Caitlin Clark, stewie, Delle Donne, griner, taurasi. Idk how well known they are and there are a few others (especially due to UConn basketball back in the day) but most likely those either due to the rising popularity of women’s basketball or their sheer longevity, or the unfortunate situation for griner
the only names I can think of are Lisa Lesley , Caitlin Clark (the goat) and that chick who is obsessed with her and can’t make layups. angel reeze maybe?
Off the top of my head, I could only name Sheryl Swoopes, but I do know who most of the women are in the other comments. I just couldn’t recall them on the spot.
Perhaps for the wrong reasons. And it seems I’m wrong on this, by a lot of Clark voters. But Brittney made a name for herself in and out of BBall… being famous and getting into a Russian prison can do that.
Going against the grain and say there isn’t one. If I’m being honest even looking at the comments saying Clark, I don’t think I could even point her out in a lineup. I know some older female basketball players, or some who played college basketball. But I wouldn’t exactly say that any of them would be a household name.
The right person to ask is a person like me, who doesn’t know anything at all about female basketball players, doesn’t follow the sport at all, and barely knows anything about male basketball for that matter.
If there’s a female basketball player that I know about, then they’re definitely the most well-known one in America.
I couldn’t name a single one besides that chick who brought weed to Russie but couldn’t name her. I can also only name one team. I’m not much a pro sports person. I could go years without watching a sporting event on tv
The only female basketball player I know the name of is Caitlin Clark. And that one that got arrested in Russia: Brittney Grinder or something like that.
Caitlin Clark, Brittney Griner, Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie maybe. Those are the ones that I think have become known past those who are fans of women’s basketball.
Clark is most well known, but A’Ja Wilson is probably the best overall player. Clark got very famous for her college career and no one can name a WNBA player, so everyone just assumed Clark was the best in the WNBA as soon as she got drafted.
I may be potentially biased as I’m a Duck fan. (Where she played college ball)
And if it hasn’t been hammered home enough, Caitlin Clark has become one of the most recognized American athletes, let alone as just the most famous female basketball player. She has eclipsed normal WNBA stars several times over.
Before Brittney Griner was held by Russia and Caitlin Clark got national publicity, the only two women basketball players I ever knew by name were Yolanda Griffith and Sheryl Swoopes.
100% Caitlin Clark and it’s not even close. Before her if you would have aaked me to name a woman player, I would have said Suzie McConnell from the Olympics in the 80s and that is only because I remember her on the Wheaties Box.
I have heard of Cheryl Swoops and Swin Cash but they wouldn’t have been the 1st ones I thought of.
Before Clark, there was Lisa Leslie. I remember her being in commercials. Sue Bird maybe? I’m not sure why I know that name, but without googling I think she’s a star.
Caitlin Clark I guess. There isn’t really any female basketball players that are household names. I can’t name more than like 4 and I’m a big sports fan
Not a basketball fan, WNBA or NBA. I could probably name a VERY small handful of NBA players… if you let me name retired guys too.
WNBA?
I can name 3 without looking it up:
Caitlin Clark – known for being an attractive young lady who seems to be able to ball better than just about any other woman on the court.
Brittany Griner – The drug user we got out of a Russian prison, but probably shouldn’t have.
Angel Reese – The drama queen who thinks the rise in popularity of the WNBA “Isn’t just about 1 person, it’s about me too and I want y’all to realize that”. She apparently throws more bricks than I construction worker building a brick house.
Here in Seattle, Sue Bird was a big deal for those who followed women’s basketball… which was about 1.1% of people, it felt like. (I just made that number up but I stand behind it)
But before her – Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, and Sue Bird.
In the 80s it was Cheryl Miller. Her brother is NBA hall of famer Reggie Miller, and there’s famous interviews with them where Reggie talks about how much better Cheryl was growing up. There’s an argument to be made that Cheryl Miller (and Clark for that matter) could’ve earned a NBA roster spot on a team.
Caitlin Clark by a mile. I wouldn’t say another female basketball player has achieved household name status. After her, Lisa Leslie was the only other that was sometimes recognized by non-sports fans.
And maybe Griner because 1)she can dunk and 2) she got arrested in Russia. And Ionescu is decently well known because of all star 3 pt success.
Caitlin Clark. They are trying to make some other people happen now but she’s the only one I have ever heard anyone genuinely care about. It helps she was really good in college (women’s college basketball is far more popular than the wnba)
Caitlin Clark! It was Brittney Griner before that, and Candice Parker before that… then maybe Maya Moore… and probably was Chamique Holdsclaw before that. Sue Bird, Rebecca Lobo, and Kara Lawson were also in there asking the way.
Outside basketball fans likely Caitlin Clark. Before that would have been Britney Griner mostly due to what happens in Russia not her playing. Before that not sure anyone other than maybe someone on the Olympics team I can’t even think of now.
Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, Candace Parker and Caitlin Clark are all some players I’ve heard of. Not all of them became well known for basketball though (Griner for instance being taken hostage by the Russian government.)
