When to reach out to the journal?

r/

Hi all,

I’ve submitted a manuscript to a Q1 sociology journal in July. To my surprise (I tend to be pessimistic about my chances) it wasn’t desk rejected, but moved to reviews. Problem? It’s been in reviews since last August.

Am I pathologically impatient, or is May (9 months into the process) the time to reach out to the journal to ask whether I can expect the reviews any time soon? Honestly, I’d even settle for a rejection, just so that the paper is released from the grip and can be moved to another journal. What do you suggest? Is it OK to reach out, or shall I wait? Thanks!

I’d reach out – that’s far too long with no update IMO. When was the last update in the author portal?

My standard is usually to send a mail asking about the status at around 3 months, maybe later if the period spanned a big holiday.

From the on a mail every month. Taking this long is not acceptable.

Does the journal have a average amount of days to publish in their aims and metrics section? I think near a year is kinda crazy, imo
