Why do barstaff always look at me weird when I ask for a double rum and orange?

r/

Rum and pineapple is a common drink. Whenever I ask for a double rum (Morgan’s spiced) with orange juice, why does every barstaff look at me like I’ve just ordered a horses head? It isn’t that weird, right?

Maybe you should finish out with the “juice” part. Maybe theyre like “orange what?”

  2. BlondieVibesX Avatar

Mate, they look weird cause orange + rum is not a “classic mix”. Most bars are just use to da basic stuff: rum + coke, rum + pineapple. U ask 4 orange and they brain go ??? lol

  3. sassy_tabaxi Avatar

well, someone might actually come along and order a horse’s head before this drink…………

  4. gpbst3 Avatar

Maybe it’s the dark rum part. Most juices are mixed with white.

Anyways who cares what anyone thinks about your drink combo.

  5. Martino231 Avatar

Probably just because it’s an unusual choice of mixer for rum. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s unusual, so they’re probably just a bit surprised and maybe wanting to check that they heard you right.

  6. DJNimbus2000 Avatar

It’s a weird order, that’s why. Spiced rum and OJ sure is a choice, and to me personally (as an ex-bartender to boot) the flavors do not go together. If you like it, keep ordering it, but know that some bartenders will have a reaction.

My “weird” order is whiskey and root beer, and I will withstand the weird reactions for all of time because it tastes fantastic.

  7. SmoothFee9938 Avatar

Ngl that actually sounds kinda good. Im not really a dark liquor drinker, but I imagine it would be along the lines of a where a spiced orange tea would be, but with more burn.

  8. HardestButt0n Avatar

It is an unusual combo but I do have it at home once in a blue moon if I’m overdue for a liquor store run. I do think that white rum and OJ tastes better though.

  9. NativeMasshole Avatar

Try it with Pyrat rum. It’s more of a South American style with an orange citrus flavor to it that I feel like would work much better.

  10. Cara_Bina Avatar

I was a bartender for almost 20 years. I’ve heard of “gin and juice,” “Port wine and juice,” vodka and orange juice, but never once did someone call for rum and orange. Please note that the first two were referring to orange juice.

I actually tried the Port wine and o.j. once. It was like a poor man’s Sangria. The very idea had given me the horrors, and visually adding a burgundy colour to orange was a bit much, but it wasn’t half bad. You may want to try a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, just for fun.

“Why do people look at me weird when I ask for weird stuff”

  12. FanSerious7672 Avatar

Likely just uncommon. I’ll ask for a sidecar sometimes (a classic!) and they all look at me like I have 4 heads or ask if it’s some craft beer, unless it’s a pretty nice place

  13. DarthJarJar242 Avatar

It’s pretty weird. They are looking at you like that because it’s probably the first time it’s been ordered for them.

  14. multiplebaskets Avatar

You are just 2 juices short of a rum and POG, so I don’t think it is that crazy of a combo. If the bar has POG you should try it with that, but not every bar has POG. Rum and POG can be made with whatever type of rum you want, so don’t let people make you feel bad about liking something.

  15. Jewish-Mom-123 Avatar

Because it’s a weird order. Plain rum and any sort of fruit juice or punch is a more normal thing. But spiced rum is weird with orange juice.

  16. PublicFishing3199 Avatar

I had a period in my life where I enjoyed a tequila sunrise, but I would use rum instead of tequila. I called it a Caribbean sunrise. But generally I did not use spiced rum.

  17. lateralflinch53 Avatar

I’m more of a tequila and milk kinda guy

  18. gnome_ole Avatar

A local legend here used to drink Captains with OJ and soda. Delicious!

  19. Milamber310 Avatar

OP, lotta people calling your drink of choice weird, but I’m thinking it’s a regional thing.

This summer job I had during college I worked with an older security guard originally from Louisiana. He told me his favorite cocktail was Myers Rum with Orange Juice and brown sugar. Probably one of the first cocktails I ever tried to make before at home.

  20. emryldmyst Avatar

    Hmm.

I order Captain Morgan with equal parts of and pineapple.
    Super yummy

  21. TheLazyHippy Avatar

I get quite the head turner whenever I order a shot of 1 part jager 1 part fireball

  22. Linguistin229 Avatar

A Malibu (which is rum) and orange is very popular. You could maybe just ask for that?

  23. wibbly-water Avatar

And I thought reactions to my Kaluah and coke (or Tia Maria) were odd…

  24. yay-its-colin Avatar

Captain Morgan and a fizzy orange drink (like club orange) is tasty

  25. Bangbashbonk Avatar

Ask for a joker and they’d be fine – that’s fanta and rum but yeah I’d double check I heard you right for double rum and orange.

  26. cbenti60 Avatar

Switch to Myers with OJ (and a splash of pineapple). Trust me

  27. jimmythang34 Avatar

There are tons of good liquor and mixer/juice combo’s a any bar could whip up on the spot. This isn’t one of them.

