When were times you caught yourself being prejudiced?

r/

I’m a woman. I’m embarrassed to say that I caught myself being prejudiced against another woman. I called an electronics store to get a certain type of cable and talked to a guy but he had no idea if they had what I wanted and said I should go to the store. When I got there, I saw him at his desk and a young Asian woman behind the counter (I’m Asian too ironically). I assumed the young Asian woman would know nothing so I really wanted to talk to the guy, but he was busy on the phone so I begrudgingly went to ask her. Well guess what? She knew exactly what I was talking about and found in like 2 seconds. She knew more than he did in that instance. When have you caught yourself having prejudices?

I walked into a hotel a few years back and the receptionist was male with masses of tattoos including on the neck . I felt that sort of feeling, prejudice, that he wouldn’t be polite. He was brilliant. Professional but quite funny too. Quick, polite . Everything you could want. Made me less prejudiced about tattoos.

I feel prejudice against people that walk up to me and treat people like us in customer service like we can’t do our job based on how we look.

Thats so funny, every time i go to home depot its always a woman who ends up helping with what i came in for. The prejudice would be that ive become so used to it i made a comment like thank you ive been back 3 times, sometimes it takes a woman to get something done we laughed but then she called the guy to get the heavy item super high on the lift and we both felt kind of bad

I saw a guy in his 70s with a 6 year old in the library and made a ass of myself by saying it’s nice grandpa takes you to the library. The man confronted be and was angry informing me he was the father.

I work in a very hands on mechanical field and travel a bit for work, was in mining for a bit all male mechanics and fitters, but their was one 3rd year apprentice plant mechanic who was a girl, she knew bugger all about how to do basic stuff like tapping a new hole or make a bolt, stuff you learn in first week of tafe/ trade school.

I was very dumb founded and thought she was hopeless and a total idiot, turns out, all the guys where being extra friendly towards her and didn’t want her to complain to the big bosses, or where trying to get her pants so they just did most of her work for her and let her do her own thing, so I got so fed up with it, i ended up being more annoyed with the guys that the girl, as the guys was doing her disrespect by not teaching her anything.

I talked with the superintendent ( think manager level position) and we talked with her and we came to the conclusion she needs a proper mentor that can do one on one training, I was a contractor so I said no, the guy they chose was pretty good, knew more shit than me was very honest and brutal.

From, what understand she’s doing rather well with engine rebuilds and pump rebuilds now, I gave her a card for a company I work for that travels and does more bush mechanics and alot of variety with our work, when she gets experience she can work solo on her own jobs, and get a work ute and a decent pay rise.

I was in line at Walgreens. I was standing behind a girl I presumed to be an ignorant country bumpkin based on her accent and the way she was dressed. She surprised me when her young son made fun of the nail polish saying “that’s for girls”. She corrected him and said nail polish is for anyone who wants to wear it. I had projected this image of a backwards hillbilly onto her and I turned out to be very wrong. Edit: oops. Didn’t realize I was in AskMen.

There are a lot of people who will tell you that it’s impossible for anyone who isn’t white to be racist. The reason they say this is because racism requires power. This is an incredibly stupid opinion. Just because white people are in a position of power in the USA and some other parts of the world, that is absolutely not true in all of the world.

I grew up in two places – Seattle and Saipan (the third island north of Guam). In case it’s not obvious, I’m white (or haole, as we’re known there). In some ways, white people on Saipan get preferential treatment. This is particularly true in the professional sector. Add into that the fact that most white people living on Saipan are wealthy, or at least not impoverished, that of course brings added privileges.

However, as someone who went to a public school (2 haole students in a school with a population of 1,500), I can tell you, with no uncertainty, that I experienced blatant racism, literally every day. You have no idea how many times a complete stranger has said to me, “focken haole, go home!”. I was like, dude, my home is two miles from here. I’m a child. I did not choose to come to this island. WTF?! Even grown-ass adults would say that to me. I’ve survived attempted murder twice on Saipan, and the reason they tried to kill me was the color of my skin.

And then there’s the fact that I’m queer (pansexual), so I don’t think I have to explain how I’ve been discriminated because of that.

I was sexually assaulted at a very young age, and I imagine that the reason I was chosen as a target is because I acted “girly”. I developed Borderline Personality Disorder as a result, and so compared to other people, my daily behavior can be seen as weird or strange. Of course I’ve gotten negative treatment because of that.
