Many many years ago there was that viral video of Pakistani children in a school and they all wanted to grow up nuking India. It’s where the famous “I LOVE PAKISTAN” meme came from.
I really just want to know why the hell they want to annihilate each other.

Muslim vs Hindu is what it boils down to
Real answer – Pervasive Hindu v Muslim tensions

Religion is a hell of a drug.
This video explains everything you need to know about the two countries

Religion, as always. Humans are insane thinking an non existent “deity” cares. You think of their deities were powerful they would smite those who were not of that religion? Right? Come on Allah get to work on smiting those infidels? Oh you cannot? Another impotent god
Kashmir region is 50/50 shared between both countries, and they both want 100%
Religion is the cause of many wars.
Partition, killed and displaced people and the Pakistani elite really wanted it. The issue in Kashmir which is why we keep going to war or having skirmishes. India accuses Pakistan of training Lakshar e Taiba and Jaish e Mohammad. Pakistan denies it but wikileaks and David Headly says otherwise. Pakistan is an Islamic state where the military runs things, India is a secular country with a right wing Hindu nationalist government.
1000 years of Muslim conquests into India over the majority Hindus being persecuted up to the fall of the Mughal Empire. When the British Raj took control, Hindus never forgave the Muslims, and both parties stoked the flames against each other and calling for separate nations up to partition. Once partition happened then a thousand plus years of religious tension boiled over as they forced each other into their respective new nations, and have hated each other ever since.
Old religious fueds coupled with a really messy breakup during their independence in 1948
I forgot about that video, after every kid that wants to nuke India the teacher shouts ‘GRAPE’
Post-colonial Elites are gonna Elite. Nothing to do with Durand, or Sykes, or Picot, or Mountbatten or Atlee. First to the armoury wins.
When India got Independence from the British, people wanted for a separate Islamic country for Muslims who didn’t want to stay in a Hindhu Majority country, so Pakistan was created. But the thing which got heated is about the Kashmir region. Half of Kashmir falls in India and the other half in Pakistan. Both the extremist groups wants to claim full authority of the Kashmir. This is the main reason for the hatred even after the Independence. Pakistan has made a few terrorist attacks throughout the years, even including Mumbai which is far away from the border
Pakistan is a country that was essentially created to separate muslims from hindus and sikhs in what was once Brittish controlled India. This partition and the founding of the two nations was basically overseen and carried out by Britain. People need to have an identity to cling on and a history to call upon. As a new nation Pakistan had little going for it historically and culturally that wasn’t already shared with India, since they were all part of the same region with a common history. So in some attempt to differentiate themselves Pakistani nationalism largely developed around the idea that they’re not Indians. Conversely on the other side Indians felt that the land was stolen from them in a sense and that their country was split in favor of people they didn’t like, ie people of a different faith. This followed simillar movements across the world including Europe where each country was getting creative as far as its history went because cultivating nationalism was very popular up until the second world war.
Partition was not a clean split. The region of Punjab was cut in half. Muslims sent to the Pakistan side, Hindus and Sikh to the Indian side. My grandparents were forced to leave their homes and all belongings in India and move to Pakistan. My great grandfather was murdered in the process. Personally I don’t have anything against Indian people. I also have Indian friends. But I was born and raised in America.
is reddit really the right place?
Ghandi, it’s a good movie, tells u all about it
Why are people saying religion, when India is home to one of the biggest Muslim populations on Earth?
Religion plays a role and early history too but these days it comes down to ownership of Kashmir province and the insurgency there. They already fought a couple of wars over it and both sides has had multiple terrorist attacks. Kind of the British fault for unifying all of India as it wasn’t ever unified as one singular state before that. Muslims and Hindus actually lived in Harmony before the colonization. They did fight wars but not so much due to religion but just due to ancient expansion and resources.
I’m not denying religion plays a significant role in the tension between India and Pakistan, but my question is why doesn’t India have the same tension with Bangladesh? Bangladesh is predominantly Muslim too.
I visted a school in rural Kashmir. They were taugfht that the himmalyas protects india from attack from Pakistan. It is true. Whichever country controls the high places controls the border. Cant invade by land over a mountain range.
