at the hospital and I’m literally slipping in feces that a patient had smeared while we’re trying to get him under control so he doesn’t hurt himself. Quit shortly after that. If I wanted to keep doing that I would’ve stayed at the prison and made twice as much.

I used to work at a facility that processes old xerox machines and i was on a disassembly line, taking the black toner out and this would leave any exposed skin completely covered in black toner. The only way to get it off was use a huge tank of some sort of alcohol they had on the wall and scrub. Hard. I think i was gettîg paid no more than 12 dollars an hour and this was around 2003. I didnt last long at that job.

Worked as a receptionist at a gym. Found a guy doing naked yoga in the tanning room. When I told him that wasn’t allowed, he said he paid for the full membership and could do whatever he wanted. Yeah, that $14/hour wasn’t covering the therapy I’d need.

Taking over the majority of responsibility during a ciurt martial that was supposed to be run by an NCO that was 2 ranks above me because he ran around bragging about how great he was at running court martials, but he was in fact, not. And then not being given credit where it was due for that court martial. On top if transcribing multiple interviews for that court martial last minute because nobody else fucking did. Thank you Army for adding to that chip on my shoulder of hating people who brag about how great they are and getting some extra brown on their noses at the cost of others.

Side note, retail, wont name the company, trained someone how to be a manager of my crew whem my entire crew wanted me to be the manager. Watched the whole team leave one by one week by week. Had to train 3 people whos sum of any mental capacity was that of a rock. 😐

Tldr people fucking suck, and i will not be advocating for a leadership role until i trust the team around me. Fuck the politics and extra pay if i cant keep what little sanity i have left.

A blockage in the organic waste tank outlet.
    130 cubic metres of waste.
The valve was bent, so when I thought it was closed so I could remove the flange to clear the blockage, i was covered in waste. Head to toe. Sanitary towels, condoms, wet wipes, and a dog carcass.

When I worked as a field based therapist in South LA I found myself in the middle of a lot of random shit that I was not paid enough for. Sex workers approaching my car while waiting to pick up my clients. Gang members and drug dealers approaching me with crowbars asking me why I was there. Homeless people shitting in the wide open. Two naked people having sex outside their car. So many fights and drug deals. Seeing one of my clients arrested while I was there to meet with them for session. The topper was my colleague getting hit over the head with a stick by some random guy just walking by after we finished a session with a client.

Oh, and going to a clients house and finding out their neighbors house had just been shot at and one of the bullets hit my clients house. So fun.

working for dollar general had me running register, stocking, totes, consolidating backroom, signing in vendors, signing in trucks, fucking downstocking, sweeping, mopping, etc ETC. cleaning bathroom, fucking restocking bathroom shit. then counting down tills and doing paperwork and depositing the money and sometimes driving to the bank on behalf of them.

all for a beautiful 16 an hour.

imagine running register, someones ebt isnt working, they’re manually pushing shit in. the lines getting long and the self checkout was discontinued when i was working there (company wide thing). and on top of that having stocking expectations. but you have an entire cart full of shit that’s already fully stocked but for SOME reason it NEEDS to go out…

while also taking out the god damn trash, sweeping, getting ready to lock up. i literally had to run to the register from the backroom because bells weren’t allowed at the front and for the majority of the time, i was the only one in store as a closer.

then you have people whining about the prices and how the price tag doesnt match the actual god damn price… an old lady yelling at my fucking face about how she’s calling the better business bureau

  54. NoxiousQueef Avatar

I was a bank teller about 8 years ago in my early 20s. A cardiologist in my city came in to deposit a check. I saw he had two different checking accounts and asked him which one he wanted to deposit it in. To this day, I have no idea why this was so difficult for him to understand, but he just went absolutely ballistic on me, screaming loudly in the bank and demanding to see someone smarter than a teller who could actually help him. He storms away and sits down in the lobby waiting for another employee to walk in. In the meantime, I take the next customer (super nice fireman FWIW). While I’m helping him, the asshole doctor gets tired of waiting for someone else so he storms back up to me and starts yelling at me again demanding that I help him. I told him I was helping another customer (nice fireman) and would speak to him afterwards. At this point, asshole doctor pulls out his phone and starts filming me screaming that I refused to help him. Then the fireman basically tells him to fuck off because he’d seen the entire interaction from the beginning. So yeah anyway, I’m never allowing some wealthy over-educated asshole to speak to me like that again.
