I’ve heard the argument time and time again that to be a narcissist means you aren’t aware of being one.
I’ve always wondered if I have narcissistic tendencies but anytime I’ve discussed it with someone they always say “you arent because you wouldn’t be aware you are” which just feels like gaslighting a bit?

Because they regard themselves too highly to objectively judge their own behavior and the effect it has on others.
It may not truly be a lack of “self awareness” in a bigger sense, because most narcissists would probably admit they are, but also feel justified in feeling they are better, which makes their narcissistic behavior ok.
There’s also a difference between Narcissistic tendencies, or behavior, and genuine Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
How often do you look at yourself in the mirror a day?
Same reason blind people can’t see. That’s the nature of the disorder.
