“Juice is healthy!” My mom still believes this. I don’t think she’s ever read a nutrition label to see how much sugar or sodium is in that “healthy” juice.
‘local honey will help you with your pollen allergies.’
it won’t. local honey is fuckin great and you should buy it, but it’s not going to help you with seasonal allergies. first: it’s not going up your nose (at least, one would assume). second: it’s from the whole previous year’s harvest, so it’s not going to have a spread of pollen from throughout the bees’ active season. third: it’s going to be pollen from insect-pollinated plants, rather than the wind-pollinated plants responsible for your allergies.
I mean, we’re basically made of and controlled by peptide chains, so there probably is, but it’s probably not one of the sixteen or or so sold by a peptide company.
Dietitian here – fearmongering around foods/ingredients by influencers actively pisses me off. It’s harmful and only adds to the miasma of misinformation in the sphere of nutrition. People are so confused about what to eat nowadays because of nonsense like this.
That gluten free means healthy. I have celiac and most of the the gluten free options are even more processed and full of chemicals than their gluten counterparts. But since people think it’s healthy makes a lot more options for celiacs lol
Extremely specific and I don’t see it that often but every time I do I feel like I’m going to have a stroke:
There is this weirdly persistent(*) idea among some women that the tummy pooch that we (most/nearly all of us) have is not fat, it’s the uterus. An unoccupied uterus is like the size of one’s fist, and not only that, there are several layers of things between the uterus and the outside that would “flatten” out the effect of a fist-size organ.
It’s fat. We have fat. Women are supposed to have fat, it’s okay that it’s fat. Also some of that is skin but really it’s fat.
(*) I say “weirdly” but it’s clear that it’s from some form of fat-hating.
Considering that one in five will develop cancer at current world , anyone who can develop a cure for cancer will literally sit on a gold mine and extract a lot of money of it ..
More people will try to buy your drug and profits will go through the roof ..
No. It may feel/look like a cold since it shares symptoms, and tends to be milder nowadays, but it has a much higher likelihood of life-changing consequences than a cold.
this is a psychology one, but our minds are not nearly as trustworthy as we think, we can convince ourselves of anything really, and our memories are likely incorrect in some way even if we are certain they aren’t.
and ppl thinking the carnivore diet is good for you, lack of fiber and nutrients from fruits and veggies can cause major bowel and digestive issues and you are not going to get the nutrients you need.
How incredibly reckless the mental health community is. Mental health is incredibly important and delicate…the way it’s being handled at times shows we need to progress
That Vegan is the healthier option. I’m all for animal rights and I love animals, but there’s no way a Beyond burger with all those chemicals can be any better for me than just a piece of meat. But happy to be prove wrong.
Lately I’ve seen some “influencers” and even some healthcare professionals that claim that “fruit is bad for you” bc “it has sugar”. Eating fruit is not the same as eating a package of cookies, fruit contains fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plenty of other good stuff that our body needs.
Ofc if you eat 5 lbs of fruit a day, you’ll probably have an issue, but everyone should aim to eat at least 2-3 portions of fruit a day.
Vaccines cause autism. The only “scientific” connections they can pull out aren’t from actual experts. There is no actual connection to be found. You’re born with autism, you can’t contract it from something
People vastly overestimate the value of inreasing your basal metabolic rate (BMR, how much energy your body needs to just exist) through gaining muscle.
Whenever it comes up, you have folks stumbling over themselves saying how important it is to gain muscle, because muscle burns calories. The problem is that fat also burns calories, and it’s much easier to lose fat than it is to gain muscle. So even if you’re successful the average person is going to lose a lot of fat, gain a little muscle, and end up barely moving the needle on their BMR as a result.
Does increasing muscle mass increase BMR? Yes. Is increasing BMR beneficial? Yes. Is this benefit so impactful it’s the first thing you think of when someone asks “why should I gain muscle”? Hell no.
That simply being cold or not wearing a jumper means you will ‘catch a cold’ when in reality to catch a cold virus you just need to catch it from someone sick.
8 glasses of water and all the similar hydration myths. Actually yes coffee is hydrating.
Any nutritional belief that can be shown to be incorrect simply by reading the goddamn label. A popular one is that all protein and energy bars are the same as candy bars. Read the labels; they generally have completely different nutritional profiles.
The popular fitness advice that you can’t outexercise a bad diet. Most guys who were high-level endurance athletes in their early adult years know that you definitely can. Cross-country beanpoles putting away entire pizzas was a common occurrence.
The idea that “fitness” is universal. Fitness is only relevant against a goal. The goal might be getting bigger, living long and pain-free, getting laid, or qualifying for the Olympic trials marathon, and the means of measuring “fitness” for each of those may be very different.
sleep debt / bank. if you miss out on sleep the damage is done in real time. during sleep the brain is flooded with fluid. missing sleep prevents this from happening each night. catching up later is good (because sleep is good) but it won’t undo the missed sleep.
That you need to stay awake if you have a concussion. Sleep is really good for your brain and helps it heal. So long as the concussed person is able to have a logical conversation and is otherwise okay and not showing signs of a more extensive injury, it’s fine for them to sleep.
I hear a lot of people say urine is sterile. It is not. Do not put it in your eyes or drink it or put it on your skin. It is a waste product, not a health trend.
As a woman – please for God’s sake, do muscle training. I don’t even care how, but train your fucking muscles. Believe me, you won’t look like Schwarzenegger.
My mom grew up in the “eat 0 fats and do cardio and you’ll be perfect!!” And at 60 she’s so old. Her friends tried to convince her to train with them and change her diet, but no dice.
0% fat diets are stupid. Every “don’t eat THIS” diet is dumbed down. Cardio is cool, but not enough. I’d argue I’d rather only do weightlifting and walking around, than huge amounts of cardio.

Cancer alternative treatments and misinfo. I feel like it actually kills people more than other health myths.
If you tell someone something silly cures a cold – eh, most people will get better from the cold anyway. Cancer kills.
That lemon water “burns” fat.
‘carbs are bad for EVERYONE’.
that drinking 8 glasses of water a day is a strict rule — hydration needs vary for everyone and your body tells you when you’re thirsty.