Caitlyn Clark. I wouldn’t say “household” name recognition to be honest with you but she’s the most well known. I don’t actually know anyone who follows women’s basketball aside from me in passing
Comments
Probably Caitlin* Clark
probably Caitlin Clarke? I think?
Brittney Griner, mostly because she’s a punching bag for the GOP because she was unwilling part of a power play by Russia to project “soft power”.
CC because she’s trendy.
Caitlin Clark right now.
Caitlyn Clark undoubtedly. Before that, maybe Sue Bird or Diana Taurasi.
Caitlin Clark or Paige Bueckers right now.
Caitlyn Clark.
Brittney Griner, but that’s because she made it into the news for other events.
But yeah Caitlyn Clark, easily.
Should be Diana Taurasi, but it’s probably Caitlin Clark
Clark, Bueckers, Swoops, Griner (but not for basketball)
Probably Caitlin Clark or maybe Angel Reese
Angel Reese.
100% for sure Caitlin Clark, with Paige Bueckers in 2nd.
In Seattle people know Sue Bird.
Caitlin Clark, but there are other players like Sue Bird and Sabrina Ionescu who show up in a lot of TV commercials.
Candace Parker
Caitlin Clark
Caitlin Clark by a country mile
Most people can name approximately one pro female basketball player.
the only names I can think of are Lisa Lesley , Caitlin Clark (the goat) and that chick who is obsessed with her and can’t make layups. angel reeze maybe?
When I was a kid it was Sheryl Miller.
Caitlin Clark is literally the ONLY female basketball player whose name I’ve ever heard other than Cheryl Miller, Reggie’s sis.
Asking a question you already knew the answer to. Caitlin Clark is the most well known female basketball player in the world
Sheryl Swoops?
Sue Bird for anybody over 30, Caitlin Clark for anybody under 30
Off the top of my head, I could only name Sheryl Swoopes, but I do know who most of the women are in the other comments. I just couldn’t recall them on the spot.
Caitlyn Clark and Britney Griner are the only female basketball players that most people have heard of.
Clark for being really good. Griner for getting arrested in Russia with weed.
It’s Caitlin Clark and it’s not even close.
It’s Caitlin Clark and it isn’t close.
By far Caitlin Clark
Brittney Griner
Perhaps for the wrong reasons. And it seems I’m wrong on this, by a lot of Clark voters. But Brittney made a name for herself in and out of BBall… being famous and getting into a Russian prison can do that.
Caitlin and she just was on Netflix’s “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” with David Letterman
Lisa Leslie
CC, without question.
I grew up in the Pat Summit era of Women’s College Basketball. I have watched some great players Clark will go down as the GOAT
A’ja Wilson is fairly well known, but yeah I think Caitlin Clark is a household name right now
Caitlin Clark was the face of the WNBA before she even played a single WNBA game lmfao.
Going against the grain and say there isn’t one. If I’m being honest even looking at the comments saying Clark, I don’t think I could even point her out in a lineup. I know some older female basketball players, or some who played college basketball. But I wouldn’t exactly say that any of them would be a household name.
The only one I can name is Lisa Leslie. And that’s because I played backyard basketball as a kid.
The right person to ask is a person like me, who doesn’t know anything at all about female basketball players, doesn’t follow the sport at all, and barely knows anything about male basketball for that matter.
If there’s a female basketball player that I know about, then they’re definitely the most well-known one in America.
And the answer is Caitlin Clark.
As someone who does not follow any sports, it used to be Sheryl Swooped, but now it’s probably Caitlin Clark.
What these other people said
Pretty sure most people I know couldn’t name a single player though lol
I couldn’t name a single one besides that chick who brought weed to Russie but couldn’t name her. I can also only name one team. I’m not much a pro sports person. I could go years without watching a sporting event on tv
Caitlyn Clark
The only female basketball player I know the name of is Caitlin Clark. And that one that got arrested in Russia: Brittney Grinder or something like that.
Caitlin Clark, for sure, because she is everywhere. Honorable mentions to Britney Greiner and Angel Reese (rivalry with Clark).
Has to be Caitlin Clark because she’s the only one I’ve heard of. Not a sports fan.
Nancy Lieberman
Caitlin Clark is the only one i know as someone who is totally unplugged from sports
Caitlin Clark, Brittney Griner, Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie maybe. Those are the ones that I think have become known past those who are fans of women’s basketball.
For a long time Lisa Leslie was up there, now I’d say it’s Caitlin Clark, Britney Griner, and I think Angel Reese will be there soon.
Clark is most well known, but A’Ja Wilson is probably the best overall player. Clark got very famous for her college career and no one can name a WNBA player, so everyone just assumed Clark was the best in the WNBA as soon as she got drafted.
No idea.
Caitlin Clark
Angel Reese
Sue Byrd
in that order
Sabrina the basketball witch Ionescu!
Caitlin Clark
Caitlin Clark, by far
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have been making the headlines lately. I can’t name another one.
