“When’s the wedding? You’re not engaged yet? When’s the ring coming?”

r/

Does anyone else in a long term relationship get constantly bombarded by questions like this? My boyfriend and I have been dating 5 years, but we started dating at 16. We JUST graduated college. For the past year we’ve both heard this from EVERYONE. Friends, family, strangers, acquaintances, coworkers.

Why would we even be thinking about that right now? Where’s the money coming from? Why is it based off the length of time we’ve been together? We are not in a life stage where that makes any sense. Is it not plain rude to ask this?

We’re on the same page, that yes we want to marry each other eventually, but we’re in no hurry but we’re not ready yet and we certainly won’t go into debt for something like that.

Rant over. It’s just getting old hearing the same stuff regurgitated over and over again.

People push others into marrying to satisfy their own idea of “right” or “normal” and then lament when marriages don’t work out. I don’t get it either. Good for you and your partner for being self aware and mature enough to wait for a time when it makes sense for your own lives, both individually and as a couple.