Also, a double isn’t gonna get you anywhere near a decent ratio. It’s just a bad drink to be honest lol

  28. kytheon Avatar

It’s a weird order. They have a list of cocktails. You want something custom.

  29. nothanksiliketowatch Avatar

I have a relative who exclusively drinks Captain and OJ. He gets dirty looks everywhere especially from us.

  30. chippy-alley Avatar

Years of bar work. Never had anybody ask for just rum with orange juice.

Rum & juice plus other ingredients yes.

Generally people like mixes that are a nice colour, as well as a nice taste

  31. MrFruffles Avatar

I did not know that would be a strange order….i think it’s delicious.

I like gin and cranberry I get weird looks for that and it’s nice as

  34. Chesu Avatar

    I mean, it’s a spiced rum screwdriver… it’s not something most bartenders would’ve heard of before 😂

  35. PabloM0ntana Avatar

Oh I don’t know, maybe they look at you that way cause who the fuck orders a double rum with orange juice.

  36. Enaksan Avatar

I mean, maybe it’s the old bar worker in me but I just looked at my phone as I read that exactly how I imagine they look at you 😂

  37. _windfish_ Avatar

    Two reasons.

It comes off as an amateur/inexperienced order – most young people’s first “cocktail” is either rum+coke or vodka+orange, so it looks like you’re mixing them up and confused about what you’re ordering.

And it’s simultaneously a weird, kinda gross drink that few people with more experience would likely enjoy. Again leading them to think you’re confused about what you want.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t keep ordering it if it’s really what you like – just continue to expect weird looks and requests for clarification.

  38. Fat_Bearded_Tax_Man Avatar

My son (22) orders Dry Gin Neat and gets tons of looks and comments for it. He looks 50 (full horseshoe hairline) so its not that he looks too young for it.

  39. PansophicNostradamus Avatar

Next time: ask the tender what the look was for.

  40. Hxcmetal724 Avatar

Spiced rum + sprite = cream soda

I get weird looks for that too

  41. ISuckAtFallout4 Avatar

Because I bartended for years and never had anyone come even remotely close to ordering something like that.

  42. Pizzagoessplat Avatar

I don’t now ive had a lot weirder.

I once had an American who asked me for rum, lime and tea?

I told him that I’ve no problems brewing a pot for him if he could wait a couple of minutes, but then he changed his mind

  43. QuerulousPanda Avatar

To be honest I feel like a big part of the problem is your attitude/perception. It sounds like you’re ordering it knowing that it’s an odd choice and you’re playing into the weirdness and then getting mad about it.

Like, I really doubt they’re looking at you in a negative way. Maybe they’re surprised or confused but you already know that’s what they’re going to feel, so you should be expecting it.

If you’re that worried about it, either order something different, choose to enjoy the reactions and have fun seeing the different varieties you get, or, head it off at the pass and begin the order by saying “hey I know it’s a weird one but trust me in if, can I get a rum and orange” and then if they’re like “really?” you can have fun with it. Make up a story like “yeah this crazy chick introduced me to it and it reminds me of her” or something. Make it into an amusing situation.

You know the thing you’re ordering is weird, so you can choose to either be defensive and uncomfortable about it, or just own it and have fun with it.

  44. Mischief_Makers Avatar

99% of the time as soon as someone mentions the spirit you either know what the mixer is, or what two things it may be. Someone says the word “gin” and you already know it’s gonna be ‘and tonic’ or ‘and lemonade’. Spiced rum is almost ALWAYS going to be coke. When you hear the same thing around 100 times a week and suddenly something changes, it surprises you.

If you commute to work, imagine if one day, out of nowhere, the little voice over on the train or bus mispronounced the name of one stop. You’d notice that, right? Same thing for us with an unusual drinks order.

A few weeks ago, someone asked me for a disaronno and apple juice, and without thinking I replied “you mean disaronno cranberry, right?”.

It’s a repetitive job. Anything out of the norm stands out.

  45. Background-Host-7922 Avatar

Apparently cognac and coca cola is a popular cocktail in Detroit, MI, EEUU. They call it “Cokes ‘n Yacs”. Second hand, me to you.

  49. Hey-Just-Saying Avatar

Rabbit trail maybe, but since we are on the topic. I get weird looks when I order an old-fashioned and ask for a few cherries thrown in. (At home, I muddle the orange slice and the cherries or add a spoonful of cherry juice.) I like the combo of the bitters, orange, and the cherries. Is there a drink that incorporates both? Like an Old-fashioned Manhattan combo?

  50. Sugah-mama21 Avatar

    Yes, it is extremely weird.

  51. wonderfulquery Avatar

Orange and cinnamon is a common baking pair so I wonder why everyone is acting like you’re crazy for pairing them as a drink. To me it sounds like a good winter time drink, like a spiced cider.
