I’m a left-leaning centrist, also not in or from New York, but I’ve been seeing a lot of what seems like fearmongering over Mamdani’s possible win for mayor. I don’t know his exact policy agenda, though from what I’ve seen he’s running on a populist message, ironically similar in theme to Trump’s campaign to make life more affordable for the average worker. Personally, if a candidate from either side wants to try things a new way or shake things up, I’m at least interested to see how it turns out so long as the majority of people that live there want to give it a try (vote for it). So why are conservatives that are outside the NYC mayoral influence so invested and worried about what happens in New York City?
EDIT: Reddit says I don’t have enough internet points to comment in this sub and is removing my comments so I guess I can’t ask any follow up questions from you guys. Thanks for keeping it civil anyway, would still love to hear specific policy things that worry you, but I can’t access comments to ask.

New York City is an important part of America. I don’t like it when bad things happen to important American cities. Despite what Reddit tells you, Conservatives aren’t indifferent to everything that doesn’t affect them personally.
Because it shows a Socialist trend from the Democrat side of the aisle. Socialism doesn’t bode well for Making America Great Again.
Democrats seem to think Republicans want bad things for blue cities/blue states/the country in general (take your pick, depending on the specific discussion being had; in this case, blue cities).
That is plainly untrue. I want good things for the people of New York City, and I do not think that Mamdani will bring good things for the people of New York City. He’s a wealthy guy who repeatedly failed in everything he’s attempted, only to be propped up by his ultra-wealthy parents. His politics are envy masquerading as an ideology.
I see no way this turns out well for NYC but I want what’s best for them, so I oppose his candidacy.
Because the Democrats are openly supporting a socialist for mayor – after years of arguing that they aren’t socialists. The guy uses direct quotes from Marx, and the Democratic party enthusiastically supports him for mayor of one of the largest cities in the world.
NYC is a great American city- arguably our greatest city. It has a rich history and is what many people think of when they think of America. Even though I don’t live there, as an American I have an interest in conserving that and not wanting bad things to happen to our great cities.
I’ve seen Democrats more upset about it than Republicans. The mayor of New York is a nationally prominent position. Many centrist Democrats don’t want to be associated with a nationally prominent socialist. Democrats sure haven’t given Bernie any love.
I’m a Republican from NYC and I can tell you that he is beyond the pale, even for the Democrats here. He is running on promises that he can’t keep (taxes and how he wants to use them). But beyond that, he is campaigning for things that sound good, but will be a nightmare. As an example, he wants to freeze rent. No matter if a landlord is big or small, if they can’t keep up with the cost of taxes and maintenance, they will just let the buildings fall apart, and then where will we be? He followed up by saying that he wants to seize buildings from slumlords. What constitutes a slumlord in his eyes? Who decides? What assurance would we have that this power will not be punitive? Then we get into the silly ideas, like the city-run grocery stores. Those will more likely end up more expensive than going to C-Town, and be horribly run.
As I said, even the Democrats here think he is nuts. The only reason the panic button has been hit is because instead of facing off against one candidate in November, he is running against Governor Cuomo, Mayor Adams, and Curtis Sliwa. Their base splits the vote three ways. If he was just facing off against one of these guys, you wouldn’t even know Mandami’s name.
He is a blatant Socialist – the government run grocery stores is just insane. But on the other hand, I think let him go at it, and see the effects.
Because I love NYC and can never spend enough time there, I wouldn’t mind moving there at some point too. I want the absolute best for it and to keep it affordable for residents and tourist. Having a $30 minimum wage, government ran grocery stores, and rent control does more harm than good. A 33 year old socialist is naive in thought and unqualified. I’ll take most democrats but fuck a socialist like this guy.
You are a left leaning “centrist” and asking this question? 🤣 oh man, too funny.
He has spoken about abolishing private property, increasing rent control, has said prisons serve no purpose. He wants to increase minimum wage to 30$ an hour. He wants government run grocery stores. His policies and ideas are the antithesis of the policies that conservatives promote so that’s why they don’t like him.
Because he’s a commie
