This has happened more than once and it’s honestly confusing. I (male) make a friend at the gym (another guy) who seems chill, respectful, even friendly. We train together, share advice, maybe grab a Monster or chat between sets. All good vibes.
Then suddenly, the moment a girlfriend enters the picture, it’s like a switch flips.
One guy in particular stands out: he helped me with my technique, trained with me regularly, even offered to buy me energy drinks. Super polite, soft-spoken, genuinely seemed like a kind person.
But the day he brought his girlfriend to the gym, he turned into someone else. He ignored her form completely (even though she was clearly new), pushed her way too hard (like to the point of risking injury) and kept making little digs at her intelligence. It was uncomfortable to watch.
I even asked him if he was upset about something, thinking maybe he had a bad day. But he said no and kept being friendly with me.
Why do some guys act like this when their girlfriend is around? Is it insecurity? A weird need to assert dominance? I don’t get it.

>Is it insecurity?
Probably.
They’re likely looking to show that they do if really hard, so that girl has to understand just how tough it is. Otherwise, how will they respect him?
Honest answer, male or female some people are just dicks to partners and don’t treat them with respect.
We all behave differently in front of different people. For some people, we behave radically different. Do you behave the same around your best friend as you do you grandma? Your boss at work?
There are an infinite number of reasons that might explain you gym bro’s behavior. Maybe he’s just a shitty boyfriend. Maybe, the gym is where he goes for his personal time and his girlfriend was insisting she go with him to the gym to spend more time together so he was intentionally sabotaging the visit. Maybe he’s wanting to break up but doesn’t know how to do it properly so he’s just being an ass. Maybe he gets frustrated helping newbies learn new skills. Maybe thats just who he really is and he’s just nice to you specifically for any of a million other reasons.
