Ah yes, subtle sign of intelligence: They scroll through the comments, find one that vaguely describes themselves, and then hit ‘upvote,’ because clearly, that’s what a genius would do. Deep stuff, really.
They can explain very intricate and confusing topics to people with a small vocabulary without making the small vocabulary person feel dumb or intellectually intimidated.
Having the restraint to not speak unless they have something actually useful and relevant to contribute to the conversation. The most asinine people i know always end up being the loudest.
I’ve always thought that those who recognize the intelligence, wisdom, skills of others, are themselves pretty smart people. It indicates that they’re at least aware of the bounds of their knowledge on a subject. Or that they’re more likely to put effort into learning things since they acknowledge that they dont know it. Kind of backwards, but I think those people are usually reasonably sharp to have that awareness.
Conversely, dumb people typically think they’re the smartest in the room. They dont know their boundaries, so I tend to assume they dont know their qualifications either.
My belief is that if you cease to learn then you are dead. Unfortunately there are too many dead people walking around these days. I try to learn something new every day. The bummer about learning is that the more you learn, the more you realize how much you don’t know.
I find that truly intelligent and self-aware folks are far less argumentative about most things. They are smart enough to realize they aren’t experts in every topic AND/OR that arguing with an idiot is not going to benefit them or the idiot, and would just be a waste of time and effort.
Someone who is not set in their ways, but can be flexible and considerate of other views. Even to the point of adopting his or her views based on the new info.
This thread is annoying, we all all idiots. There are no smart people. There are people who are slightly smarter than other people, but when the bar is this low that we look at neil degrasse tyson and think man, this is the epitome of intelligence. The point is we don’t know anything, and we hardly understand even the basic fundamentals. Do you look at chimps and wonder which one is the smartest no because even the smartest one can’t comprehend basic things. We are ever so slightly past them in intelligence. Integrate the mind with AI and we may become smarter but currently there are no smart people.
My smartest friend, a PhD working on nuclear fusion experiments, pretty much only laughs at farts and jokes about farts. Not really an answer to OP’s question, but I thought I’d share anyway.
I agree with previous posts. I intelligence is curiosity. They want to know and if they don’t, they find out from other sources. They also understand that there are some things that are unknowable for now. A curious person in my book is intelligent. Has absolutely nothing to do with education, but I have to say that a good broad education might help. Experience and using that experience is also a good sign of intelligence
There is no such sign, a person can do whatever they want and i don’t think there’s a particular care for reason or meaning or some other nonsense that reddit users abuse to farm karma under a weekly post such as this.
There isn’t one. Intelligence is weird because most people are either very intelligent or very stupid depending on what the person making the judgement chooses to focus on.

A subtle sign someone is very intelligent is if they are a curious person

A subtle sign that someone is very intelligent can be seen in the quality of this very post on Reddit. I am that person.

“A wise man knows a lot, a wiser man knows he has a lot left to learn” or something to that effect
My smartest friend, a PhD working on nuclear fusion experiments, pretty much only laughs at farts and jokes about farts. Not really an answer to OP’s question, but I thought I’d share anyway.
