I graduated a few years back and basically went straight to work, I’ve had no time to browse social media at all and even when I had free time I would spend it with my friends. I quit my job recently and I’m basically living as a potato coach. I’m on social media constantly again and I notice there are way too many posts are either subtly racist or straight up Nazi propaganda (mostly on twitter and instagram), worse part is, if you point it out you straight up get attacked. Reddit seems to be the only place where people are actually normal.
It’s not that just, minorities in general get made fun of to oblivion, I know racist jokes are basically synonymous with internet culture and I’d be lying if I said I’ve never made one, but the people I’m talking about straight up ADMIT it. It’s insane

There’s a reason that a lot of the democrat or left supporters will say things like “Make Racists Afraid Again.” Racism never really went away, it was driven underground as it became seen as unsavory and unprofessional. Now with many highly ranked elected officials being openly racist (and antisemitic, homophobic, etc) So they feel emboldened to openly express these views.
People are not normal on Reddit either
It always has to rear its ugly head. Racism should be a thing of the past. I’m Jewish myself. But yet I’ve only dealt with one person that I had issues with. I am friends with Muslims, arabics, and any other diverse group there is. We all bleed red
Some things never change
Because when things go to pot it’s nice to blame someone else
MAGA thinks it patriotic
People didn’t stop being racist but the rise of the far-right has emboldened people to be more open about it.
Yeah its petty.
Nothings ever just black and white anymore.
As others have said,.. it’s more “out in the open” and acceptable now,. especially because over the past 10 years or so there’s been a dramatic failure of legal accountability.
It’s the same question as “why are people rude on social media?”
The answer: Because they can be. (they can get away with it,. because nobody holds them accountable).
As others have said,. things like racism used to be shamed into being hidden underground things. Those people are back to doing it in more public obvious ways because they are no longer afraid because they dont’ think anyone will hold them accountable.
People in leadership positions NOT being held accountable.. sends a signal to other lower-level people that they can act how ever they want because no one will hold them accountable either.
Just look at who was on the stage at Trump’s inauguration. That’s your answer.
4chan containment broke (and many social media platforms have used the election as an excuse to relax moderation policies)
If you think only one side is being racist you’re either blind, ignorant, or both.
I went on Facebook this morning and it was so hateful and vile I just stopped reading. What I will never understand is the childish crap. Debating and discussing, normal. But calling someone stupid or attacking someone’s looks? It’s just weird. This morning was the absolute worst I’ve ever seen. And the subjects in most cases didn’t have anything to do with politics. Somebody would just swing through and start talking shit.
When I see racist comments on IG, shit like “usual suspects” when it’s a video of blacks doing something wrong, it’s the hundreds of likes attached to the comment that bothers me, not the comment itself. Makes me wonder how many undercover racists are out there.
>mostly on twitter and instagram
yep.
It used to be that being racist was mostly seen as a bad thing and racist people mostly kept their opinions to themselves. Then Trump came along and change that for the worse, like everything else he does.
I recently read on how racism came more out in the open during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, an avowed white supremacist.
People take cues from leadership.
People show their worst selves on the internet. It’s always been rampant. Bots are too busy chasing other bots to take it down now really
this doesn’t exist, sorry.
I’m noticing it as well on every platform. If a black person is doing something questionable, people have a lot to say. If a white person is doing something questionable, people don’t have the same shit to say as the black person.
Social media lacks the filters and finesse of face to face discourse. It is easy to dehumanise the other side online so there is no civility in discussion. People cannot respond proportionately to stuff they see online. There is a constant negative feedback loop to social media that is spilling out into real life. The 24/7 news cycle has latched on to this as an easy way to generate content instead of conducting actual journalism. Politicians see it as another way to get votes. All sides are guilty and all you can do is rise above it.
It’s always been there imo. I mean twitter is more racist now after elon acquired it just becauase they don’t ban people anymore, but the others have always been bad imo.
