Why does incest give people disabilities?

Based on my limited knowledge I believe certain disabilities occur when both parents are carriers of the gene that causes it, which is more likely if the parents are related

There are genetic conditions that you only get if both parents have the right gene. So if your parents are related, they’ve got those same genetic conditions genes.

Normally when people have kids there’s a normal mix of genes, but inbreeding greatly increases the chance of the kid getting 2 copies of the same defective gene.

Traits are coded by pairs of genes from our parents. We have a great many gene pairs coding for a great many traits.

Recessive traits are only expressed when the child receives the recessive gene from both parents. If the gene from either parent is dominant instead, the recessive trait will be suppressed in the child but can be passed on in the same way to their children.

Incest significantly magnifies recessive traits because both parents are likely to carry the same set of recessive genes, making it more likely that the child will receive two copies of it and thus have it expressed instead of being suppressed by a dominant gene from the other parent. So children of incest are more likely to have rare genetic conditions.

Two people being carriers or predisposition to a disease continuously reproduce down the same blood line. Said issue will become more prominent over time.

There’s an episode of scishow on YouTube where Hank green talks about the consequences of reproducing with your own genes.

It’s… disturbing, and now I know why nature insists on the cardinal rule of “it takes two to tango”
