The other options are either so fucking awful (Adam’s) or not too known to the average New Yorker (everyone else running).
People place more weight on how he guided the city through the pandemic via the daily conferences and his performance as Mayor over his scandals.
Like him being a scumbag isn’t new information(even pre-COVID) but he’s an efficient scumbag
To really oversimplify, the political system in New York is so corrupt that he actually looks pretty reasonable compared to the other crooks that will be in the primary.
Because the current mayor is insanely unpopular, and the average voter has no idea who any of the other candidates are because there are too many of them.
So the nursing home scandal to me was not really a scandal. Residents who were admitted to a hospital were counted as hospital deaths and not nursing home deaths. That is how things are counted. Don’t like it? Change the system. He handled the pandemic well, his daily press breifings were professional and informative.
However, he was acused of creating a hostile work environment for women, which was probably acurate.
Trump was elected not once, but twice. Amnesia of the population happens. Enough time has passed people are over it.
The nipple ring
Because Covid isn’t even real unless the republicans can use it for political gain.
Democrats is the answer.
Name recognition and voters too lazy to research other candidates. It’s unbelievable.
The nursing home thing was only a “scandal” because Republicans said so.
The real issue with him should be his sexual harassment of women in the workplace but this is America 2025. Our president is a rapist.
I listened to Gov. Cuomo during the epidemic. His daily briefings were vastly superior to the Trump farces.
Cause he knows he has NY wrapped around his finger.
Because New York votes for 2 things – 1. Recognizable name, 2. Is a Democrat. Doesn’t matter how awful the candidate is
Because he really wasn’t that awful of a governor.
It’s the city that never sleeps, which–which–which– um, wait a minute, what was the question?
Because new Yorkers are dumb when it comes to voting
Trump won a second term despite delivering the worst per capita COVID numbers in the world and his supporters violently attacking the seat of our government in his name.
People have the memories of goldfish and right and wrong don’t matter anymore. At this point, the average American would vote for Ted Bundy if they thought it would reduce the cost of their Netflix subscription.
Liberalism is a deeply corrupted institution in America.
what was the nursing home scandal? that folks that didn’t need acute care were sent to places where normal care existed? the nursing homes said they could be trusted to keep disease out but they didn’t. they failed.. and hospitals needed to be able to stay open for more acute folks. we were generally lucky on the fact that most folks didn’t need more acute care but in the city, a lot of folks did… so moving folks out was important.
you have to remember, the president was all about old folks dying
Name recognition.
Name recognition.
The fact that King Pin (from Marvel) getting elected as New York Mayor is realistic is kinda crazy
And don’t forget the legal costs now are on NYS taxpayers at a tune of around $18 million to defend Cuomo against lawsuits filed by former aides and state employees accusing him of sexual harassment.
He has some balls
Wasn’t that bad. Left needs to stop eating their own so easily. Also with all the uncertainty on the national level with Trump, stepping out of the comfort zone of someone you don’t know is scary
Because “polls” will show whatever will get engagement and money. They’re full of BS, just like Cuomo.
He legit got #metoo’d and now we are ALL over that bullshit.
Good luck to him
Probably mostly just name recognition.
That’s like the OP asking why did a convicted felon and rapist get into the White House.
Just so people remember, Trump told people to inject themselves with bleach.
Nobody cares about the nursing home “scandal”. Literally nobody.
The only reason Eric Adams isn’t going to jail is because he licked Trump’s butthole. His administration is also shockingly corrupt, even for New York City.
Cuomo is perceived as a tough and competent leader. Many would describe him as a sociopathic tyrant, but that would describe most politicians. He will also stand up to Trump, which is what most in New York City want.
IMO, the answer is because for all of his faults, and whether or not it is true, Cuomo is perceived as competent and not corrupt. Eric Adams is a complete dumpster fire, and the public just wants someone who isn’t in the Post everyday for another corruption story.
I’m a New Yorker, he’s in first because of name recognition. Four years ago, Andrew Yang was first and he ended up fourth in June.
The primary is in June and it is ranked choice so many folks will probably put Cuomo first. I will not do that, I voted against Cuomo twice in the primary and voted third party in 2018. Andrew Cuomo was not a good governor, especially on public transit issues which affect me personally. In 2021 I ranked Garcia first and did not rank Eric Adams at all on my ballot.
Don’t rank Cuomo or Adams on the ballot!
Cuomo is damaged goods, but he’s THEIR damaged goods.
NY being NY, they will keep voting in scum like that.
Besides, Hochul is worse.
On top of all this, he’s not really interested in Mayor of NYC, he wants to run in ’28 for the White House and he’s trying to cleanse his reputation
Because Americans have a short memory with politics. Talking to family members about what Trump is doing now I say “of course, he did it his first term. Why would he change?” And I got met with “huh….I just don’t remember that…”
Because Americans have short memories. Remember when somebody tried to overturn the results of an election and have their own Vice President killed for not participating in their fake elector scheme and then they got elected again a few years later?
some of us don’t consider the nursing home thing to be so horrible.
What else was he supposed to do? We had recovering people who needed to leave the hospitals to make room for new patients. Nursing homes were supposed to keep those patients separate from the general population.
Everyone was overwhelmed, and it was a shitshow.
It wasn’t a deliberately evil think, and there was some logic behind it.
Also: We had him as a governor, and Machiavellian though he was, he got shit done.
Same reason Trump got reelected. People have short memories. Doesn’t matter what side of the aisle. I fear our attention spans are only getting shorter too.
For real. I bet someone that was president at that time would have no hope of election these days either.
Zucker gets virtually no blame for this scandal when he recommended it. I would pin 70% on Zucker 20% on Cuomo 10% Trump for doing zilch until a month later when he sent boats and it was too late. Cuomo isn’t blameless in it, but I think he gets unfairly postered for it
