More of a thriller, but i recently watched se7en and it was really good. I knew the general premise of the movie so by the end i had it figured out but the journey it takes you one was easy to follow and enjoyable
The Conjuring (2013). It’s based on a true story (which makes it even scarier). A family moves into a haunted farmhouse, and creepy things start happening
Shining. It’s the anxiety of feeling things are going wrong mixed with not knowing if it’s all mental illness and hallucinations or if the ghosts are real. So it’s not hack. It’s a mix of common reality, perception of reality with anxiety anger fear while seeing it from our outside perspective of not being sure of what’s really happening but we know it ain’t good. Just a monster or ghost chasing teens around isn’t as real so not as scary. Imo
Pihu. It’s the best because there’s no slasher or natural disasters coming after the characters; it’s just you, the viewer watching helplessly as a two-year-old is left alone in an empty apartment. Mundane items become deadly, and that’s the scariest thing of all.
Last Shift. I don’t remember it being advertised as a bit time movie ever, but the suspense and general “what the fuckery” had me glued to the damn screen right till the end.
I know 28 years later is coming out, but 17 year old me had to stay up until morning light after making the poor decision to watch 28 days later at midnight…

Sinister 1
Scream. I didn’t watch it until years after, but I still think it’s a really solid movie.
It’s probably a tie between The Shining and The Thing (1982)
More of a thriller, but i recently watched se7en and it was really good. I knew the general premise of the movie so by the end i had it figured out but the journey it takes you one was easy to follow and enjoyable

Cabin in the woods 🙌 best ever
Insidious 1&2 were both frightening masterpieces. Also, Sinister was absolutely chilling. Those home movies were a nice touch.
The original Japanese version of “The Ring”.
I love It Follows.
The ring (American). Had to call my wife in to sit with me. She sat so she couldn’t see the screen
Halloween
No Country For Old Men
Honestly? an old 70s or 80s horror film called Carnivore.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe
The Shining. Then an even older one, The Entity.

Psycho.
Alien
When I was 10/11, The Haunting (1963)
When I was 14/15, Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Scary or spooky?
Imo
The Nun of the Conjuring 2, valak is one creepy nun
As Above, So Below.

Blair Witch Project
Hell House, LLC (1) & Carmichael House
Night House with Rebecca Hall was great.
The Strangers
Hush
Midsommar
It Follows
Resolution
Dozens more but those I usually recommend to people looking for a variety.
Talk to Me
A Dark Song. Scared me on a much different level.
Testament
Annabelle
The Crazies
Slither.
Honourable mention to Black Sheep.
Both because they have an excellent balance of scariness, gore, and comedy, with a good plot and creative special effects.
The Shining followed by
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Velocipastor
The original is probably best. Scary Movie 2 was good too though
The exorcist
The Conjuring or The Nun
The Mothman Prophecies
Honorable mention to Fallen (time is my on side)
The original “The Strangers”. The latest one is practically a straight up remake that doesn’t hit the mark, but the first one scarred me for years
Smile, I thought it was unique.
The Descent
Hereditary, although it’s more of a family drama wearing horror as a skin-suit, lmao
HEREDITARY
Amityville Horror
My favorite is The Others.
Martyrs.
The Changeling, original version. Jeebus, creeeeeeeepy.
Scary movie 2 🤣
Event Horizon
So far, Pearl. You’re afraid of the main character, but you’re rooting for her too.
Manhunter
Lake mungo
Amityville series and the Conjuring series, also paranormal activity series
Baskin jumped to the top of my list last year. This movie blew my mind. Love it.
The first Conjuring
Jeepers Creepers, Justin Long really is a underrated movie star.
The found footage of a real alien autopsy in 1995. Obviously, a hoax, but 10 year old me couldn’t sleep for a week after I saw it
Pihu. It’s the best because there’s no slasher or natural disasters coming after the characters; it’s just you, the viewer watching helplessly as a two-year-old is left alone in an empty apartment. Mundane items become deadly, and that’s the scariest thing of all.
Silence of the Lambs movies

The Visit
Event Horizon. Not a flawless film by any stretch, but absolutely terrifying in places.
The Shining
As Above So Below is one of my favorites.
The Ring
Not best ever but some current favorites are Heretic, The Damned and The Cursed
Last Shift. I don’t remember it being advertised as a bit time movie ever, but the suspense and general “what the fuckery” had me glued to the damn screen right till the end.
Possessor.
Event Horizon. Saw it in the theater and it freaked me the fuck out. Still one of my favorite movies of all time

Requiem for a Dream – Midsommar – The Witch – The Lodge
Open Water
Requiem for a Dream
The real scaries are hard to beat.
The Fourth Kind.
Hereditary
I really like the Quiet Place series even if it’s a bit silly. It sets up a sort of helpless tension that most horror flicks fail to realize early on.
Alien
I know 28 years later is coming out, but 17 year old me had to stay up until morning light after making the poor decision to watch 28 days later at midnight…
Scary Movie 3
Not a horror fan for the most part so I’m not sure where this fits – The Conjuring 1 & 2 two thumbs up and I really enjoyed Sinister.
Hereditary
