Went back home from China in february 2020. Initially I wanted to stay in China and “weather the storm” hoping that it would end in a month or so, however I decided to go home and come back to China eventually to pick up my stuff. 5 years later, quit my job there, my stuff is probably lying on the bottom of the ocean somewhere, I have moved to Finland and am building my career and life here now.
I have no idea what would have become of me if I just stayed in China and kept my job. But I am glad I took the path I did, I would have never met the people I did and spent the last few years of my dog’s life with her otherwise.

Applied for a job in a completely unrelated field that I wasn’t really qualified for when I finished uni. Popped up as a promoted ad on a job seeker website and I was really just looking to practice customising my resume and cover letter.

6 months later I was living in a completely different city and 10 years on I still love it and wouldn’t change a thing.

My friend was supposed to pass by my house to pick me up to go out, he got a flat tire and he stopped to change it, so I was waiting him and decided to open the laptop to see what jobs are bring posted lately online (it was 2015 and online job hunting was beginning to be a trend, at least in my country). I saw an interesting job to which i clicked apply. needless to say, 10 years since then, i started working there, met my current wife there, now living abroad and having the best times of our lives. all of this happened because a tire got punctured.

One night, my friends and I were driving around aimlessly like broke 20-somethings do, just talking about life and looking for a gas station with decent snacks. We pulled over on this random back road so one of us could pee, and there, sitting in the ditch like it was totally normal, was this tiny, filthy puppy with ears too big for its head and the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen. Everyone else said, ‘Let’s call a shelter,’ but something in me said, ‘Nope. This one’s mine.’ I wrapped him in my hoodie, bought him a Slim Jim from the gas station, and took him home. That dumb little mutt is now my best friend, emotional support animal, and the only reason I ever go outside. Funny how a snack run turned into a lifelong friendship.

Owning a cat. I was depressed and always felt that I’m alone in this whole universe. One day, I decided to adopt a sickly cat that was roaming around my apartment and nursed her back to health. It’s a really happy feeling coming home to someone who’s happy to see you. Whenever I’m with her, it feels like everything’s gonna be okay. I finally found a “purpose in life”. Afterwards, I decided to seek professional help and things only got better afterwards.

I decided to skip high school one day and instead went to a company I was interning at.

A pretty prominent person visited that day and I introduced myself and started chatting about some of our common interests. That conversation led to a relationship that lasted years and after graduating from college I moved and became business partners with that person in a startup. All those little things, the people I met along the way, the projects I’ve been honored to have participated in, etc… All came out of me skipping school one day.

I decided not to go to a doctors in summer 2021 as I thought I had a viral chest infection that would just pass.

It transpired that I didn’t have a viral chest infection, I had infective Endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the internal surfaces and valves of the heart.

Long story short, I came very close to dying from the IE, sepsis, multiple organ failure and several TIAs.

I lost my left leg below the knee and my right toes. 6 months in acute care, 3 in a specialist neurological rehab facility and another 15 months waiting for suitable housing.

I’m currently waiting for heart surgery to replace one valve and repair another.

    Drinking Whiskey

I used to have really bad social anxiety and couldn’t function in a lot of areas of my life. It was hard for me to leave my room some days. Then one day I was alone in my room drinking Old -Crow from a 7-11 Slurpee cup and I went out to use the bathroom, but I didn’t feel that same level of shame and anxiety I always felt around my room mates. I did an experiment and tried walking outside. The sun was bright and the air was crisp, but it was a slow day and there wasn’t anybody out there or even any cars driving by. I decided to try walking to the mailbox and see how that felt.

I was scared, but I was also fine. Nothing hurt me, and it actually felt kind of…good. As I was walking back I saw my neighbor walking by and we made brief eye contact, but didn’t say anything. Normally I would have been freaking out over this, but it was amazing, I didn’t feel anything.

