Why do students ask for help but never come to office hours?

r/

I constantly remind them that I’m available. I’ve even offered flexible times. Still, 90% of my students wait until right before an exam to panic—and then blame the course structure when they fall short. Is there a better way to get them to actually use the support that’s already there?

They’re scared of looking stupid. Office hours feel like admitting defeat to them.

Require 1-2% of the course grade for just showing up to office hours. Maybe make it group-based? Low stakes = more attendance

You never realise it’s too late, until it’s too late

Your students have lives outside of school and I hazard to guess most of them don’t have time to show up for anything they’re not required to. Some of them are just lazy sure but there’s nothing you can do about them.