As a pakistani I feel like a lot of answers here are simplifying the relationship too much. Saying religion is the only reason is kinda a cop out imho
TLDR; A cup full of politicians villifying the other country for elections, a dash of war and continued border disputes until today, and a sprinkle of religious dispute to top it all off causes tensions
(P.S I would like to add that despite online sentiment the vast majority of Indians I’ve met in real life are extremely kind and hospitable people and I am friends with many of them. At the end of the day both our countries are screwed and we make fun of both sides all the time. Genuinely the internet does not reflect real life at all)
Islam is a violent mindset.. almost all conflicts in the last 30 years have flowed from that source.
Radcliffe Line : Post world war 2 colonial British was the problem. partition of India in 1947, Britain drew a line and a said “ you figure it out, peace out”. Hindus and muslims where on both sides and people wanted to be on the correct side. Led to chaos. There is a pattern of the Brits carving up the country geographically and not taking culture into account.
It all boils down to the partition. The Muslims of India were adamant of creating a separate nation as they did not want to stay in a Hindu majority country. The relationship of both countries remained quite tense, they even fought four major wars in which India won all of them. Pakistan became a Punjabi-sunni extremist ethnostate where everyone who doesn’t fit that category essentially live as second class citizens. It is not as simple as Muslims hating Hindus as the Pakistanis don’t like the Indian Muslims as well. Interesting fact, Pakistan killed more Muslims than India ever did and probably ever could when they orchestrated the Bangladeshi genocide.
This comment section ought to be calm and reasonable. /s
It’s not as simple as just Hindu vs Muslim.
Pakistan has been a menace in the region since the partition in 1947. Pakistan has a lot of blood on its hands, with decades of
horrific state sponsored terrorist attacks
Repeated baseless claims about Kashmir being Pakistani territory
Fighting a proxy war by stirring unrest, insurgency, and radicalising locals of Kashmir
instigating the genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. Its support for militant groups, through training, funding, and strategic direction, fueled the violence that led to this ethnic cleansing.
Instigating 4 wars (1947-48, 1965, 1971, and 1999)
Even now, the Pakistani government has increased security cover for one of the most wanted terrorists while its citizens are out on the streets due to shortage of water caused by the diplomatic retaliation by India to the latest terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
Not too difficult to guess the reason behind the hostilities, is it?
Pakistani here.
Many people are pointing out to Partition, which is correct but it goes a bit deeper.
During the Cold War, the CIA funded the Pakistani military to be a safeguard against India. The Pakistani military overtook the civilian government again and again through numerous coups, and democratic backsliding kept happening. During the 70s, the Pakistani military tried to ethnically cleanse Bangladeshis which ultimately failed. All of which Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger knew about and even actively funded it. The Pakistani military has an overwhelming chokehold on civilian politics ever since the 70s.
Not to mention, Pakistan was involved with funding and training terrorist cells within India during the Cold War and supported Sikh sepratism in ‘Operation Bleed India.’ The terrorist cells and Operation Bleed India has been discontinued ever since.
In India, Hindu nationalism has risen. Much of it being disinformation and poor historical education. Modi’s rise has also seen a democratic backsliding – he’s a strongman that got popular through populist waves. Radicalism is taking root against Muslims (who are a minority in India) and in the average Hindu’s eyes, Pakistan = Islam (which is not necessarily true). Hindu nationalism is there because of wealth inequality and poor education.
A lot of the war standoffs are just posturing generally to rally support over the civilians. The Pakistani military is certaintly gaining some good points in civilian books. India is getting good points because they’re trying to act tough.
Within Kashmir, there are many insurgent groups and terrorist cells that formed as a result of earlier Pakistani support and mistreatment by the Indian government.
Pakistan does not have the resources to train and support the terrorist cells in India currently. We’re currently self-cannibalising – it’s a struggle between the military, particularly insurgent groups within Pakistan and civilians. It’s messy and it’s super complicated. Pakistan should not have been able to operate the way it has over the years. But we somehow pulled it off.
India does not actively want to pursue war. They have far too many commerical interests within their country to lose. War basically degrades a country’s credit rating, which is not what India wants. But Modi’s being compelled to posture thanks to his cabinet of lunatic warhawks.
Pakistan benefitted from war against India thanks to the US funding them. And if you look anywhere, the US supported despots in the hope of quelling USSR support. Not necessarily because of religion solely.
It’s complicated, and it’s messy. The ‘religion bad’ crowd needs to do a deeper dive because honestly, blaming religion just shows a lack of critical thinking skills and research skills as well. History is confusing, complex and messy. Religion is used as a tool, not necessarily the sole reason behind wars and all.