Now days it is Caitlyn Clark, but back in my youth it was Lisa Leslie
Sue Bird but I’m from Seattle
The only one I can think of is Lisa Leslie, but I don’t follow sports lol.
At the moment, Caitlin Clark. She really sparked interest in women’s basketball.
Clark. The other mentioned below I could not ID them based on a photo of them
Currently Caitlin Clark. Previously probably cheryl miller, sheryl swoops, Turaisi, Candace Parker, and lisa lesley
I know Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Britney Griner, Diana Taurasi, Cheryl Miller
Before Clark, there was Lisa Leslie. I remember her being in commercials. Sue Bird maybe? I’m not sure why I know that name, but without googling I think she’s a star.
Caitlin Clark I guess. There isn’t really any female basketball players that are household names. I can’t name more than like 4 and I’m a big sports fan
At different points in time, I’d say Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker, Brittney Griner, and Caitlin Clark.

Here in Seattle, Sue Bird was a big deal for those who followed women’s basketball… which was about 1.1% of people, it felt like. (I just made that number up but I stand behind it)
Brittney Griner might be because the prisoner exchange with Russia was a huge deal that a lot of non basketball fans are aware of
Caitlin Clark is your only answer.
Caitlin clark and that one woman who is always mad about caitlin clark and had a happy meal.
Clark fit sure today. But Candace Parker is famous to college b ball fans. VFL
Historically, Lisa Leslie but right now it’s by far Caitlyn Clark.
Lisa Leslie in my day.
Caitlyn Clark now.
Caitlin Clark or Brittney Griner
Caitlyn Clark!
Caitlin Clark easily
Caitlin Clark. They are trying to make some other people happen now but she’s the only one I have ever heard anyone genuinely care about. It helps she was really good in college (women’s college basketball is far more popular than the wnba)
My 65 year old dad who has never watched a basketball game knows Caitlyn Clark. For the NBA he only knows Michael Jordan.
Caitlin Clark! It was Brittney Griner before that, and Candice Parker before that… then maybe Maya Moore… and probably was Chamique Holdsclaw before that. Sue Bird, Rebecca Lobo, and Kara Lawson were also in there asking the way.
Couldn’t tell you.
Clark or Sue Bird.
Outside basketball fans likely Caitlin Clark. Before that would have been Britney Griner mostly due to what happens in Russia not her playing. Before that not sure anyone other than maybe someone on the Olympics team I can’t even think of now.
Caitlin Clark. When I was a kid, Sheryl Swoopes.
Elena Della Donne
Sue Bird and Caitlin Clark are the only two players I could name in the history of the WNBA.
Sue Bird I think? But mostly from her endorsements. I’m not sure she even plays anymore.
I couldn’t name one
I’m old so my first thought was Lisa Leslie. But for someone more contemporary I’d say Brittany Griner.
Honestly, I only watched the first season of WNBA so I would say Lisa Leslie & Rebecca Lobo. Otherwise, I would say Brittany Griner.
These are the only 3 I can recognize.
After Caitlin Clark, it has to be the junkie trump sprung from the Russian prison.
Reading through these, it really bums me out how little is known about women’s basketball. Y’all are missing out.
Atm Caitlin for sure
Vicky Bullett 💙💛
Babe Dirikison Zaharias
Sabrina’s shoes goin crazy right now
Currently? Gotta be a tie between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, but for completely different reasons.
In past generations? Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Lisa Leslie
Cheryl Miller – ha ha ha ha 😂 😆 😄
Caitlin Clark, and it’s not even close.
(Distant) runners up:
Sue Bird
Sheryl Swoops
Lisa Leslie
Britany Griner (mostly for being caught with weed in Russia)
Angel Reese THINKS she’s the most well known, but it’s definitely Caitlin Clark
It’s Caitlin Clark and it isn’t particularly close
Caitlin Clark or Brittney griner
Close behind Angel Reese
Caitlin Clark right now
Caitlin Clark, and it’s not even close. Actually, she’s the only one I know.
Cameron Brink but because she’s hot
Pat Summit?
Has 2 college courts named after her.
Caitlin Clark. Before her I couldn’t name one female basketball player. At best I can only name one WNBA team: LA Sparks
I couldn’t name one.
No love for Dawn Staley?
I live outside america and only know of one, brittney griner because she got locked up in russia
Caitlin Clark.
Britney griner or Caitlyn Clark are the only two I can name
I cant even name one.
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese
It’s absolutely Caitlin Clark. I’ve never seen anything like that phenomenon in women’s basketball.
Caitlyn Clark is pretty much the only person that fits this description.
I’m a pretty big basketball fan, and I think she’s the only female player I can name off the top of my head.
Almost certainly Clark. But depending on where you are people might be able to name a bunch of others. (In Connecticut, for example…)
Caitlyn Clark. I wouldn’t say “household” name recognition to be honest with you but she’s the most well known. I don’t actually know anyone who follows women’s basketball aside from me in passing
Caitlin Clark and it’s not particularly close because of the run she had in college.
She became the most well-known WBB player of all time before even entering the WNBA
