Billionaires ain’t heroes. Bezos caved in order to gain favor and avoid vindictive retaliation.

  2. anactualspacecadet Avatar

    When did they do that?

  3. Pesec1 Avatar

Because Trump made it very clear that he could inflict a lot of financial damage upon Amazon. Trump is also very clear that he doesn’t fear consequences. By contrast, Bezos does.

Bezos is not going to throw away his wealth for idealism.

  4. Impressive-Tip-1689 Avatar

    Did they change their mind?

“The company said its smaller Haul division, which competes for low-cost buyers with Temu and Shein, had mulled displaying import levies. “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and (is) not going to happen,” a company spokesperson said, adding that “teams discuss ideas all the time.””

  5. Renmauzuo Avatar

It sounds like they didn’t change their mind so much as float an idea and decide not to go with it.

  6. Dragontastic22 Avatar

Because Trump is like a middle school mean girl who loves vendettas and enemies.  Amazon didn’t want to be (more) subject to his rage.

  7. ennsea Avatar

Bezos has proved time and time again that he’s a gutless pussy. He was behind The Washington Post not backing Kamala. He chose to fund Trump’s inauguration and attend it. Here again he backs down.

  8. Azdak66 Avatar

Bezos seems to have adopted a strategy of protecting his business by avoiding direct conflicts with Trump. Maybe he thinks he is playing the “long game”by just outlasting him for four years.

It makes him look like a spineless trump taint sniffer, but he doesn’t seem to think that will cause him long-term harm.

Maybe he is correct, in terms of his businesses. But history has shown that you can never get rid of trump stank once you get it on you and that once you cave, trump will keep going after you and demanding more and more obeisance.

  9. External-Cap-5905 Avatar

Not sure I understand the WH press sec. How is displaying the cost a political hit job?

If tariffs are paid by the other country, the amount would be $0.00.
Since they know it is NOT paid by the importer or country of origin, they don’t want it displayed. The fact that the WH went in overdrive and that Orange Jesus called Bozo, shows you they are not truthful.

Why would you care if some business displays the cost if it doesn’t affect you?

  11. johnnyhandbags Avatar

To send a message to every other retailer who might have the same idea. Amazon probably colluded with the Trump admin to act out this farce.

  39. dibidi Avatar

it’s a common business tactic to obfuscate the factors causing price increases so that the merchant can raise the price beyond what would have been the result of those factors without the consumers realizing. that way they can increase their profit margin at the expense of the consumers and just blame the price increasing factor as the “only” cause. With no price transparency, consumers can’t really say for sure.

  40. acemccrank Avatar

The official response is that Amazon Haul in specific had it as a suggestion within a small team, and the suggestion was dismissed.

  46. gatogetaway Avatar

If you really want Americans to buy American, slap a tariff markup and create a filter for “tariff free”. Browbeating Amazon into removing this information is exactly the opposite of what you want to do.

  47. VoiceGuyNextDoor Avatar

This might have been a hell of a play by Bezos. He needs China.

What did he get in return to put the genie back in the bottle for Trump?

The “It’s un-American to show these price increases” is just more of the same B.S.

I think Bezos played it very well for his interests.

  48. Various_Patient6583 Avatar

From what I gather a few things happened:

    1. Bezos is not in charge of Amazon. Though he remains a major shareholder.

    2. The decision, meant to impact a small section of the Amazon empire, was not final.

It seems that it blew up and folks got scared. It was just another PR hit and corporations are protective of their reputation.

  49. NutzNBoltz369 Avatar

It was more of a “We are thinking about maybe doing this” than “We are doing this”.

Trump should have held off the case of vaginitus until the tariff charges being displayed was actually live.

Pay more attention to what people actually do than say they might do.

  50. North_Vermicelli_877 Avatar

What did they call it? Tariff import fee?

Should just call it federal sales tax as line after state tax. We accept state sales taxes and we accept federal and state income taxes. This would be the right terminology.

  51. harbengerprime Avatar

Because Bezos doesn’t have a spine

  52. Dave_A480 Avatar

    Who said they did…..

Trump doesn’t even know the right guy to call and whine at – Bezos isn’t in charge at Amazon anymore and hasn’t been for years…. Andy Jassey runs Amazon now.

More likely the news story was a leak of a lower level discussion that wasn’t approved yet…. And it was reported before the higher ups actually made a decision….

That said it would be an excellent move to break out tariff cost under normal circumstances….

The fact that these aren’t normal circumstances & the Trump people are fine with faking charges against anyone who resists…..

  53. hotdog31 Avatar

    You know why.

  54. fuckmarjorietgreene Avatar

It’s unbelievable to me how Bezos is such a kiss-ass. Literally the last thing I would ever do if I had fuck you money, let alone a fortune bigger than most nations, is kiss anyone’s ass. Especially the world’s biggest douchebag’s ass.

  57. Fall_of_the_Empire25 Avatar

Because Trump probably demanded that they not do it. It would make Trump look bad.

  58. TheRealTinfoil666 Avatar

Gee, now he gets to hide any price hikes he likes and blame tariffs.