I did more experiments in coming days and long story short now I have a job as a letter carrier with my local post office and it’s all thanks to Old Crow. I’ve moved on (and up!) in brands though as my new income has allowed me to focus on what matters most in life. If you want a good bargain I can’t recommend Wild Turkey enough, it’s really a great whiskey for the money.

    Sleeping on the floor.

It was uncomfortable at first, (and still is) but after a few nights, with multiple pillows and blankets, I began to prefer it over my old mattress. Cooler temperatures, almost double the floor space after I roll up my blankets, and now I actually get up when I’m awake instead of laying in there rotting.

Also being someone who moves houses regularly, not owning any furniture besides a desk and a chair makes living that way much easier.

I wouldn’t say it has changed my life forever, I’ll very likely go back to sleeping on a real bed again soon but it’s had some nice positive effects that I wasn’t expecting that I’m sure will stick with me.

Told my sister that I’ve moved on and asked her to look for someone for me (as a joke, didn’t think anything would come of it). 2 yrs later, I’m getting married to the most amazing random dude that she bumped into at a party 2 weeks after I spoke with her.

Decided to give dating a single mom a chance. I was dead set against having a kid, or dating anyone who had a kid. Didn’t want to be a father or a step-father to anyone.

Then I met someone who I really clicked with that had a 6 year old daughter. She held off on introducing us until things got serious, and I (reluctantly) met this kid. Her bio-dad skipped town the day she was born, and that was the worst decision HE ever made.

Long story short, 25 years later I walked her down the aisle at her wedding.

I once missed my usual bus and took the next one, annoyed and half-asleep. On that bus, I sat next to a woman who was sketching in a notebook. Curious, I glanced over and complimented her drawing. She smiled, we talked. She turned out to be an illustrator working on a children’s book. I told her I wrote short stories as a hobby. She asked to read one.

Two months later, we were co-writing a book together. A year later, it got picked up by a small publisher. And somehow, I became an author—because I missed a bus.

We had a party at our flat, and real late my flatmates decided to go to town. I said nah I’m staying home. They were like come come! Ans I was set against it. But then just last minute I was like fuck it! And went and chucked on my best party dress and off we went. Later that night, early in the morning to be exact, I met a guy in a kebab shop getting kebabs. I thought he was very handsome so I went ans hit on him. We’ve been together 10 years now and have 1 perfect kid.

I was recently single and decided I wanted to go to a camping music festival, so I chose one somewhat at random and went by myself. I used to go to raves in my late teens/early 20s and the positive environment was good for my anxiety so I figured maybe I could recapture some of that. Well after the first day I found myself reclusive and regretting my decision to try to be a social human being.

On day 2, I heard someone from the large friend group next to my camp site ask “does anyone have any mustard?” No one responded so after what felt like way too long to me I said “I have mustard.” They invited me to hang out and became my friends for the rest of the weekend.

I started casually chatting with one of the girls from the group over text since we lived in different states, 2 months later she invites me to go see Radiohead with her friends and we’ve been dating ever since. I’m planning to get her a ring this year, all because I had mustard.

I was broke and needed money so I submitted some photos to an acting agency thinking maybe I could make some money as an extra. I remembered I did it as a kid one summer before college and getting paid for it pretty quickly.

I got called on to a film two weeks later and got linked with some pretty notable people. Four years have gone by now and I’m a professional actor. Completely changed everything for me and I never thought I’d love doing this.

Had one of those bosses who made u stay till the very last min even when u finished everything. I work in media production where u get hired for 12 hr days and that boss made u stay the entire 12 hrs. I made my respectful case as to why that was a dumb idea but got turned down and assigned busy work. So I was like fine I’ll just pretend and I opened up tinder and just started swiping out of spite. There was a guy behind me at the other desk who was watching and he saw what I was doing and started laughing and then I’m embarrassed at getting caught and i started laughing. We had a moment over something dumb. After that we never really interacted again. But 3 months later I get a message from him to work on a project. That one small gig turned into 6 non stop solid years of freelancing, working around the world on some pretty cool projects and gave me financial independence.

