Why can’t congress fix fraud, corruption and the size of the government itself?

r/

I’m not an American, so I don’t know a lot about this. But from the outside, it seems that congress is responsible for allocating funds. When Republicans have both congress and president, why does the president need to create DOGE to reduce the size of government? It looks like the congress is supporting it, but unable to do it itself? Is that right?

The president is the head of the executive department. Trump is mainly trying to reduce the size of the things run out of the executive department, while we have rogue judges saying that the heads of those departments or even the president himself should not have access to the data or ability to fire employees. That’s another problem that needs to be fixed. There should be punishments for judges that don’t follow the law and just rule the way they feel like.

Politics. Both parties have had decades to fix this, and didn’t even try.

I don’t agree with all of what DJT is doing, but some of it is good.

There is a natural dichotomy between the Republicans and Democrats. Democrats want bigger government and Republicans want smaller government. Since WW2 Democrats have been in charge of Congress more often than Republicans and the result is that government has grown and spending has grown. When anyone talks about "cutting" spending the long knives come out from all sides to protect their particular piece of the pie. It is much easier to grow spending than cut it.

Any effort to "cut" spending requires at least 60 votes so you have to build a consensus around any effort to reduce spending.

My experience is that an external audit of a enterprise is ALWAYS a fruitful effort.

Private industry is required by law to do so and in IMHO government should be held to the same standard.

The short answer is that if they could have done it they would have done it and you do t the the fox guard the hen house.

Politicians aren’t incentivized to care because voters won’t vote them out for failing to reduce the size or level of corruption of government.

It’s really that simple: voters just don’t care enough about these issues to actually prioritize them at the ballot box.

    Congress can fix those things.

But can you fix your own congressman?

Most people can’t even name their own congressman let alone tell you how they voted on the last spending authorization. Most people are too busy paying attention to what the president ate for breakfast. We’re being distracted by all the wrong things.
