What’s the point of karma farming?

r/

I see people accusing others of it all the time. What’s the point of it though? I’ve been on Reddit for years and my karma hasn’t ever influenced any aspect of my experience

People with high karma can sell their accounts or get paid to promote products.

It’s often a way to discredit the post

Gaming subreddits often use it to argue that the post is stupid and don’t deserve to be part of the subreddit since “they’ve already seen it” and it’s “just karma farming”

Some places only let you post with certain karma levels. Others just see it as a gamification.

    It’s fun.

I think that’s going to be most of the answer.

    Advertising.

Many of the most effective subs try to keep bots out by requiring minimum karma to post or comment. Karma farming is used to make accounts that can post ads in all those groups. They quickly get banned so it’s perpetual. Farm Karma, post sneaky ads until you’re reported enough to get banned, start over. It’s mostly bots but humans do it too.
