Why don’t many latinos receive communion when they go to church?

r/

Last Sunday, i had to go to the earlier Spanish mass due to an appointment and when it was time to receive communion, only half the people went up to receive. In the English mass, pretty much everyone goes up to receive. Also I noticed that latinos actually sing to the songs while in english mass, nobody sings lol

We don’t receive communion if we did not go through confession.

Are you talking about church in your country? We don’t know your customs. Where I live, most people don’t go to church, most aren’t even religious. I can’t really say why people in your country do what they do, you probably have a better idea, being closer to it.

They probably didn’t have time to confess before hand.

Latinos tend to take the fact that you’re not supposed to receive communion if you’re not in a state of grace more seriously

Many haven’t gone through the sacramental training, so they can’t.

Plenty of latinos do. But it’s seen as unsanitary now for some people. Also you need to confess before technically, so that may be a factor.

    They’re unrepentant sinners.

This is common in Latin America, especially among the men who like to go out and drink Saturday nights, myself included

In my country most of people don’t receive communion when attending to a mass cause they are not religious and they have not gone through all the sacramental training to be able to receive communion. In fact most of people only attend to masses when there’s a wedding, funeral or any other special situation, so we just don’t receive communion cause it’d be disrespectful.

Some people actually take it as seriously as they should and don’t receive if they haven’t prepared themselves.

You have to confess beforehand to receive, or believe that you haven’t sinned since the last time you confessed.

I have an IUD (which is a sin for Catholics) and don’t wanna take it out :/

If you feel you’re not in a state of grace, you shouldn’t receive communion.

If we have sin and not confess you are not pure to receive communion. I guess Latinos are more honest about their ability to receive communion .

I’m eclectic, but my whole family is Catholic and for many years I attended this religion. What I know is that to receive communion, the faithful must not have mortal sins, according to the catechism of the Catholic Church. Therefore, many should not take communion because they are aware that they need to confess to the priest before taking communion, when there are mortal sins.

The concept of mortal sin is also another thing taught by the catechism itself.

To take communion you have to be in state of grace, have confess your sins, and be prepared. Like my religious teacher said when I was a kid… It’s like you showing up smelly, bad mouth, not bathed, ugly and dirty clothes to a fancy wedding, you dress accordingly to the party and the honored person.

The person may feel they have not confessed recently enough to receive communion.

You only receive communion when you feel you are free of sin enough to receive it, if you dont feel like that you need to go to confession to be able to receive it again

Taking communion while not in a state of grace is a mortal sin

It’s not about latinos or Latin America. It’s the Catholic church. You receive communion if you already made a confession to a priest. I came from a Italian heritage, so my catholic life is very strong. Once I tried to take communion without the annual confession and my father went nuts with me.

I think that the idea of not receiving communion if you haven’t recently gone to confession is taken way more seriously amongst Latin American Catholics than Americans.

I was taught that singing is praying twice (Jesuit teaching).

So yes, here almost everyone sings.

are you even allowed to go to school then?

You are supposed to go to Confession every three months. Many, many people only go if they have a big event coming and want to take communion like a friend’s wedding. That’s it.

Oh also, if you cohabitate with your partner without marriage. That’s a big one. You just can’t go every couple weeks and say you are sorry for having sex with someone without marriage and keep on doing it, you should repent to be forgiven.

    No confession no communion

  26. Rikeka Avatar

It’s a sin to receive communion if you feel you need to do confession first. If in your church everyone is receiving communion, then they all feel good about themselves or they not taking it seriously.

I’m not Catholic, I’m Protestant, and would like to know why not confess to God directly? Why one must confess to a priest instead before partaking in communion?
A friend said it is because your confession gets a “boost” that way. Can anyone enlighten me please?

They know the teachings of the Church

Many people are saying it’s due to mortal sins, but as someone raised as a Catholic I really doubt that would make half the people in a mass not take communion

    There are many other reasons:

    • They didn’t have first communion, which is common for children and teenagers
    • They already had communion earlier in another mass
    • They’re not practing Catholics, they just went there because it’s Christmas or to make company to a relative or friend
    • For priests that serve the communion wafer in the person’s mouth, some people may have health concerns if they’re not used to it
    • Some elderly might trouble standing in line to receive the communion wafer
    • They don’t feel like it, no particular reason