I never used to stay late to work. I started work at 4am so I’d always get off at noon. One day I just happened to stay late and visit my friend in another department who was an old Asian woman. Just as I was telling her goodbye, a girl in the department she was working in came to the backroom to go on her lunch. My friend started telling us we should go on lunch together. Obviously it was super awkward as neither of us wanted to put the other into a weird position. After some persuading by my old Asian friend, we decided to just to to lunch together.

We had a good time and at the end I was hesitant to ask for her number because I just wasn’t that kind of person. But something told me to just ask her, so I did. She gave me her number and said the only reason she gave it to me is because it was her last day at that store. She didn’t usually date co-workers.

We went on a date after that and several years later, we ended up marrying. She’s my soul mate. For some reason I stayed late that day even though I absolutely hated work back then and never wanted to give more to a company than I had to. But I stayed late on the last day that I could have met my wife. Something told me that staying late that day would change my life, and it did.

I’m forever grateful to my friend and to my wife who makes me a better person in every way.

I was going to work at my childhood camp. The interview was… weird. They offered a position, but the season dates didn’t align well with my school schedule and there was no guarantee I’d work at my camp (staff were rotated through multiple sites).

I had gotten on a camp job board months before and got an email weeks before summer asking if I’d be interested in interviewing for another camp with the same organization the next state over. Phone interview, offered next day, took it.

12 years later I’m living in that state, with people I met at camp. Auntie to multiple of my camp friends’ kids. Pivoted career paths because of the camp experience. Couldn’t have predicted I’d be where I am.

I fucking watched a video of a famous dancing tiger.

Three years later and I have a YouTube channel with damn near a thousand videos mostly from China, I am attending Chinese language classes four times a week, I am working (and learning) on video editing and photography and I had flown across the whole world just to meet him TWICE now. Which was my first time outside my country, first time on a plane and on my own in countries I don’t know the languge of or have any friends in. And likely going again by the tail end of this year.

Was at uni filling out the formal paperwork to study abroad for semester. My advisor urged me to go for a full year rather than only the fall semester. Despite the fact that I had agreed with my parents to only go for the fall semester (because they were having to fund it), I ticked the “full academic year box.” I met my wife in the second semester (ie. after I would have already been back in the States had I not checked changed plans on a whim at the last second).

Back in the early 2000’s I used to just browse the online journals that people would keep. One that I used to browse is freeopendiary. They had a random journal button, and it would allow you to just read exactly that, random journals that weren’t set to private.

That’s how I started a conversation that led to an online relationship with someone 900 miles away, which resulted in me moving there 3 years later. We are no longer together but that whole arc of my life led me to where I am now, and it was the result of being constantly online and bored back in the day.

I crashed my car in September 2020, couldn’t afford to replace it, and Ubers to and from work were too expensive combined with the fact that they didn’t service the area my workplace was in. I found a couple who were taking turns driving me and I paid them $150 a week for it, which worked great until December when their parents were due to fly in from out of state so they needed to quarantine. I was an essential worker in a residential group home, so the threat of exposure was pretty constant. They very helpfully offered to post on NextDoor to help find a replacement, and I got a few texts about the ‘job’. One of which was from a guy; I worked overnights and wasn’t sure about being alone with a man I didn’t know in a car at night, so initially I didn’t text back. A few days later, something urged me to, so I did.

We’ve been together for over 4 years now, have a beautiful and brilliant two year old son and we will be welcoming his little brother on Wednesday.

Affirmed a non-binary student’s identity. In a Catholic school setting.

Don’t get me wrong, I fully stand by what I did for this student. But my supervisor caught wind of it and was pissed. Most of my exit interview was spent discussing this student. Anytime she would deadname them I’d mutter the student’s chosen name.

I left the Catholic Church, and teaching, and went into math intervention/being a paraprofessional in public and charter schools instead. And I’m much happier.

