Why..do some people have to smack when they eat?

r/

Like- their lips. I know someone who always does it and I always tell them to stop and they say they cant..? I mean, how hard is it? Just don’t do it? I need answers.

I feel like it’s the food version of dragging your feet.

  2. Specialist-Neck-7810 Avatar

It’s my deal breaking pet peeve. The reason why, I’ve found, is because parents never corrected them as kids when they did it.

  3. MakuKitsune Avatar

I had a roommate who would do this. Never kept his mouth closed, either. You would have to see his food rolling around his mouth if you sat opposite him.

    Distgusting behaviour.

A few weeks and I switch rooms. Even the guy who replaced me hated it.

Eventually, he learned to chew with his mouth closed. Problem solved.

  4. MadderHatter32 Avatar

In Japan it shows appreciation and how much you are enjoying your food. As a citizen of the US I was raised to eat with my lips together because it was rude to eat otherwise. While I was in Japan I offended my host’s wife at dinner because I was eating quietly. She thought I didn’t enjoy the food. Obviously I told her I was enjoying it but explained to her that it’s different here. Earned some points back by pronouncing ohashi correctly and using them well lol

  5. CoffeeB4Talkie Avatar

It’s so fucking annoying. They don’t have to, they just have no manners. I know of people that even smack when they’re drinking juice. Even people that smack for no reason. Example? They yawn really loud then finish it off with “smack, smack, smack”.

It really makes me feel rage. Like shut your fucking mouth!

  6. TeasingLadyy Avatar

Have a coworker who does this in our break room. We’ve started timing our lunches differently just to avoid the concert of lip smacking and open-mouth chewing. Like seriously, we’re not cows grazing in a field.

  7. banknoteaddict Avatar

If animals do it, it’s perfectly fine and cute but if I hear a person do it I want to duct tape their mouth shut.

  8. Deeri- Avatar

That and slurping. I know someone who even slurps solid food. Not soup, not wet fruit, actually solid food that doesn’t need to be slurped. Can’t stand it.

  9. grownquiteweary Avatar

I work with Koreans and there’s this one guy who does this every lunch, he seemingly times his lunch to have at the same time as me and no matter what he’s eating he eats mouth open smacking that shit up. It drives me insane. I eat lunch outside now to get away from him. I asked the other Koreans if it’s maybe cultural and they said no he just has bad manners.

  10. Several-Sea3838 Avatar

It is human nature, I guess. Every single child does it and I just assume some people were never told to stop doing it. I always ask people who do it if they “have to eat like a child?”. Rude, I guess, but I really don’t want to watch or listen to someone like that

  11. BucketoBirds Avatar

I’m sorry, how do you NOT do it? Genuinely asking

  12. Temporary-Pin-320 Avatar

Everyone can fix any tendencies they do.

It’s about wanting to correct themselves.

They have to be irritated by it themselves though.

I hated my dad when he was always slapping me around for eating with my mouth open. Now as adult I love him for it. Hearing that sound makes me physically sick. I lived with a guy for a few months (share house in London) and I literally had to leave the room every time he was eating something. I’m not exaggerating when I say a pig had better table manners than him. I never heard anyone or anything make such disgusting and loud noises when eating. Just thinking about it makes me feel sick. Jesus….

My best guess would be that’s a “family trait”. They must be all eating like that and it’s normal for them. In most normal civilised communities it’s considered rude and disgusting but hey – we all came from somewhere. I’m trying not to judge people but this is one thing I honestly can’t stand.

  14. DeadbeatGremlin Avatar

Yeah, the sound of people smacking their lips when they eat or kiss/make out with someone/something grosses me out

  15. Pyromighty Avatar

I can’t stand the sucking. Drinking a juice? Must suck the teeth. Eating eggs? Sucking while smacking.

Unfortunately, I work with disabled individuals and I know, logically, they really can’t help it. Some have low muscle tone, others have facial deformities that make it difficult to chew with their mouth closed.

And then you have my dad at thanksgiving chewing with his mouth open, smacking and sucking, being as obnoxious as can be…then yelling at us because we crunched a chip too loud

  16. ohdearitsrichardiii Avatar

My BIL groans with pleasure when he eats. I hate eating at my sister’s house 🤮

  17. Better-Ranger-1225 Avatar

I notice a lot of “food influencers” do this or other similarly loud eating habits in their videos. It’s like they’re making their eating videos a whole display and some sort of visual and auditory experience rather than just… trying the food and saying whether it’s good or not. It’s why I can’t watch that genre of content, I find it absolutely disgusting.

  18. UnicornFarts84 Avatar

I wonder if they either don’t realize they are doing it or do it because they know it pisses people off.

