What’s the best thing you did during a surgery recovery to keep the boredom at bay?

Audiobooks, binged Netflix, read books, friends and family visited

Books, movies, sketching, podcasts. I had a great time recovering from surgery other than the pain and needing help to get to the washroom when I had my hernia operation.

Stuffed my ereader, got a great body pillow, and got some new soft pajamas.

Depending on your surgery and how intense your recovery and medication situation are, the types of activities you’ll enjoy can vary a lot.

When you’re heavily medicated (usually in the beginning), you’ll mostly be sleeping and trying to stay hydrated and eat when you can – having some music playing softly in the background can be nice during this time. Audiobooks or calming podcasts you can drift in and out of can also be good if you want something low-effort.

Once you’re on lighter meds, binge-watching easygoing shows (like reality TV or a series you’ve already seen and find comforting) or listening to silly celebrity podcasts can be great. Light games on your phone (like match-3 games or cozy mobile games) can also be a nice distraction without requiring too much focus.

When you’re fully alert but still recovering, I’ve found things like:

    • Coloring books (or adult coloring apps if you don’t want to sit up for long)
    • Crochet kits or simple crafts
    • Reading (physical books, Kindle, or audiobooks)
    • TV/movies
    • Playing The Sims (or any chill video games you enjoy)
    • Browsing Reddit
    • Journaling (even short entries about how you’re feeling)
    • Building simple Lego sets (they have some cute, smaller ones)
    • Puzzle books (like crosswords or sudoku)
    • Listening to educational podcasts if you want to learn something while resting

The key is to have a mix of really low-effort and slightly more engaging options depending on how you’re feeling day-to-day. Be gentle with yourself – recovery is exhausting even when it doesn’t seem like you’re “doing much.”
