A classmate told me I was intimidating once. I felt like I was walking on air. Another classmate once called me the smartest girl he’d ever met and said I reminded him of Hermione. I wasn’t even the smartest girl in the school, let alone that he’d met, but it’s a compliment I haven’t forgotten.
I was going through a really rough time, struggling with my mental health, and a friend told me, “I can’t imagine living in a world without you in it.”
That one sentence has kept me going for a long time.
The most memorable compliment I’ve received is when people notice how my wife and I take full responsibility at events like weddings, bridal showers, and other programs, and at the end, everyone praises us for doing such a great job!
It was in the context of being surprised I wasn’t dead. Seems like lukewarm praise, but when you’ve been depressed your whole life and told that you never fight for yourself, having your fight to stay alive seen means the world to you.
I had to take my ISD to a hearing to get them to comply with the IDEA. After I won, the mediator complimented the lawyer that I worked with. It was me, no lawyer. It was me, only me.
I was at a grocery store with my boyfriend and we passed a teenage girl with her mom.
I overheard the teenager as I walk by say I was really pretty and had nice hair.
Little teenager, you made my absolute lifetime.
A random lady sat next to me in the hospital and started to vent about her life.
At the end before partying ways but after saying our goodbyes she said: “mind yourself, you have a face that could sink a thousand ships”.
I had never been complimented that way, I couldn’t even reply to it properly. 😅😂
I worked in a nursing home and there was a lady in a wheelchair who couldn’t speak, only babble- one day I came in and she was sitting in the lobby. She told me in perfect English “you’re beautiful”. And I carry that with me always.
It was a period that my classmates were making fun of face because I had acne and cried to my grandpa, he told me that I’m as beautiful as a flower that blooms. I will never forget that phrase, miss him a lot
One time when I was in the hospital the boy I loved had a meeting with my parents to talk about me. My mom is crazy, we don’t get along, and she was bad mouthing me. I know all the details because my dad was there too and told me, but basically my boyfriend stood up and told my mom he wouldn’t let her call me all these awful things in his presence. She had asked why he even liked me anyway, what could possibly be attractive about me. He told her more than anything he was attracted to my mind, he said I was an enigma and the more he learned about me the more he wanted to know.
I know it doesn’t sound that special, but it was because that’s the first time in my life someone has stood up to my mom for me. I’m also very insecure about how I come off to some people because I’m quiet and I know I’m a little weird, and him saying I was an enigma made me feel like I was worth knowing.
“I’ve known you for more than two decades and I cannot think of a single person in all that time who feels anything less than completely warmed by you.”
I once hold the elevator door for an elderly woman. I asked her to come at her own pace and not hurry. She entered and said “Your parents raised you well dear”.
My parents were with me at that time in the elevator and it made them super happy. They even think about it from time to time. That became a memorable compliment over time.
One of my managers recently asked me, “How do you manage to be so meticulous? Every time I come over here I can’t find anything wrong.” Also, a customer at work stopped me and said, “Who does your eyes? Someone needs to take your picture and send it straight to Maybelline!”
I have a HUGE family and my favorite compliment (which isn’t exactly a compliment) is that no less than ten of my siblings and cousins say, “I ain’t going if E.Scorpio ain’t gonna be there” whenever we have an upcoming family get together.
