Which is your favorite childhood memory?

r/

Going to the beach with my favorite aunt (she died young) and playing in the sand with my brother whom I don’t get along with today. Life was easier when I was a child.

Man I have a few. As I grow older and make memories with my children, my childhood memories fade a bit. Teenage years yes, but early childhood, they’re a bit blurry. I have one in particular; my dad and I, when I was roughly 5, would always do Sunday laundry together. Mom would work and sister was a sleep, but I was an early riser. We would dump all the laundry on the couch and he would turn on MetalMania on VH1 Classic and we would just jam out and fold clothes. Was our thing.

I was spending all my holidays in the countryside at my grandparents, it’s a small thing in the grand scheme, but I still very clearly remember waking up to see the world covered in snow and later on grandpa taking me to sled down a hill. Nothing out of the ordinary happened but it’s something I very distinctly remember, the bumpy ride down the hill, the cold air against my cheeks, me rolling through the snow in one of those snow onesies for kids, I remember how much I laughed.

Now we barely get any snow, and that hill seems so much smaller than it seemed back then, but i doubt I’ll forget it.

Our family yearly vacations to Ocean City, NJ. The joy of seeing the island appear as you approach on the causeway still sticks with me today.

When I was 9 or 10, I got a haircut and spent the day with my Dad. I hated getting haircuts as a kid, so I’d try to resist them for as long as possible. My Mum usually did them. But my Dad let me take the day off from school (I think my Mum made him do it) and we went to a barbershop. Afterwards, we got lunch and he even bought me a game for my 3DS.

I have a lot of favourite memories, but this one stands out. I really enjoyed spending time with my Dad, which I didn’t get to do often as a kid. Plus as a middle child, my younger sister would usually get preferred treatment. He isn’t perfect, but sometimes he steps up in ways no one else can.

Graduating high school. I’ve never felt that careless and free ever since.

Easy. It’s the one where I had absolutely no responsibilities, zero bills, and I could eat an entire pizza without feeling guilty or getting heartburn. Ah, to be young and ignorant of the existential dread that comes with adulthood. If only I could go back to the days when my biggest worry was how many hours I could spend watching cartoons without getting caught.

Oh, wait, that’s still me now… minus the cartoons.