I’m from South Texas but decided to be a Minnesota Vikings fan when I was little. My fandom led me to apply for a special program at a high school outside of my area because I wanted to play sports for a school that wore purple uniforms.

I got in and because I was no longer with people who knew me, I reinvented myself a bit, played a bunch of sports, met my friends that I still hangout with today, and met my wife when we were 16. I followed her to college instead of joining the military.

Ended up in a career I never saw myself in, have been nationally recognized for my work. My wife and I have now been together for 20 years, married for 14, we have three children, own our home, and couldn’t be happier.

All thanks to my affinity for the Minnesota Vikings and the color purple.

Now if they’d just win a damn Superbowl, I could die happy.

I answered a newspaper ad looking to hire for a new restaurant opening up soon. I was 15 at the time but desperate to pad my income besides my paper route. It was a long shot due to my age but I threw caution to the wind. The owners loved me and remarked how mature I was for someone that age. Instead of ending my life that summer as I had planned, I worked for the owners for another 6 years and will always appreciate them for teaching me what it was like to be surrounded by people who appreciated me and treated me as a human being and with dignity.

In November 2020 I picked up some cookies on a Wednesday from a home baker and on the way home (not a road I normally drive, only there for cookies) saw a huge dirt law with a sign for a new neighborhood coming soon. I reached out to a family friend in real estate to see what the homes would start at and if my situation would allow me to purchase. He ran numbers, I did online tours of the homes online and on that Sunday I was signing a contract to buy my first home at 42 after 19 years of being a single Mom.

A year after I was living in my home and loving it just being me and my kids…my neighbors introduced me to a friend of theirs and he and I have bee together ever since. He moved in with us about 9 months ago. If I hadn’t gotten those cookies neither of these things he would have happened.

I was browsing reddit at 11pm after work and I seen this post for an AMA of an air traffic controller. I figured I would just apply for the hell of it and spent 15 minutes fixing up my resume and another 15 creating my account and applying. I didn’t hear anything for two months when I finally got an email to take the atsa (ATC entrance exam), I studied the day before and a few months later I found out I passed and got my tentative offer letter. I’m still going through the process but I’m getting close the end and for the most part its looking great! I literally made $33,000 last year helping people troubleshoot their cell phones… this job averages $140,000 after the first three years. Its crazy that this all started by seeing a post on reddit!

I decided to take some automotive tech classes at the local community college in my area. I’d recently graduated with my bachelor’s and had the idea to restore an old VW. With only a hobbyist’s understanding of how to do so, I enrolled. I learned about the price break that employees of the community college received on classes and started looking at their job board. Before long I was working at their Help Desk. It was full-time, so the class would have to wait. The assistant director of Student Life was a frequent “customer.” Then we started bumping into one another in the halls and getting into conversations about various geekly things. She was super cute. We’ve been together for 12 years, now, and married for eight. I still know jack about cars.

I was depressed and a friend of mine had been trying to get me out of my tiny studio apartment for weeks. It was early spring and the first 75+ day of the year, so when he asked if I wanted to go for a short walk I finally said yes.

Its bright, warm, breezy, and just all around enjoyable. He suggests we go to a park that we used to hang out at. We reminisce on the old times and get a bite to eat at that not so great pizza place just down the street.

On the way back we see an old friend on the street, and I remark “Aw cool! I haven’t seen her in ages.” I was gonna just let her walk on without noticing us because why bother someone with myself. My buddy says fuck that and calls over to her, she and I strike up ca conversation, and before I know it its been 90 minutes and my guy cheeks are numb from sitting on the curb.

She and I have been together for 10 years now. All because I said yes to a walk.

I was in Turkey to get my teeth fixed. I had time to kill so decided to book a medical tourism visit at a hospital in Istanbul— full body scan for obscenely less than what it would cost in the U.S. They found a mass in November 2024, now in chemo with stage 2 breast cancer.

I have no family history of breast cancer, no symptoms, and am also quite young so was not planning to get a mammogram anytime soon.

That casual decision likely saved my life.

