Why has society normalized alcohol when it is one of the most dangerous things you can do to your body?

r/

I recently had a conversation with a friend and I mentioned that I vape, in which he gave me the usual “that’s not good for you.” i told him getting blackout drunk every weekend also isn’t good, and he got mad at me.

I fully understand vaping and smoking aren’t good for you either, but society seems to be much more relaxed with people who drink than people who vape or smoke. Why?

Drinking has been normalized and integrated into traditions for a long time now. It’s used in religious ceremonies, it was and still is a big part of celebrations, and for a lot of people, it marks the transition from child to adult. Why do people see it as less worrisome? Maybe because it’s been a part of their lives and their culture for a long time, and they don’t want to admit that something so sacred is also very harmful.

    I hate alcohol.

It was around long before they knew it was dangerous. And before much at all was known about health & the human body.

It is far from even being close to one of the most dangerous things you can do to your body

Alcohol is literally poison. Small amounts won’t hurt you, but blackout drunk every weekend? Not good long term.

I think a lot of people might have a cocktail or wine on the weekend as a celebration of sorts. Vaping and cigarettes might be okay if you had a couple a month to celebrate. No one uses them that way, though.

Governments can still have productive citizens and tax them for this habit.

There was a huge push by the government to run anti-smoking ads for more than half a century. The same cannot be said (at least to any similar extent) for anti-alcohol ads. (Edit: In living memory)

Being in a car, doing fireworks, and eating unhealthy are other examples of dangerous things that society has normalized.

It’s normalised because it’s normal. Alcohol has been with us since before recorded history, it’s millennia old.

Vapes are new, and not integrated into society over history.

Society doesn’t make rational decisions about what is normal and what isn’t. Things become normal by being normal.

Probably because many religions include things about alcohol. That’s my take on it.

    Stats show is being denormalized

I’m not sure, drinking doesn’t seem very popular anymore, at least where I’m from. It seems everyone smokes weed instead. Unfortunately, I had to quit all 3 and I miss the nicotine the most.

Drinking alcohol has existed longer than humans even achieved civilization. It’s always been apart of our culture and probably always will be.

shrug. look at what happened when we tried to ban it.

    Alcohol in moderation is…  fine.

A portion of society has normalized alcohol abuse, but the fact that we have the term “alcohol abuse” shows that there is a moderate portion of society.

Vaping is new, so people are skeptical.  And people often don’t realize that vapes are not cigarettes and that nicotine in isolation does no damage comparable to tobacco.

Tobacck is indeed notably harmful in anything but occasional use.

Maybe if you concentrate on just the things you do to your own body, what society does would matter less to you.

People survived on alcohol back in the day, was safer than much drinking water… it got grandfathered in
