I go out of my way let him inspect things. Dogs experience the world through their nose, them smelling something is like us looking at something. It’s like “leveling up” your dog, in a round-about way.
But my guy is also the most well-behaved, respectful golden retriever (in other words, just a regular golden retriever), so he’s not like digging through for something to eat, he’s just curious. Some dogs aren’t like that, so I understand people not wanting to rile up the pup.
Very briefly to see if she gets a toy or treat, I don’t think she even really sniffs more comes and has a look at how we behave. If we don’t do that within the first two minutes of placing the bags, she walks off and has no interest as she knows she won’t be getting anything of value.
The moment I walk in my mixed Great Danes entire head is in my reusable bag trying to investigate. He also knows I always get him a snack because he’s a very very good boy.

Snacker aka Baxter found the milk bones and had the box halfway open by the time I got back inside with the rest of the bags. He was such a little shit..I miss him.
Yes! We bring home a new toy for her every time we grocery shop so she’s gotten into the habit of coming out onto the porch, inspecting the bags, taking her toy, and running back inside. It’s so cute 🩷
Absolutely. My dogs are always looking to see if I brought them home a treat or a bone. They also go through my purse like thieves!edit: edit to add I know this makes them sound like untrained assholes but they never damage anything. They just know I sometimes put special treats in my purse.
That cats defintely do. Gotta make sure there’s no cheddar. Oh wait, there IS cheddar? And then all 6 lbs of her will try to drag 8 oz of cheese across the floor

Idk about dogs (or how true this really even is, however, it does make sense) but I read somewhere since cats are hunters they assume that when you leave and come back with goodies you must have been doing the same thing and they want to inspect your haul. Kinda funny cuz my cat definitely gets all up in my grocery bags and any time I eat something she wants nibbles. She really likes fruit, cheese and yogurt. 🤷♀️
Yeah I usually have cat food with me, or treats. One of my cats likes to chew plastic bags but joke’s on him because I have a plethora of tote bags now that I live on my own
Big ‘ol Head in every bag, some good sniffs and of course all over momma to give the all clear every single time I walk in the door with something. He also inspects every cupboard that is open enough for his huge head to fit into.
