I would take my then 9 month old child to Goose Egg park in Santa Monica while my wife worked from home. He made a bunch of friends who have grown up with him. They’re now five years old and learning how to skateboard together. He wouldn’t have gotten into their pre-school and had this wonderful group of friends if the pandemic hadn’t happened.
Worked in the ICU during Covid as an RN. Running short on ventilators. Patients oxygen kept dropping despite adjusting meds, suctioning, etc. The ventilator ended up malfunctioning and I had to manually bag the patient for nearly an hour because no other vents available. All vents were in use by other patients on their deathbed. Everytime I’d come back from a day or two off work most of the patients that had been there before were now dead. Soooo many patients put into body bags. It was honestly so traumatic and it still sucks to see people say that it never happened or “wasnt that bad”.
I saw these two people that were dressed in those yellow suits fight over toilet paper in Walmart. It caused a bunch of other people to start arguing too. It got crazy
In the beginning of lockdown I made a point of smoking a cigarette and walking down an absolutely deserted street in the middle of downtown that’s usually packed.
Felt like an apocalypse movie, it was a hell of a vibe.
Oh also I shit you not I booted up plague inc for the first time in like six years and while playing (we’d been away from internet for a few days out in the Tanzanian bush) a Reuters breaking news notification hit me that a novel virus had gone international.
I made a light hearted quip about how we were fucked and… well you know the rest. The timing could not have been better
The worst: I spent a month in quarantine. Then deployed on the USS Nimitz for 11 months.
The best: I said fuck this shit and dropped my retirement paperwork. Being a civilian is so WONDERFUL!
I almost died. Dec 2020. I was 32yo and I had every symptom, developed pneumonia, and had a very low oxygen saturation. They got me started on antibiotics and it saved my life.
My wife’s grandfather died from the same strain shortly thereafter.
Worst story- not being able to say goodbye to my mom in person as she lay dying in the hospital from kidney failure, due to that hospital’s strict Covid protocols.
I caught covid and pneumonia and almost died. Had my vaccine and my 2nd shot. I thought I was done. I had my will and everything ready. But by the grace of God I survived. I guess it just wasn’t my time
Best: Watching Tiger King in my hospitalist office in March 2020 after Covid scared everyone away from the hospital and we didn’t get the influx of Covid patients (yet)
Worst: basically all of the time after that brief hiatus. 6 of my colleagues got sick at once (1 in the ICU), so had to use 6 backup physicians. My colleague at my old hospital needed a Department of Defense government physician to help out. The first 4 Covid patients I admitted all needed upgrades to the ICU later (1 died). The hiss of oxygen from >1000 liters a minute going into 20-25 patients on the Covid floor. Lots of other things I repress.
I had a bleeding ulcer hemorrhage after two years without symptoms. Ended up in ICU for a week needing multiple transfusions. That was the worst. But the best part was learning who my real friends were.
Me 2020: I’m fine. This isn’t that bad.
Me 2021: in the hospital w/ COVID pneumonia – almost died but made it.
Them 2022: it’s over!
Me 2023: back in the hospital with COVID.
Them 2024: it’s really over, now!
Me 2025: COVID again but no hospital. Yay?
I was in my newly built shed sitting on a dry cement bag, drinking E&J Brandy out of the bottle, listening to tunes on my phone speaker set in an empty mason jar (it had held a collection of random sized screws but I dumped those out on the shelf built from scrap), just vibing and taking some space from the fam. The rain was pattering on the roof, the Five Stairsteps sounded pretty fuckin’ good on my iPhone 6 and the smell of fresh 2×4’s was inspiring. For a few moments, anything was possible. I had reached the peak.
I had a part time job and an Apple Store. The store closed for 4 months. They upgraded me to full time pay while we were closed. I had a 4 month vacation with increased pay while not counting against my vacation time.

January I was watching a video of China in martial law lockdown. I felt it was important and my buddy was like “America could never do that”…
Got divorced
