Pro rock singer here. Singing, especially hard/gritty singing and/or screaming, takes a shit ton of muscle control. If I’m singing without a guitar on, my whole body instinctively moves all over the place as I sing; my arms swing, hands clench, bend over, grab chest, etc. I’m normally totally unaware that I’m doing it until I see video later.

My thought is that singing in front of a large group of people is one of the most vulnerable things we can do. It’s almost as if singers are standing there completely naked, as they’re revealing so much of themselves to the audience. Thus holding the crotch is a form of covering up that vulnerability, adding back a layer of protection between them and the audience.