  19. Fivebucksbehind Avatar

For me I think I get all gross because when I’m proper the food literally doesn’t taste as good as if I’m not moving it to my taste buds correctly

  20. DirectorFriendly1936 Avatar

I have mesophonoa or whatever it’s called and the sound of someone eating fills me with the rage of 1000 suns.

  21. JansenVanCouver Avatar

I empathize. I have misophonia, so the sound really aggravates me. For that matter, I was raised to think that smacking one’s lips was very rude.

But, like a lot of manners, that’s pretty arbitrary. There are cultures where smacking one’s lips is normal or even considered to be the proper way to express enjoyment of the food!

For that matter, it is NOT the job of everyone else in the entire world to cater to you and me and avoid making the various sounds that annoy us. It’s OUR responsibility to be mature and recognize when our anger or feelings of loathing do not have a rational basis.

  22. Satinpw Avatar

If you haven’t yet, you should look into misophonia.

I have a partner with misophonia, and I’ve found myself getting annoyed with lip smacking too. It’s probably just because I’m more aware of it thanks to them, but for real–I corrected my habits when they told me it bothered them very early on. It isn’t difficult.

  23. BestSuit3780 Avatar

My bf moans and pretty much chews cud. I have to be in a different room while he eats because he doesn’t hear how disgusting he sounds lol

  24. Echterspieler Avatar

I’m hard of hearing and I’m not aware other people can hear my eating noises. I’m not able to hear others

  25. NomadicRobot Avatar

My boyfriend does sometimes but his nose has been broken a couple of times, so it’s more about being able to breathe vs being inattentive.

  26. Ruppell-San Avatar

    Because their development stopped somewhere.
It’s an infantile behavior not much better than drooling.

  27. HoidsApprentice1121 Avatar

I have a friend who does this. Smacks his lips, chews with his mouth open, talks with his mouth full, slurps, the whole nine yards. I got myself a pair of earplugs to wear when we eat.

  28. Busy-Crab-8861 Avatar

Can’t breathe out nose. You would do the same. Clear nose elitist.

  29. OvenActive Avatar

It’s definitely possible, just something that their parents never addressed. My parents did address it and sometimes I still mess slip up and my gf calls me on it.

The only explanation for why it would actually not be possible is if they are unable to breath through their nose. In that case, they would have to smack so they can breath while eating.

  30. Ok-Acanthisitta-8145 Avatar

Nothing makes me feel irrationally angry quite so quickly. My brother did it all of the time growing up but because he was a “picky eater” any correction was off-limits according to mom. If I learn someone does this I never eat with them again.

  31. Itchy_Grapefruit1335 Avatar

It’s horrible it’s like eating next to cattle chewing

  32. Silver-Quantity-8121 Avatar

As someone who has had difficulty breathing through my nose my whole life (hopefully finally getting corrected soon with surgery) this is one of my biggest fears that my lips smack while eating because I’m simply trying to breathe because I can’t just hold my breath for the time it takes to chew. I used to be so self conscious about it that I wouldn’t eat within 50ft of people for fear of being bullied because of it. Or worse I just wouldn’t eat all day at work, had to change that because I passed out during an extra long work day (physical labor for a moving company). Have received every insult you can think of related to “mouth breather” and have had to tell people if they don’t like it then stop fucking seaking me out and sitting with me at lunch when I purposely don’t eat in the common area. Yes I know I’m smacking my lips, no there’s not really anything I can do about unless I want to take such small bites that it takes an hour to eat a damn sandwich.

  33. Ok_Concentrate4461 Avatar

They can. They just need to become aware and break decades of unconscious habit. So they say they can’t.

I have a coworker who’s vegan and usually eats protein bars or something at lunch. Sometimes though she eats carrots. With her mouth open. Like a goddamn rabbit. I usually have to leave. And we eat in my room.

  34. DidYouFeedTheDogYet Avatar

I feel like it’s the same people who listen to youtube videos on speaker when using public transportation or spit wads oh phlegm on a sidewalk when someone is walking just behind them. They have zero awareness or just give zero fucks how their behavior affects others. Smacking your food is rude af when other people are trying to enjoy their food! If you ever expect to be asked on a 2nd date or out to dinner with friends who aren’t hillbillies, quit chewing your food like it’s cud you dumb cow!

  35. nanonann Avatar

I knew someone who does it because he was mimicking his parents when he was a kid and growing up no one around him told him it’s not ok, so it became a habit. And when it becomes a habit it’s hard to fix, like he had to be very conscious in order to stop and it annoys him since he cannot enjoy his food properly.

  36. MANIC_MOONLIGHT Avatar

My mother would smack the shit out of me if I ate like that as a child. Now, it’s one of those things I can not and will not tolerate. I will remove myself, if necessary.

