Why aren’t pan handles welded?

r/

All the pans I’ve owned have all had the handles bolted or riveted on and it’s a pain to clean when stuff gets caught under/around them. What is stopping them from just welding the handles on instead?

Probably heat distribution. The handle will get hotter if it’s attached.

Rivets are better for the application.

Some of them are, it’s just more expensive. I have a pan where the handle is held on by four spot welds.

idk maybe so less heat convects through the metal it might jst be for no reason as well who knows

Less technical skill required for factory assembly lets companies make bigger profits. Welding and casting are technically very skilled practices, so expect to pay more for quality craftsmanship than cheaply manufactured pans.

    Do the cast iron.

Easier to produce, creates a fault point for product failure, product is more likely to be needed again.

My in laws gift us one of those cast iron ones that are 400 bucks every other year. It’s one single cast so there’s no breaking the handle without some tools. But yea they’re stupid expensive.

    Different metals

Maybe that’s a liability thing. Rivets usually fail gradually, while a weld may break suddenly and you’ll have boiling oil all over your legs.

Cast iron is great. Recently “upgraded” to a Field skillet from a Lodge I got at Walmart and it’s amazing. So much lighter! I cook with it about every day now and I love the routine of taking care of it. I told my son this morning (he was helping me cook breakfast) that the skillet would go to him when I’m dead and gone. It’s pretty cool that with proper care this thing will last centuries.

As a rule of thumb cast iron can’t be welded because it contains to much carbon.
Teflon can withstand heat up to 300°C and welding gets hot. The arc is about 3000°C

I can’t find a reason for not welding on stainless steel pan handles

I own a welder and a screwdriver. I know how to use a screwdriver. I do not know how to use a welder.
