What’s a tip you can share that may save someone’s life or just be useful to know?

Never mix cleaning ingredients. You will pass out before you know it and probably never wake up again.

Put yourself on the bone marrow donor registry. It’s free, they just send you a cotton swab in the mail to rub on the inside of your cheek, and you mail it back. You’ll get a call if you’re found to be a match.

Matches for bone marrow donation are very, very, incredibly rare, so you may be the only person that is capable of donating to someone in need and saving their life.

I saved someone’s life last year because I randomly decided to put myself on the registry in 2020. If I didn’t decide to do that, the guy would be six feet under from leukemia by now.

Oh and all of the hospital visits, mileage, and any other expenses are covered. They even pay for missed wages from work. It costs you zero dollars, full stop.

    Just do it.

If you are alone and choking on something you can self-Heimlich by throwing yourself against the edge of a counter. Just be sure to hit just below the ribs.

I’ve had to do this twice in my life, choking on food is scary af.

If you drive a car, your chair has a headrest that can be disconnected. This headrest has metal rods in it strong enough to break a window, allowing you to not only escape a sinking vehicle but also save others with you as well.

Drowning is a painful way to go, don’t let yourself and others be part of the statistic.

If your car goes in the water you won’t likely be able to open the door until the car fills most of the way with water.

When approaching cars at an intersection watch the wheels. It’s the easiest way to tell if the car is moving.

Ask the people around you, “Are you OK?” and actually listen to the answer. Especially the ones who whose moods have changed recently.

You may save them from a suicide attempt.

20 minutes of your time listening to someone is better than attending a funeral or finding out they died any day.

No amount of money is worth a person’s life.

If you ever get stabbed or impaled with a sharp object, leave that sucker inside and don’t poke it or twist it. Let the doctors remove it, you will bleed a lot faster if you remove it yourself, let the docs handle it.

I know this is very common advice, but if even one person sees this and remembers it, it was a good comment to add.

Hot dogs are the most commonly choked on food. If you’re feeding them to kids make sure it’s cut small enough to reduce choking. Adults should take smaller bites and chew well.
Don’t drive drunk. It’s preventable when the choice is made not to drive.

Once a week (but ideally daily check), check your water, oil and tyres on your car.

It can save a lot of heartache when you know your vehicle is in good nick.

Checking water, oil and tyres regularly also means you will see things “that don’t look right” and can get it repaired cheaper and quicker than ignoring it.

If you don’t know how to do this, ask an older person or mechanic. They love teaching people who show an interest.

Always drive or travel anywhere like you are not in a hurry.

Not only does it save wear and tear on your vehicle (saves fuel) but also it helps keep your cool when driving (less bad decisions)

You have time to be kind and courteous to other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, thus helping the flow of traffic.

Also, by not being in a hurry, you are rarely late, and not prone to road rage. It makes driving enjoyable again.

Work is not your life. Don’t forget to take care of your health, and do things you enjoy. Some people spend all their time at work just to drop dead at their workplace. Nobody at work will remember you after one week no matter how important and popular you think you are.

Know that drowning is silent. The ones in trouble won’t be flailing and waving their arms, they are usually upright, hardly moving. They look like a quiet bobbing head with dull eyes. So easy to miss.

If you are at the pool or ocean or have to watch kids while they swim, keep your eyes open for the quiet ones.

If you ever get lost, limit your movement as much as possible. Move to avoid danger (animals, incoming tides) or locate water sources. Otherwise, pick a tree and hang out there. Do not cross streams if you can avoid it. I’ve gotten mixed information over the years, but some SAR people swear up and down a dog can be thrown off by a creek.

If bitten by a venomous animal don’t try to orally suck out the venom you could swallow it and if there is even a hairline open wound it could kill you. Instead use a large syringe for suction and make tourniquet and applying above the bite