I mean he ‘tried’ to make it clear and simple, but the bad man is making him hide all of his costs and profits.

I am sure that any and all prices will only climb just enough to cover tariffs, and will come right back down if tariffs are reduced or removed.

Why would Mr Bezos do anything else?

  59. neophanweb Avatar

If they display the exact amount of tariffs added, sellers can’t price gouge. People would be able to do the math and see if the tariffs are correct. If they don’t display it, even if tariffs were $5 more, sellers could add $10 on top of it and blame it all on tariffs.

  60. galaxyapp Avatar

I’m going to also speculate that this would be an absolutely enormous effort for Amazon to implement.

And I’m guessing this would be a field entered by merchants? Which probably wouldn’t participate, if they could even easily quantify it.

  61. deviltrombone Avatar

Such perverse irony that orange thing, that only ever ran the shitty business left to it by its sire, that would have been laughed out of any real company within five minutes for being a criminal, idiotic, incompetent freak, now has legitimately successful leaders bowing to its every whim. It told its Republican horde “it would be their retribution”, and what it meant was, “revenge of the losers”, which in still more perverse irony, will destroy those losers and take the country down with them. Republicans are the Japanese at the end of WWII, and like Truman said, they won’t quit until they’re made to eat stones. Also, “When you have to deal with a beast, you have to treat him as a beast.”

Republicans brought us to this. Again. Never forget. Never forgive.

    No. More. Republicans. Ever.

I don’t like defending greedy corps like Amazon. But the tariff calculation thing wasn’t planned for all of Amazon, it was just initially to be added to the Amazon Hauls site as a test for transparency issues. But the us government made it clear they would put pressure on the company if they continued being transparent to their customers.

It’s just shitty. Everyone in it is greedy and shitty. Doesn’t matter how u slice it.

  77. naraic- Avatar

Honest reason why Amazon won’t display tariff cost.

They can’t do it honestly without revealing information they dont want to reveal.

If the tariff is 50% on the cost price that Amazon is paying to import the product. Not on the price Amazon sells for.

If Amazon buys for 100 in China then the tariff is 50. Amazon can’t take their selling price of 250 and reveal tariffs of 50 without telling people that the cost price is 100 and the tariff is 50. Everyone will know that Amazon profit (gross profit is 100) even if Amazon has another bunch of expenses they have to pay out of that 100.

In short revealing tariffs reveals the cost price and makes it look like Amazon is booking large profits.

Amazon profited wanted to say our selling price is 250 the tariff is 50% therefore the tariff is 125 and then blame Trump for 125 of the cost. That’s a pure lie.

  78. AgeofVictoriaPodcast Avatar

Why wouldn’t they? They are only interested in profit. They are a big business working in an emerging theocratic dictatorship. Bezos could end up ruined or in prison, same as anyone the regime perceives as an enemy. If the regime wants it can bring laws targeting Amazon and crushing them.

Americans need to realise that the revolution/coup has already happened. They live in a dictatorship which keeps the outward theatre of democracy. Any powerful entity now has to conform to the will of the Dictatorship.

  83. bomber991 Avatar

My hunch is that it takes extra effort to display the tariff cost and opens them up to be sued by any one of the 50 states for violating some law that may or may not exist.

So basically, nothing to gain and everything to lose.

  84. LumberingOaf Avatar

Probably because they already got what they wanted and could get a little more by giving the administration a small symbolic victory.

Think about it, what does Amazon achieve by displaying the tariff cost in the price of products? What did they achieve by saying they’d display the tariff cost in the price of products?

  91. dannynotok Avatar

It’s worth noting this wasn’t going to be Amazon writ-large. Rather the new, smaller “Amazon Haul” had considered it, but didn’t implement.

That being said, any kind of “yes sir no sir” from Bezos to Trump is both gross and predictable.

But, there was no plan for all products on the site to show this.

SOURCE: Amazon is not planning to break out tariff costs online as White House attacks potential move

  92. ScramJetMacky Avatar

It was a pre-planned maneuver by the Trump administration to use the Amazon company as an example to stop other companies from displaying the tariff increases. The Trump administration wants to shift the blame of price increases onto the companies themselves and away from him.

Jeff Bezos is on Trump’s side, he was literally standing behind Trump at the inauguration along with the other Tech-bros.

They are hiding what they are doing from the American people. Remember Trump said that the tariffs would be paid by those wanting to do business in America not by the American people themselves, which was and is a complete fabrication of truth.

  93. AboutToMakeMillions Avatar

    Amazon didn’t cave.

Bezos wanted to send a message to Trump to put pressure on him and/or extract some other concession (e.g Pentagon or NASA contracts for his space venture).

What happened is Amazon leaked into the press that they were planning on doing this, trump panicked and instantly called him – as the media reported – and after whatever deal was struck Bezos said “oh we never actually planned on doing that, please ignore”

Trump got bruised because it revealed how weak he is to Bezos, and Bezos made his point on how easily he can hurt his approval ratings.

It’s all politics. Fools will think “Bezos caved” and all that garbage but the reality is very different. This was just a warning shot to put pressure on trump to change tactics or give some other reward.