  37. BunnyKnotMelt Avatar

What if a baby does it?

  38. IncubusIncarnat Avatar

I will flip out before I even realized I was pissed off by it 😅

Like did you learn how to eat from animals or did you not get enough attention as a child?? It cant be an injury because you open so wide I can count how many cavities you have 😬

ETA: Even on a Cultural Level, I may be less inclined to say something but you should know Im not fuckin with any of it.

  39. TommyVercetti010 Avatar

Some guy told me it’s because “he can’t breath otherwise”.
    He’s just lazy and annoying

  40. Ok-Foot7577 Avatar

I have had to change the way I eat and chew due to severe pain in my jaw from TMJ. I tend to take forever to eat and usually eat alone because it’s loud and my jaw pops so loud you can hear it in a quiet restaurant

  41. Lucky-Entrepreneur48 Avatar

I move seats when someone starts eating across from me on public transport. Same with chewing gum with their mouth open. I think it really signifies stupidity.

  42. Dagost17 Avatar

My step kid chews like a pig. It’s so loud and disgusting, I don’t even know how it’s humanly possible to make such noises! He also makes a mess like a baby! He’s 19! Hand smears of food, grease, etc alllll over my island, table, microwave! It’s sick! Food all on the floor. You eat over the table….how is it all over the floor???? I guess his parents never cared.

  43. HairyDadBear Avatar

Honestly if my grandma didn’t mention it I would be a smacker

  44. Agitated-Cup-2657 Avatar

I used to do this. I was aware I was doing it, but I couldn’t stop because my autism gave me poor control over my movements. My motor skills finally started to catch up to baseline when I was 15, and now I don’t smack when I chew anymore. Progress!

  45. Scarlet_Crusade_ Avatar

You haven’t seen anything if you haven’t been to Korea…they speak a lot with their actions there. I’m my observation lip smacking to a comical level is – a near equivalent of saying “yum”. These guys would be eating a roll of bread and it’d be the loudest lip smacking I’d ever heard.

  46. DukeRains Avatar

    The absolute worst.

  47. Soldmysoul_666 Avatar

What’s crazy is my parents were militant about this growing up. Now they both do this like crazy! It’s so annoying

  48. 16quida Avatar

I don’t always do it. Usually just to piss off my wife

  49. Relative_Character73 Avatar

Jeez, yes! To be honest, it really pisses me off. But I can’t blame other people. Most likely, it’s some kind of habit. Probably their parents or people around them just didn’t tell them that it was a little impolite, so now it’s perceived as normal.

Probably this habit can be changed, but I doubt anyone will bother about it, lol.

  50. PerryDawg17 Avatar

UGH, my brother has always smacked his goddamn food and it’s because he has sinus issues and can’t breathe through this nose. The mouth breathing and smacking is unbearable and whenever I would see him pour a bowl of cereal I’d leave the room.

I know someone who does this all the time. And sucks things off her fingers almost as loud as possible. In her case I’m pretty sure she has an oral fixation. Very surprised she doesn’t smoke or regularly chew gum. I actively try no to eat around her.

  58. JonnyJjr13 Avatar

Food tasted better with a flow of oxygen coursing through your mouth. It’s why so many people start smacking their lips when they first learn to eat. It’s a habit that parents should break because it’s disgusting to everyone else. It might be an unbreakable habit as years go on and nothing was done about it.

  59. touchmeimjesus202 Avatar

  60. zigaliciousone Avatar

If you do this in my presence, I am probably quietly seething while I look for an exit.

Seen two different variants of this that are equally as bad. The person who goes “ahhhh” every time they take a drink of a carbonated beverage and the person who says “mmmmm” every single bite.

  61. LyallaTime Avatar

My mother does this. I have NO TEETH and a half paralyzed tongue and I do not make this much noise eating. Ever.

I am forty and finally told her if she didn’t stop smacking her lips I would come across the table and smack them for her and it fucking worked—for one meal.

It’s okay, she lives in another country so we’re cool.

Sometimes it’s cultural. So it’s not frowned on in certain parts of the world. In fact, they think the louder you eat, the more you’re enjoying it. So, it’s disrespectful to not smack loudly there. Still… I can’t stand it. You’re not alone.

This and the sound of people aggressively gulping make me wanna kms I feel you 💀

  77. Dangerous_Ad_7042 Avatar

Studies have shown food actually tastes better if you smack and chew with your mouth open. It has to do with volatile compounds in the food more easily reaching the nasal passages at the back of our mouths.

In some places eating loudly is considered polite, as a way to show you’re enjoying the food. Given that you’re asking this question, I assume you don’t live in one of those places. In which case, they might not know they’re doing it or have breathing problems. But some people just don’t have manners or social awareness.
