Why doesn’t Mexico export its good mangoes to the US?

r/

I live in Texas, and right about now Mexican mangoes start showing up in grocery stores. But the product seems so average, and so limited in variety. Compare to Apples, Oranges or Pears they have so many types and varieties available. Mexico must grow really amazing mangoes. Why don’t they export the good ones?

Long answer… This is not just a Mexico thing. All of the fruit exports into the USA must comply with FDA standards and most importantly with retailer requirements that unfortunately could affect flavor.. If the retailer requests that their mangoes must have a 2 week shelf life, we must export unripe mangoes which will ripen on their way to the stores effectively robbing deliciousness from the fruit.

Short answer. Why would I give you the delicious fruit if I can have it for myself?

    Good fruit doesn’t ship well.

most mango varieties don’t have long shelf life and can’t be hot water washed so you only get the though ones like Atalufo.

    I don’t know. But I’m glad we don’t. You don’t deserve them.

Cause you dont pay for them.

We export what you pay for.

“When México sends it’s mangos, they’re not sending their best” lol

But tbf is mostly a US regulatory thing. US customs may stipulate some things that mangos shipments can’t clear that easily.
For example, mangos are kinda hard to ship because they are really squishy, so shipments tend to face a considerable loss margin with them, making growth not that viable. Lastly, México inside market to mangos is really big, so there is an incentive to not export everything, plus mexican mangos also go to Japan or Spain also reducing the number of exports to the US

Are you getting Ataulfo or gross-ass Tommy Atkins/unlabeled? You might wait until it’s closer to summer as well.

    Shipping fruit is hard.

The usa doesnt send its best tasting apples to other countries either, they dont ship well.

Supply Chain and US regulations dont allow it, they prioritize hardiness and shelf life since those are the things that maximize both safetyness and profit, that’s why most exports are usually your standard and always reliably good enough ataulfo mango

The right answer is, once mangoes are off the tree, they rot quickly. So you must pick them green and export them to mature off the tree, which yields a sub par fruit. Like most off season fruit from overseas.