  74. mirrabellarey Avatar

One day, I just decided to go for a run. Seriously. It was a boring Sunday, I was sitting in my pajamas scrolling through my feed, and out of nowhere, I thought, “Why not?” I threw on some old sneakers, random sweatpants, put on some music, and headed to the nearest park.
I ran super slow, got winded in like five minutes, nearly died on a bench catching my breath—but there was something about it. The air, the music, the quiet in my head for once. I started running every morning after that—at first just to feel better, but then because it became my thing. A few months later, I literally bumped into a guy at that same park who was also running. Now he’s my husband.
And because of running, I learned not to quit just because I wasn’t perfect right away. I stopped thinking everything had to be all-or-nothing. I even changed careers later, got into something I’d always been too scared to try before.
So yeah, one random run totally changed everything.

1978 – My mother remarried when I started high school to a man in the military. I was uprooted from my excellent schools and sent to less-than-excellent schools.

My Junior year I transferred into my 4th high school. The guidance counselor who met with us to decide my classes asked “Your grades were excellent here, but then you got a C, what happened?”

“My mother got married and I changed schools. My new biology teacher graded me like I had received a zero the first 4 weeks of class, even though I blew the curve the rest of the year”

The guidance said “I would like you to take the PSAT. That will help us decide where to put you”.

My stepfather went on a screaming tantrum “She doesn’t need it! She’s a girl! She’s just going to get married! I won’t pay for it! etc, etc, etc”

The guidance counselor calmly replied “The school can pay for it” Looked at me and asked “Do you want to?”

    YES!! YES!! Please!!!!

I got a National Merit Scholarship from that PSAT. That guidance counselor got both my ACT and SAT paid for.

My parents kicked me out when I was 17 (after I graduated high school) because I wasn’t going to marry the person they had picked out for me and wanted to go to college.

I used to post photoshop artwork on my MySpace account years ago. One day I get a message from a girl from Canada. She said she liked my art work, I said thank you and didn’t think much of it. We ended up chatting back and forth for years, becoming close friends. We progressed to phone calls and video chats and we dated people along the way, but always found reasons to break it off. Finally we decided to meet up, so i flew 2,000 miles across the country and we got snowed in together during a blizzard. We spent 10 days together and it felt as natural as breathing. 18 years later we’re married with amazing 2 kids, and I am still amazed that something as small as replying to a stranger online would change literally everything.

My first year in college at 18, before the fall semester started, I went to adopt a puppy. I’d always wanted a Rottweiler growing up, and I saw two rottie mixes available for adoption. A male and female. I intended to adopt the male, but he’d already been adopted. I was hesitant to adopt the female since I really wanted a male dog, but decided to take her home anyway. She had horrible mange, a terrible skin infection, and GI parasites at just 12 weeks, so I nursed her back to health. My bf at the time broke up with me 2 months later. She became the love of my life. I had her from cradle to the grave, caring for her through her medical issues and regular puppy stuff, and helping her through her old age and complex illness. She in turn, cared for me. Through my breakups, mental health illnesses, lost friendships, graduating without a job lined up, dad going to jail, parents separating, and overall adult shit.

I didn’t go a second of my twenties without her in it. I went from a teen to my thirties with her as my constant. We experienced 6 different houses, 2 college towns, 2 longterm relationships, and had 12 beautiful years together. She was my heart dog and soulmate. My world crashed when I lost her suddenly. I’m still figuring out what the world looks like without her and it’s been 3 years. I don’t go a day without thinking about her.

I would have given half my years if I know we could live the rest together. I miss you everyday, Jude.

Checking a Gmail account I barely used.
I had applied for a visa to go toCanada to work for a year and I was on the waiting list. Totally forgot about it. 3 months later I’m bored and decided to check the account and I had a fresh email from the Canadian embassy to please send them my passport and pay the 150$fee. Visa was approved!
I’ve been living here for 10 years now! Happier than ever 🇨🇦
