Why do we settle for life as it is?

r/

Okay, so let me explain. Many people work everyday for money and yet are deeply unhappy, or unfulfilled. Why? Why do we do it to ourselves? What can we do to break free form this endless cycle of meaninglessness? How can we find true fulfilment and break the chains of a monetary system?

Work is simply a way of exchanging your time and energy for a paycheck. Not for attaboys, not fulfillment, not fun or friends.

Work is “meaningful” because it pays for the things you personally consider meaningful: everything from that rare widget you found on Ebay to a roof over your head and food on your table.

    >the chains of a monetary system

Try a barter system and see how easy it is to exchange your cow for a loaf of bread.

What’s your alternative? Without working for a living, life would often be worse.

If people knew that answer, they wouldn’t be in the jobs. Win the lottery ? Invest well and get lucky? Anything which gives you the freedom to do as you wish with your life.

    >How can we find true fulfilment and break the chains of a monetary system?

The key is to be fulfilled by things other than money. Family, friends, hobbies etc.

Again, no one on here is going to tell you how to ‘break the chains of a monetary system’ or else we: a) wouldn’t be stuck in it, or B) would want people in it because it would benefit us.

I like comforts that our ancestors did not have. Such as running clean water, clothes not made from dry grass down by the river, a stable shelter with warmth etc… And stuff

Even in the middle ages in Europe 90 to 95% of the population farmed. And you still had to pay up with your crop to live and work there (basically a serf)

I just wish pay scales would be set. Such as no one in a company can make 2000% more than the lowest wage paid. So if you hired a minimum wage workers at only 28 hours (let’s say $10 a hour $280 a week $14560 a year. The max that ceo could make including benefits, bonuses, stock options would be $291,200.00

Guarantee there would be more raises for lower workers

You want fulfillment? Figure out what makes you happy, what you love, what you care about. Work is unavoidable cos we all need money. Money is the best way to pay for things we need and or want, like a roof over our heads, food on our tables, food for our pets which we love, toys for ourselves that gives us enjoyment, etc. Idk where you are based, but in eu, we care more about work life balance because you need to be able to enjoy life and do what makes you happy. If not, life becomes meaningless because your money then is pretty limited to being spent on survival, which brings not much joy and fulfillment. Fulfillment can come in many forms, like seeing the world, volunteering at a pet shelter or at an old folks home, learning new skills like rollerblading or drawing, going to watch a race, looking good in a new outfit, simply spending time with your family. But you first need to understand what makes YOU happy, and then go after that. Don’t assume what makes people around you happy should make you happy, we’re all a little different.

It’s easy to break the chains of the monetary system. You can go and live in the woods and eat whatever you can catch and kill. Live in a cave and drink water after out of puddles.

But it’s quite difficult to post pseudo-political horseshit on Reddit when you have no money for a phone, an internet connection, and electricity to make it all work.

We just don’t really have a choice. If we try to break the norm it usually involves a lot of willpower and can involve some emotional turmoil. Our brains are programmed to avoid suffering and anything that hurts.

A friend of mine works as a farm hand, he enjoys taking care of the animals and working the land.
He needs this to have a place to live, food to eat, and clothes.
His other passion is music, so he plays in a band on certain nights or weekends.
    He is happy with life.
