When did you stop feeling like an imposter at work?

r/

I’m currently 24 (turning 25 in a few months) and I’ve been working in a corporate role at a bank for nearly three years now. Recently, we hosted an insight day where a group of students, around 16 to 18 years old, came in to learn about careers in banking. I was part of the team running the event, and while speaking with them, I had this surreal moment, like “shit, I’m one of the adults in the room now”. Without sounding corny, it genuinely feels like yesterday that I was in the same position, prepping for exams and university applications.

It really hit me how much time has flown. Sometimes, I catch myself at work and have to pause for a second just to process it, like, I’m a full-grown adult with responsibilities, part of the system I used to rely on not that long ago. It’s wild how quickly that shift happens.

Everything feels that way. The reason you feel uneasy is that no one knows 100% what they are doing, so things are always a little off.

45 here. Veteran, former engineer and manager. Never stopped feeling like an imposter. Corporate life was never my jam. Self employed since COVID. I run heavy equipment, light construction, build stuff in my garage, handyman work, even mow a few lawns. I have never been happier.