The people saying religion are wrong. The nations were divided in two on the basis of religion yes, but only at the behest of one party – the Muslim League. India was never meant to be a nation along religious lines, while the only factor keeping Pakistan together was their religion.
The current reason for the rising tensions is Kashmir – and Pakistan’s constant support of separatism in Kashmir. The Kashmir issue is vital for ruling establishments in both nations – in Pakistan the Army uses it to keep enjoying its predominance and power and privileges, while in India Kashmir can at times be used to cover up other news which the ruling establishment might not want to see the light of day.
About Kashmir
When India got independent, India was carved into Bangladesh (east pakistan at that time), Pakistan and India. The latter being the only hindu nation. Kashmir like other many states was not a part of the two. Sardar Vallabhai Patel made the others join but not Kashmir. Since both countries wanted it, they tried to persuade the ruler of Kashmir in their own way. Pakistan sent it’s army who started pillaging, killing and raping it’s way to entire kashmir. The ruler asked India for help and accepted the condition that entire Kashmir be handed over to India. Indian army beat pak army and stopped them which is today’s LOC and the area which pak took is PoK. Now pakistan wants all and they send terrorists to destabilise india such as 26/11 and pahalgam.
To add, Kashmir was a majority hindu state. Kashmiri hindus were forced out as you can read kashmiri hindu exodus where one story about a hindu girl goes that she was raped by 4 of her muslim neighbours whom she considered brothers and they later cut her in half while she was alive. We also have instances of love jihad in india where muslims entrap sikh and hindu women and convert them by any means necessary.
Muslims in middle east area call about ghazwa e hind meaning to convert entire India to muslims by any means necessary since India is the only religion in south asia not fallen to Islam completely. You can see Malaysia and other countries all majority muslims. So they try to do it every now and then with pakistan sending terrorists or inciting indian muslims to do it’s dirty work. Kashmir is an excuse, they just want to annex and convert whole India.
Well, one nation was created on the very basis of religious hatred. Literally for no other reason. So why would there be love.
When India was partitioned, ALOT of people got displaced, killed. Some numbers say over 2 million people died. Its not only about religion, but land and also this immutable history of absurd bloodshed
Everybody saying it’s a religion thing – yes there is hate between Hindu and Muslim people but the India – Pakistan tale is not Hindu-Muslim.
It is more rooted in geopolitics rather than simple religious hate for the other group.
Fact: Pakistan has 240 million or so people, and 98-99% are Muslims. India has 200M+ Muslims, and unlike Pakistan, it has a far far wider variety of Islamic sects.
Pakistan realized that it couldn’t match India, tank for tank, bomb for bomb and since the Kargil war has pursued a policy of introducing terrorists into India through the shared border or via the sea, destabilizing Kashmir, and terrorists carrying out attacks everywhere. In the past, killing was as long as they’re Indians kill them. This is the first time, a check was done for being Muslims or not.
Pakistan stole all the raw materials to make toilets in 1947.
I think territory too, lots of Sikhs were dispelled from there native lands in Pakistan and forced to move to Punjab, also Hindus in that region and vice versa for Muslims
Religious differences
Religion ruins all.
They’re both Leos, which can be a contentious pairing¹

Indians are not fond of Pakistan because they are baying for our blood. I guess you can’t blame us for that. Just go and check how many terrorist activities has Pak carried out against India in the last 75 years.
And I am sure 99% Pakistani folks want to live in peace but the rest 1% just wants to blow up the entire world. And with 99% not able to rein in the 1%, the tensions will never subside.
Religion, history
Also they both claim Kashmir
Britain is the real reason. Partition fucked up the entire socio-economic and political climate in the region, the same way the partition of Ireland did, the same way the founding of Israel did. It’s always goes back to the Brits in the end.
Yeah, there were tensions in place due to religion divisions, but that act exacerbated them exponentially.
Colonialism. Until 1947, the entire region was a colony of the British Empire. On their way out the door, they partitioned what was India into India and Pakistan, in typically haphazard and sloppy fashion.
One side keeps fuckn their goats 🐐
Indian here. We don’t hate each other. We tried to live in peace but they don’t want to see peace. We made efforts for peace but all of them went to gutter.
1999 – Kargil Conflict (after Lahore Declaration)
Peace effort:
In February 1999, Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee signed the Lahore Declaration with Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif, promoting peace and nuclear restraint.
Attack/Conflict:
Just 3 months later in May 1999, Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated Kargil, leading to the Kargil War.
