Why do people tailgate?

r/

Every time someone is on my ass, it gives me major anxiety. It’s not going to make me go faster if there’s someone in front of me. I’m not tailgating them too because then if something were to happen to that car in front of me, then I’m done.

to goad you into going faster, to be a dick, take your pick

Literally, it stresses me out when people tailgate me. As if that’s going to magically make the traffic disappear

Sometimes when someone does that to me I just slow down, and then take a few “pretent close” views on my dash cam. I do keep my eyes on the road. When they see me looking at something they pull back, as tailgating is dangerous driving, and reporting on line these days is so easy. Plus, I often use my adaptive cruise control, so if the car in front does not speed up, neither will I.

Sometimes it means to get the hell out of the passing lane.

I usually let my foot off the gas .. it’s fun watching them freak the fuck out in the mirrors, plus I have rear facing cameras

  6. thats_how_they_getya Avatar

I think some of them don’t even realize they’re doing it. They just move forward until they can’t go any farther.

I think these are the same people who inch into a parking space until they hit something.

“Never attribute to malice what can likely be attributed to incompetence.” I always imagine it tells me this person tailgating me has never been in a car accident.

If someone behind you wants to drive faster than you are going, get over and let them pass.

Disclaimer: I am an idiot at times.

When you’re being tailgated, do what I do. Slalom in the lane once in a while and correct with an irky-jerky. Stay in your lane, though. Usually, they’ll assume you’re intoxicated and back off so as not to wreck when you do.

  10. LePetitCompteBidon Avatar

To force a lane switch. On a highway, if you can switch lane to your right and you don’t, people will tailgate you.

And maybe there’s someone in front of you, but there may not be another person ahead.

  11. Major_Enthusiasm1099 Avatar

Yeah I get anxiety too. People are selfish and careless drivers and they think they’re getting somewhere faster if they do that when really they aren’t

  12. CyanConatus Avatar

They are hoping you can phase through the car infront of you so they can move up a few meters to reduce their journey duration by about 1/10 of a second.

That’s when you slam on your brakes to politely indicate that your car is not phase capable unfortunately.

  13. not-a-spy-42 Avatar

    I always slow down.

  14. Fancy_Environment133 Avatar

Once I got rid of my ego, I learned to just move over and let them pass.

  15. patmurny Avatar

Because they are morons and will end up rear ending about ten people in there life and always play the victim , leave space because u never know who the person is in front of you or what they are going to do

  16. Prestigious-Fan3122 Avatar

I dated a guy in college who ALWAYS did that! It scared the bejeebers out of me! He was a pretty gentle guy, and not at all aggressive, so I think he was just a lousy driver! That was several decades ago, and as far as I know, he is still alive and well.

  17. iWish_is_taken Avatar

The more someone tailgates me… the slower I go. I feed off the hate… love smiling and laughing in the rearview while their eyes widen and their faces squinch with hate… suck it loser! hahahaha!!

  18. DryFoundation2323 Avatar

For most people they consider themselves to be the center of the universe. If everything’s okay with them then everything’s okay with the universe. In order for them to be okay they want to get wherever they’re going as fast as possible. They incorrectly believe that if they tailgate you they will get there faster somehow.

I normally deal with this by just gradually slowing down until they decide to pass me.

It’s for people that are the combo of impatient, discourteous, lazy, and oblivious to the danger.

  20. Distant_Evening Avatar

As long as you don’t react to it, you’re free to be annoyed by it. I’m annoyed that people refuse to move to the right lane when I’m on their ass.

    > It’s not going to make me go faster if there’s someone in front of me. I’m not tailgating them too because then if something were to happen to that car in front of me, then I’m done.

Exactly. The closer someone is behind me the more I need to slow down to so I won’t have to decelarate quickly if someone in front brakes suddenly.

Tailgaiting me increases how much I have to be cautious to try to make up for the tailgater’s lack of caution. Do they really not know that there is no possible way that following one or two carlengths behind at freeway speeds means it is literally impossible for them to react in time if I have to emergecy brake for something in front of me?

I feel like driving simulators that include reaction tests during tailgating should be required driver training and that tailgating should be cited more often than it is.

And, no, I’m not talking about being in the passing lane with a tailgater behind me.

I can’t speak for all tailgaters but if you ever see me tailgate someone it’s because I’m in the left lane and the person in front of me is going way too slow to be in the left lane.

Not many ppl are aware of this but the left lane is the passing lane.. It is against the law to “camp out” in the left lane and not let others pass you.. Thats right, it is illegal to disrupt the flow of traffic… You can technically get a ticket.

Technically people are supposed to drive in the right and middle lanes. If any one wants/needs to go around someone they should do so in the left lane because it is safer going around in the left lane than in the right lane. There are a lot of blind spots going around in the right lane.

If you are driving in the left lane and you see someone come up behind you really fast, technically YOU should put your right blinker on and switch lanes when safe to do so, so the person behind you can continue at their speed.

Many accidents happen because people are driving too slow in the left lane and they do not let others pass them. That causes people to become impatient, tailgate and weave in and out of lanes, which can cause an accident.

People on the road need to leave their egos at home. It is not up to you to be the speed police and stop someone from passing you just because you think they are driving too fast or driving “like an asshole”… You don’t know why people are driving fast. Yes, some are assholes but others are genuinely just in a rush to get somewhere or they are dealing with an emergency.

It is extremely difficult to get somewhere in an emergency when so many people camp out in the left lane. Please, be kind and leave the left lane open or change to the middle lane so people can pass… That would probably stop most tailgating.

They are simply pissed off about something. (Most of the time it isn’t you, and you, Anonymous Driver, owe nothing to them.)

Or they feel that they must get somewhere urgently. (Again, it’s not your responsibility to make unsafe maneuvers that put yourself and other drivers in danger just to accommodate them.)

Or they just feel like being jackasses.

  24. Bright-Invite-9141 Avatar

    Coz they can’t drive

  25. w3woody Avatar

Sometimes, especially in the middle of the night here in Raleigh, North Carolina where I live, when you’re literally by yourself on an empty 3 lane highway except for that dick that is tailgating you in the slow lane–chances are, they’re drunk and trying to use you as a sort of guide to their driving.

And yes, I’ve had this happen, and yes, I slow down, causing them to slow down.

  26. Beefgrits Avatar

definitely shouldnt be driving with anxiety about driving

  27. AppleTherapy Avatar

I just imagine they gotta take a dump really bad. Then I don’t get mad.

  28. Hopeful_Ad_7719 Avatar

It’s a kinky sex thing. Every time you tail gate someone, you’re signaling you want to fuck the driver in front of you in the ass. The world is full of weirdos.

Better you find out now, on Reddit, than tomorrow when you stop at Sheetz.

  29. uvaspina1 Avatar

They’re trying to make you uncomfortable so you get out of the way/let them pass

  30. Crun_Chy Avatar

I rarely tailgate, but when I do it’s because you’re in the left lane going the same speed as the person in the right lane and you won’t let me by, get out of the way so I can go on happily breaking the speedlimit

  31. Myfury2024 Avatar

people shoudlnt tailgate if you’re in the most right or middle lane. I give way to fast drivers and stay out of the outermost lane, unless there are slow drivers on the right lane, but I return immediately after passing the slow cars.
