Whats the legality of having lights and ‘police’ on a car like this.

r/

At a intersection where they were doing work on the lights and they were directing traffic. The cars in this municipality look nothing like this. They were wearing vests that said police and had belts with a firearm, magazines, etc but they don’t look like the uniformed officers in the area.

At what point do you get into impersonating a officer/police vehicle?

When you do that and you’re not really a cop.

Call the local police non emergency, they will come ticket or arrest the company.

The funeral escort guys get jammed up for this a lot.

My guess is it’s an officer from another jurisdiction doing an off duty/extra duty assignment.

Probably not someone impersonating an officer.

As the first commenter said it becomes impersonating when you aren’t an actual officer.

It’s probably a cop then. Probably just a pool car they use for special details.

I work for a construction company and when I have a lane closure I’m required to hire off-duty officers to work the lights and control traffic. They are not allowed to use their work vehicles in most jurisdictions where I live, so most get approved to install red and blues on personal vehicles so they can do roadway off-duty work

In my jurisdiction that would be a dual purpose plain vehicle but no police wording on vehicle. Dual purpose meaning pursuit authorized with forward facing red light. Without light package would be a plain vehicle not pursuit authorized.

Wonder if it could be auxillary ? In my area they have vehicles marked aux, but maybe not all areas do ? Aux in my area does traffic, crowd etc during outtages and events.

Do you know for a fact that the vehicle isn’t affiliated with a PD? Looking at it, i would think that it’s a lieutenant or captain’s vehicle.

Well it’s definitely an officer if they’re doing a construction detail. If someone were to impersonate a police officer, they definitely wouldn’t work a boring construction detail job

Probly a swing car for off duty gigs. Or some admin car

    It’s legal because there’s a 99.999 percent chance he’s a cop 🙄🤦

i live in Central Texas. Several of my LE neighbors work OT shifts at highway construction sites or churches etc and have this type of rig set up on their POVs which they use for this OT shifts. Most Departments out here authorize this. This might be the case here.

Provided you’re an actual sworn officer, it’s going to be driven by agency policy. Most agencies absolutely forbid POVs being equipped with anything. Some agencies allow such things for off duty gigs and the scene in the picture is pretty common in Texas metro areas.

When you aren’t a cop. I’d bet you’re wrong and they were cops, directing traffic at a construction site is a common OT gig for cops.

Red and blue lights with the white roof I see this in Texas all the time and there’s almost always a real cop or sheriff or constable behind the wheel. From my experiences they just do their job
