Why do people kill if they know they will be caught sooner or later?

r/

i’m fully aware that i shouldn’t expect some kind of logic from killers, and i also know that killing can be a compulsion, so serial killers can’t stop, but i’m referring specifically to that type of killer who only kills once, like out of revenge. don’t they know that the family and the police will track down the victim’s whereabouts and they’ll soon be rotting in prison? do they really think they’re so clever as to think they’ll be the first to commit a perfect crime? it seems stupid to me.

The majority of criminals have poor impulse control and don’t think about the consequences of their actions before taking them. There was even a study years ago where a large number of prisoners were asked how much time passed between thinking about their crime and committing it, and for most of them it was measured in seconds.

About half of murders go unsolved in the US so it isn’t absolutely certain that a killer will be caught. The rest can be explained by simple emotion, ignorance, stupidity, arrogance, etc.

In the moment they don’t care

Some people might think the kill is worth it in the moment. Or it may not even be just in the moment and they still think it’s worth killing someone after getting caught

You ever get really mad at someone or something, and in the moment, you lose control of your temper and yell or hit something?

You shouldn’t expect logic from any killer, whether he’s a casual or a professional. Killing is not logical (by definition). Surviving is logical, killing is irrational.

It is natural and organic to some extent, as an act of self-defense. But never logical.

Whoever kills, whether out of coldness or impulse, is carrying out an emotional act, but triggering different emotions. Both have “feeling” as a guideline.

But the killer has to experience a series of possible sensations, such as adrenaline or even erotic pleasure in some cases. While those who kill “unintentionally” are imbued with a peremptory sensation, momentary, like the anger of the moment.

About them thinking they’re smart, they think they are. But everyone thinks they are. You yourself thought you were smart when you produced this insight, suggesting how absurd it is to kill someone.

People don’t think they’re stupid, because they are stupid.

People just believe they are right, and they bet on it.

Most murders are heat of of the moment, fit of rage blah blah blah. It’s why they get solved because there’s a clear M O. It’s only when there isn’t a clear motive that the case goes cold and gets forgotten about.

this is only recently that killers are caught fairly often and this is been from modern technology (dna and profiling) there are still many murders that are never solved. Look at the rash of serial killers that got away with murders prior to people knowing what a serial killer was and the current amount of cold cases being solved with DNA and it shows how often people used to get away with murder. The truly smart ones aren’t getting caught and are likely plying their trade somewhere with low technology.

    It’s fun 🤷

    I mean… oh I couldn’t possibly have any idea… mystery to me… 😐

Roughly around 87% of all murders are never solved. The chances of getting caught when ur not stupid is minimal. So its not really a case of sill be caught eventually but more might get caught if sloppy

Rage makes everything red and you cant think of anything but ending the other one

Do you realize how many unsolved murders there are? The chances are more likely that you won’t get caught.

IMO, generally the people doing what may just be a one off killing, is a narcissist so they think they are super smart and won’t get caught.

  14. elephant35e Avatar

    Multiple reasons.

    1. They try to avoid getting caught. This often works when you think about how many unsolved murders there are.
    2. They act on impulse. They get angry, kill the person without thinking about the consequences, and then shortly afterwards say “What did I just do…”
    3. They don’t care about getting in trouble during their moment of killing the person. They know they’ll get in trouble, but they just say “Fuck it!” and kill the person.

Having watched a lot of true crime and police interviews I’ve thought about it a lot and tried to imagine stuff from their perspective but I really think it’s just that they’re stupid. In their head they think they’re a master criminal who can get away with murder. Their methods to cover up the murder are often very stupid and low effort. They think by telling a few lies to the police they will magically get away with murder. A lot of them also think the police are stupid and can be tricked easily. Many murderers just strike me as stupid and of low intelligence.

Perhaps there’s a thrill in being caught. The adrenaline rush when the police breaks in during your act could be intoxicating. Some may not mind being caught, suggesting that the murder was completely worth it or that person really deserved death.

Same reason people do lots of things, strong emotional reactions that take precedent over sense, logic and control. Some killers plan and aren’t necessarily reactive but lots of murders happen due to emotional outbursts that lead to doing things that are out of control.

I killed for the government, in the military. Technically I’m a spree killer/ serial killer

    > do they really think they’re so clever as to think they’ll be the first to commit a perfect crime?

I bet a lot of them do think this, actually.

  21. GuiltyLiterature Avatar

Most murders are heat-of-the-moment events, usually with friends or family as victims. At that moment in time, they aren’t thinking about what’s next.

Jeffery Dahmer says that once he killed the first guy, something inside him changed

  23. I-like-garlic-bread1 Avatar

They won’t always be caught and sometimes it’s worth it

  24. AnonShadowOfYor Avatar

The vast majority of people committing murders are either too stupid to realize they’re going to be caught or don’t care that they’re going to be caught. Add on insanely poor impulse control and that’s why.
