Why are there no cultural or political rebellions against Christianity?

r/

Christianity was brought to Latin America by force and was used to erase pre-Hispanic culture and practice.

And yet Latino Christians are probably some of the most fervent believers in the world.

Why is this?

Most of the world is still religious except for like Northern Europe, ex communist countries and Canada, and all of these places have well below replacement levels of producing kids so this idea of an atheist future false. Latin America isnt whats unusual, Northern Europe and North America is. Also the idea that the faith was forced on everyone is nonsense and youre showing your ideological ignorance on the subject.

After 200 years it’s just something that is there and nobody is bother by it. The closest thing to a rebellion would be in places like Uruguay were they just ignore it more and more by the day.

Because they succeeded and pre-hispanic religion was almost erradicated.

Rebellion? They stopped forcing people to be Christians a long time ago. No one is forbidding you to go and pray to an Olmec head or convert to any religion you want.

Idk man Christianity was also forced into Spain back then, why didn’t they fight it?

Within Catholic Christians there are divisions. Pope Francis is closer to left leaning positions which even connect with 70s and 80s combatant Christian positions. Former pope Benedict XVI was more “right leaning”, with more conservative positions like returning to mass in latin.

But all catholics practice sincretismo, which is the mixture of Catholic teology and local traditions. Almost all Saints and Vírgenes in LATAM are a form of old precolumbian practice but with a Christian skin over it.

Cause no one is killed, stoned to death or punished for not believing it. Everyone is open to believe or not, no one is forced. And most government are secular.

Because that process created a HUGE marjority of christians in the country, many of them often quite brainwashed. Poor or corrupt countries often keep being religious as the churches go to where to government doesn’t and continues this process of brainwashing.

The small percentage that don’t accept christianity suffer many prejudices. Here in Brazil we have some religions, for example, that are afro-brazilian and have their origin in the Yoruba people of Nigeria. Every year there is some news of some evangelical/protestant person destroing their place or worship or beaten them up.

Any country will only get rid of their main religions once the level of education increases and social inequality decreases.

if you’re asking why there weren’t rebellions back in the colonial days, that’s because in most of latin america, especially the areas with larger indigenous populations and greater preexisting religious heritage, there was a degree of syncretism between these native religions and christianity. in mexico’s case, this is especially true with catholicism there being pretty much an off branch of the main religion. the virgin guadalupe for example, was able to gain much of its popularity due to the perception of being linked to the aztec goddess tonantzin, after she supposedly appeared to juan diego (who popularized the religion among the indigenous population) in a temple for tonantzin

Why there should be? It’s 2025. Everyone is free to believe (or not) in whatever they want, no one is being forced.

Christianity remains a robust element in Latin America because, over time, it was reformed and retaken by the people it was forced upon. Rather than rejecting it completely, many people mixed Christian beliefs with Indigenous beliefs to develop a faith that was personal and representative of their culture. Rebellion and resistance happened through transformation, not outright rejection. Today, Christianity is not Christianity and is reincorporated into peoples’ day-to-day lives as spirituality. This is why there is no large rebellion because what Christianity is today is not purely what was forced.

A better way to frame this would be, why did Christianity succeed so wildly in LatAm compared to other colonized regions

It would have been better if Buddhism or Taoism were acquainted because usually they wont give a fuck how important religion generally is in the long run. I can’t bear those hypocritical judgemental Catholics
