I feel like a lot of us are just nodding along at stuff we don’t really understand…
Taxes, wine tasting, skincare routines, flirting, quantum physics — who really knows what they’re doing?
What’s something you’ve faked knowing just enough to survive in the conversation?

I can’t speak for myself, but it seems a lot of people fake their way through parenting

Raising our children.
Faking small talk in general. I’m not great at it and have to force myself to do it. Especially if someone drones on and on about their kids. Ugh.
Parenting. Holy shit, it’s parenting.

I feel like flirting is a huge one.
I work in a sports adjacent field. im definitely more versed in it than before I started, but I just dont like or care about many sports.
but good lord the amount of time we spend talking about this play or that person or some other event. I get ESPN notifications on my phone just to have the tidbit to talk about
Paying an interest to small talk. It’s a struggle…
I thoroughly understand my skincare routine and why I do it, as well as the treatments and potential procedures I would like to get in the future.
I don’t understand skin routines. What your skin looks like depends on so many things, mostly how your digestion is going that particular day, whether you have smoked and what your genetics are.
Sure, I get that people clean their faces with soap (or cleansing liquid, whatever) but all the collagen and hyaluronic acid isn’t going to help you if you have underlying issues, have abused your liver and/ or have wrinkly genetics
Sad to say, but reading. The illiteracy stats are way higher than you might expect, and definitely higher than you wish they would be.
[edit] I glossed over the word “most” in the title. Mildly ironic.
Dancing and confidence. Fake it till you make it
Relationships. Healthy ones to be specific. There’s no way thats real.
Small talk. I think most people fake their way through it smiling, nodding, asking the right follow up questions, when deep down they’re either mentally checked out or socially drained. It feels like this unspoken script we all follow to seem polite or normal, even when we’re not really interested.
This is going to sound horrible, but…caring about what other people want to tell me? Like I am so introverted and conversations are fucking exhausting, I don’t have the energy to both hold a conversation AND have an opinion about it 🫠 please leave me alone with my MMO and my audiobooks
