I think it might be Nattevagten from the 90’s. It got an American remake but they removed a very important scene of them having sex among the corpses in the remake so there’s no explanation how semen ended on the floor which ends up being used to frame him later.
If we have to consider the ones made in the Country, Dario Argento is the golden standard, with Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci following. The house with the laughing windows by Pupo Avati and Todo modo by Elio Petri are personal christmas favorites of mine. Hannibal holocaust instead is for the true romantics only.
The most seen in Italy in general according to a pretty fast search that I just made are It, The sixth sense, The sinister. I would add also The exorcist.
The most watched domestic one is Nightmare – painajainen merellä (Nightmare on the sea). It is a spin off of a soap opera and it is meant for the pre teen audience of the show.
Most watched foreign one is The exorcist. It is 58th most watched movie ever in Finland.

For me, it’s the first Belgian horror film that comes to mind.
It’s about a cheesy singer who gives mini-concerts (for old people and stuff like that), and his car breaks down in a village with a weird vibe.
Child’s Play comes to mind but I’m not sure if it the most popular. Most just call it “Chucky”, by the way.
