When does night time potty training happen?

r/

My son 2.5 is fully daytime potty trained no accidents still learning how to wipe properly tho

When can we start ditching overnight diapers?

Is she dry overnight? Sometimes it can be easy to miss if they pee just as soon as they wake.

For most of my kids, night training happened concurrently with daytime training, if they weren’t already waking up dry. Couple took a little longer, like two or three months I think. It’s one of those things that pretty much happens on its own timetable, by the way, so if it takes a little while that’s just what happens and it’s nothing you need to be fussed about. I’ve talked to a lot of moms over the years and I’ve seen some people take pretty extreme measures and still be frustrated when it doesn’t work. I’d advise not getting started going down that road. Just be patient.

It’s incredibly variable. It depends entirely on when that little switch kicks in that connects the brain to the bladder and says “Wake up! You need to pee!”

My daughter didn’t get dry at night until she was almost 7, and we had to use an underwear alarm to get there. (She had asked for help getting out of nighttime diapers.) Some kids take even longer. So have patience and keep using diapers at night. This is normal.

There is a hormone (ADH) which signals your brain to wake up when your bladder is full. Children will develop this hormone at different ages. My son was dry at night at 3, only a few months after daytime potty training. His cousin is almost 5 and she still wears diapers at night. There is really no way to “train” that.

I would start whenever he’s happy to start.

One of my kids refused to wear them overnight once she’d mastered day time (similar age to yours), and had zero accidents. The other agreed to try once she’d mastered day time, and had the very occasional accident (maybe 3 or 4) but mostly was good.

I think it’s good to start them thinking about it, and learning to wake up when they need to go. As others have said, for some it may not be possible if they haven’t matured enough developmentally, but part of it can actually also be them being aware of a need to wake up and getting their brains able to recognise that signal. Worth a try maybe, and if you’re having no luck then leave it for a bit and try again.