2001 – Indian Parliament Attack
Peace effort:
Mid-2001, PM Vajpayee attended the Agra Summit with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to restart peace talks (though it failed).
Attack:
On December 13, 2001, terrorists attacked the Indian Parliament, killing several security personnel.
Impact:
India blamed Pakistan-based groups (Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba) and mobilized the army along the border (Operation Parakram).
2008 – Mumbai Terror Attacks
Peace effort:
2004-2008, under PM Manmohan Singh, India and Pakistan engaged in Composite Dialogue Process — with major progress in trade and people-to-people ties.
Attack:
On November 26, 2008, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks killed 175+ people.
Impact:
Directly traced to Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba; peace talks broke down for years.
2016 – Pathankot Attack
Peace effort:
December 25, 2015, PM Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Lahore to meet Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif — a strong symbolic peace move.
Attack:
On January 2, 2016, just a week later, terrorists attacked the Pathankot Airbase in Punjab.
Impact:
The attack was blamed on Jaish-e-Mohammed; peace dialogue halted again.
2016 – Uri Attack
Peace effort:
Early 2016, there were quiet attempts to revive the stalled dialogue after Pathankot (including NSA-level talks).
Attack:
On September 18, 2016, 19 Indian soldiers were killed in an attack on an army base in Uri, Jammu & Kashmir.
Impact:
India launched “surgical strikes” across the Line of Control. Dialogue collapsed.
Religion is the main cause of conflict and destruction in the Middle East and beyond to the east or west.
Religion man, it’s always religion
Propaganda. I think the on the Pakistani side it’s a lot less because much less consumers of media and tends to be around wartime that people are riled. Pakistan also geographically is agricultural and in that area poorer historically so they are used to it
On the Indian side I have noticed it’s because of economic dissatisfaction. India is and is presented as a superpower but there’s not enough jobs for grads. They also have overnight urbanisation sending people to cities. There’s a lot of pressure. Like most countries the poorest get handouts and in India govts jobs too(which causes middle classes to not be happy). There is a general unhappiness amongst a certain class which gets deflected to Pakistan and random Mughal figures. The truth is Indian govt is failing on the economy front and the current govt is obsessed with culture wars(very happy to deal with Muslims privately for dollars). They have messed up many things due to ideology and doing things which have nothing to do with economy or healthcare.
Also another factor is Pakistanis have been running abroad for decades. The lower class hindus have less experience with this and less foreign remittances so that drives unhappiness too. Generally on a basic level they are similar though
As for Kashmir ofc it is a resource issue on both sides. and Kashmiris are stuck in the middle. The army like every country commit horrors(the civilian populations at home never understand) and think it is “jihad”. and ofc the British hid their atrocities too and made propaganda against natives
Religion?
Read up on India’s fight for Home Rule, and the Partion of India.
The origins of India-Pakistan tensions can be traced to British imperialism and their use of identity politics. Hindus and Muslims lived in relative peace for 150 years under the Sikh Empire, led by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Then, the British arrived and divided the region using identity politics based on religion. In 1947, they hastily left and carved up Punjab—the heartland of the Sikh Empire—splitting it into two parts: approximately 3/4 went to Muslims and 1/4 to Hindus.
During this partition, people frantically tried to move to their designated regions, resulting in massive communal violence. Around 2 million people died in riots and mass killings. Since then, relations between India and Pakistan have continuously deteriorated, with ongoing political, religious, and territorial tensions.
British colonial “divide and conquer” politics
Partition
Politicians playing on the tensions to build support and popularity
British diplomatic masterpiece
Islam considers non-Muslims to be infidels (kafirs) with Quranic sanction to rid places inhabited by them and forcibly convert the ones who remain.
Pakistanis are largely descendants of victims of these violent conversions and Islamism has meant that they adopt the same stance as their vanquishers and perpetuate the dynamic. This image has continued onto the average Pakistani today.
The Hindu populations over the course of time rebelled and raised major insurgencies that caused the decline of Islam’s hold in erstwhile India – and these insurgencies also splintered and produced martial clans like the Sikhs and Marathas who codified their resistance against Muslims. Together with the interplay between the British, this led to the fracturing of the Subcontinent into Muslim-dominated and Islam-based Pakistan (which later splintered from within to create Bangladesh after a genocide initiated by the Pakistanis against their hitherto eastern countrymen) and Hindu-dominated but officially-secular India.
Four wars and several insurgencies later, the dynamic devolved into what we see today.
