I know that the first vacation my parents took me to was Corsica. I know we went there by ferry so the first other country I went to was either France, Switzerland or Austria, depending on the route. I should ask my mum
I may be from Iowa, but I think Florida counts… otherwise I once took a day trip to Belgium. Absolutely one of us barely spoke French well enough to order a dress online, and the guys running the parking garage screaming at us did not help. I did manage to buy a pint and a few novelty packs of cigarettes though, really wish I had kept them… honestly though I guess working in Germany should have counted too just so much I should have appreciated that I just hated at the time.
I’m from California. The first international vacation I took was a high school sponsored trip to Europe. We started in London, and visited 7 countries in 30 days.
A month backpacking around Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Phuket, Thailand, after one night in Bangkok (and yes, that song was heard more than once, everywhere in Thailand)
I don’t count daytrips to Norway, Finland or Denmark, since it was short drives (or ferries, or even walks or bikerides in a couple of cases) and I didn’t even spent the night.
Just crocery shopping and maybe a few beers, while spending time in the area, though near the border.
Australia, the day we arrived there was a nation wide strike of transport. Eventually there was a plane scheduled to go to Canberra which we caught, was full of tourists only. When we arrived to go get our luggage were told it hadn’t come with us and was still back in Melbourne. Fun times.
I guess technically France; my parents and grandparents took a trip to Paris and London when I was 3 years old. I don’t remember it though.
When I was 17 we went on a cruise to Mexico, that was cool.
But when I was 19 I took a trip – used my own money, didn’t go with family – to Taiwan to visit a friend out there studying.
I often consider Taiwan my first real international trip because I planned, booked, and funded it by myself, and I was a legal adult. But I guess it’s France lol
United States. Parents drove us down to Florida from Ontario when I was 4. We went back to the States a whole bunch of times when I was a kid. The only other country I’ve been to is Japan (lived there over a decade).
Lots of catching up to do. UK high on the list and likely next, but the list is long.
I’d honestly like to see a lot more of the States, especially as an adult with agency and funds, but if I go down there it has to be on a trip as carefully designed as possible to avoid giving my money to American corporations. I’m not going full “Boycott the US forever” like a lot of Canadians because that’s overly-emotional and stupid, but I’d prefer my money to go directly to American business owners rather than to corporations when possible – especially those that back the Republicans.
